  • A series of bearing capacity tests was conducted with eccentrically loaded model surface and shallow strip footings resting close to a slope to investigate behavior of such footings (ultimate loads, failure surfaces, load-displacement curves, rotation of footing, etc.). Ultimate loads of footing close to slope decreased with increasing eccentricity for both surface and shallow footings. Failure surfaces were not symmetrical, primary failure surfaces occurred on the eccentricity side (the slope side) and secondary failure surfaces occurred on the other side. Lengths of failure surfaces decreased with increasing eccentricity. Footings always rotated towards eccentricity side a few degrees. For eccentrically loaded footing, decrease in ultimate load with increasing eccentricity is roughly in agreement with Customary Analysis.

  • Although a lot of experimental and analytical investigations have been carried out for steel bridge piers made of SS400 and SM490, the formulas available for SS400 and SM490 are not suitable for evaluating ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge piers made of high strength steel (HSS) SM570. The effect of various parameters is investigated in this paper, including plate width-to-thickness ratio, column slenderness ratio and axial compression force ratio, on the ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge box piers made of SM570 steel subjected to cyclic loading. The elasto-plastic behavior of the steel bridge piers under cyclic loads is simulated through plastic large deformation finite element analysis, in which a modified two-surface model (M2SM) including cyclic hardening is employed to trace the material nonlinearity. An extensive parametric study is conducted to study the influences of structural parameters on the ultimate load and deformation capacities. Based on these analytical investigations, new formulas for predicting ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge piers made of SM570 are proposed. This study extends the ultimate load and deformation capacities evaluation of steel bridge piers from SS400, SM490 steels to SM570 steel, and provides some useful suggestions.

  • Experimental investigation and finite element analysis of corroded cold-formed steel (CFS) columns are presented. 11 tensile coupon specimens and 6 stub columns of corroded CFS that had a channel section of C160x60x20 were subjected to monotonic tensile tests and axial compression tests, respectively. The degradation laws of the mechanical properties of the tensile coupon specimens and stub columns were analysed. An appropriate finite element model for the corroded CFS columns was proposed and the influence of local corrosion on the stability performance of the columns was studied by finite element analysis. Finally, the axial capacity of the experimental results was compared with the predictions obtained from the existing design specifications. The results indicated that with an increasing average thickness loss ratio, the ultimate strength, elastic modulus and yield strength decreased for the tensile coupon specimens. Local buckling deformation was not noticeable until the load reached about 90% of the ultimate load for the non-corroded columns, while local buckling deformation was observed when the load was only 40% of the ultimate load for the corroded columns. The maximum reduction of the ultimate load and critical buckling load was 57% and 81.7%, respectively, compared to those values for the non-corroded columns. The ultimate load of the columns with web thickness reduced by 2 mm was 53% lower than that of the non-corroded columns, which indicates that web corrosion most significantly affects the bearing capacity of the columns with localized corrosion. The results predicted using the design specifications of MOHURD were more accurate than those predicted using the design specifications of AISI.

  • This thesis is an experimental research of investigating behavior of single pile, subjected to the vertical compression loads, using the centrifuge facility located in the geotechnical engineering laboratory in Kangwon National University. Centrifugal model experiments of model pile were carried out changing diameter of model pile, relative density of sandy ground and the gravitational level applied in the centrifuge. Thus, their effects on the load-settlement behavior and the ultimate bearing capacity of pile were investigated. Experimental results obtained from centrifuge model tests were compared with the theoretical or semi-empirical equations to analyze values of ultimate bearing capacity of model pile. When we compare the ultimate bearing capacity of experimental results with the ultimate bearing capacity of theorical results, the experimental results appear more higher in the De Beer method and Meyerhof. Expecially, Terzaghi method is very same as the experimental results normally.

  • When plate anchors are embedded in soft clay, they may undergo a deformation under the pressure of sustained load. The critical depth at which the transition from a shallow to a deep anchor takes place depends on the properties of soil. Laboratory model tests were performed for the short-term net ultimate uplift capacity of a circular anchors with respect to various embedment depths and moisture content in saturated kaolinite. The tests have been conducted with the anchor at two different moisture contents. Based on the model test results, empirical relationships between the net load, rate of strain, and time have been developed. In creep tests of kaolinite for load versus ultimate uplift capacity, the displacement of plate anchors rapidly increases during the primary stage but thereafter becomes constant over a period of time.

  • In designing rock-socketed drilled shaft, bearing capacity evaluation is very important because the maximum values of base and side resistance are not generally mobilized at the same value of displacement, FHWA and AASHTO code suggest different ultimate bearing capacity formular according to rock type and shaft settlement. In domestic code suggest base resistance and side resistance can be added on condition that after confirming the result of field load test with axial load transfer test. This paper shows that static load test and hi-directional load test result analysis of deep rock-socketed drilled shaft in three different sites. Load-settlement curve, t-z, and q-w curve in rock-socketed part were calculated and compared. t-z curve in weathered and soft rock showed no deflection softening behavior in pretty large strain (about 2-3% of diameter). Ultimate resistance could be the summation of side resistance and base resistance in rock-socketed drilled shaft in domestic sites.

  • This study presents an innovative AI-driven approach to assess the ultimate axial load in Double-Skinned Profiled Steel sheet Composite Walls (DPSCWs). Utilizing a dataset of 80 entries, seven input parameters were employed, and various AI techniques, including Linear Regression, Polynomial Regression, Support Vector Regression, Decision Tree Regression, Decision Tree with AdaBoost Regression, Random Forest Regression, Gradient Boost Regression Tree, Elastic Net Regression, Ridge Regression, and LASSO Regression, were evaluated. Decision Tree Regression and Random Forest Regression emerged as the most accurate models. The top three performing models were integrated into a hybrid approach, excelling in accurately estimating DPSCWs' ultimate axial load. This adaptable hybrid model outperforms traditional methods, reducing errors in complex scenarios. The validated Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model showcases less than 1% error, enhancing reliability. Correlation analysis highlights robust predictions, emphasizing the importance of steel sheet thickness. The study contributes insights for predicting DPSCW strength in civil engineering, suggesting optimization and database expansion. The research advances precise load capacity estimation, empowering engineers to enhance construction safety and explore further machine learning applications in structural engineering.

  • Composite steel plate deep beam (CDB) is proposed as a lateral resisting member, which is constructed by steel plate and reinforced concrete (RC) panel, and it is connected with building frame through high-strength bolts. To investigate the seismic performance of the CDB, tests of two 1/3 scaled specimens with different length-to-height ratio were carried out under cyclic loads. The failure modes, load-carrying capacity, hysteretic behavior, ductility and energy dissipation were obtained and analyzed. In addition, the nonlinear finite element (FE) models of the specimens were established and verified by the test results. Besides, parametric analyses were performed to study the effect of length-to-height ratio, height-to-thickness ratio, material type and arrangement of RC panel. The experimental and numerical results showed that: the CDBs lost their load-carrying capacity because of the large out-of plane deformation and yield of the tension field formed on the steel plate. By increasing the length-to-height ratio of steel plate, the load-carrying capacity, elastic stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens were significantly enhanced. The ultimate loading capacity increased with increasing the length-to-height ratio of steel plate and yield strength of steel plate; and such capacity increased with decreasing of height-to-thickness ratio of steel plate and gap. Finally, a unified formula is proposed to calculate their ultimate loading capacity, and fitting formula on such indexes are provided for designation of the CDB.
