This paper presents a finite element procedure to estimate the ultimate strength of space frames considering spread of plasticity. The improved displacement field is introduced based on the inclusion of second-order terms of finite rotations. All the non-linear terms due to bending moment, torsional moment, and axial force are precisely considered. The concept of plastic hinges is introduced and the incremental load/displacement method is applied for elasto-plastic analyses. The initial yield surface is defined based on the residual stress, and the full plastification surface is considered under the combined action of axial forces, bending and torsional moments. The elasto-plastic stiffness matrices are derived using the flow rule and the normality condition of the limit function. Finite element solutions for the ultimate strength of space frames are compared with available solutions and experimental results.

An experimental investigation on the behavior of reinforced concrete coupling beams is presented. The test variables are the span-to-depth ratio, the ratio of flexural reinforcements and the ratio of shear rebars. The distribution of arch action and truss action which compose the mechanism of shear resistance is discussed. The increase of plastic deformation after yielding transforms the shear transfer by arch action into by truss action. This study proposes the deformation model for reinforced concrete coupling beams considering the bond slip of flexural reinforcement. The strain distribution model of shear reinforcements and flexural reinforcements based on test results is presented. The yielding of flexural reinforcements determines yielding states and the ultimate states of reinforced concrete coupling beam are defined as the ultimate compressive strain of struts and the degradation of compressive strength due to principal tensile strain of struts. The flexural-shear failure mechanism determines the ultimate state of RC coupling beams. It is expected that this model can be applied to displacement-based design methods.

In tunnelling by NATM convergence data are most Importantly to ascertain the safety of tunnel. Therefore, a reliable method is required that can predict ultimate displacements by using earler displacement data. Displacement forecasting method is classified into statistical method and functional regression method. Convergence data measured in Seoul subway 5~45 site during '92.5 ~ '92.12 were analyzed by above said two methods. The analysis results of convergence data show that the functional regression method is more relieable in completely weathered rock, but the statistical method in slightly wearhred rock.

In this study, We examine closely the capacity spectrum method which a kind of displacement-based method evaluated by displacement of structure as an alternative to the load-based analysis method. The displacement-based method can easily review the strength of structure, seismic performance, ductility. Seismic performance by using capacity spectrum method is divided into design response spectrum and capacity spectrum. We can diagram design response spectrum by deciding the design seismic factor depending on performance target, site classification, seismic level, return period as UBC-97. Capacity spectrum is a load-displacement curve obtained by Push-over analysis considering the geometric parameter and the material parameter. We execute the seismic performance evaluation by using the capacity spectrum method to reinforced concrete pier which has been seismic design. As a result, We confirmed that there is a yield point and a ultimate point close by design response spectrum of UBC-97.

This paper presents a Strut-and-Tie Model for reinforced concrete (RC) columns subject to lateral loading. The proposed model is based on the loading path for the post-yield state, and the geometries of struts and tie are determined by the stress field of post-yield state. The analysis procedure of the Strut-and-Tie Model is that 1) the shear force and displacement at the initial yield state are calculated and 2) the relationship between the additional shear force and the deformation is determined by modifying the geometry of the longitudinal strut until the ultimate limit state. To validate the developed model, the ultimate strength and associated deformation obtained by experimental results are compared with the values predicted by the model. Good agreements between the proposed model and the experimental data are observed.

In evaluating the ultimate strength of a section for a concrete flexural member, the effect of member length is not usually considered, even though the strength tends to decrease with increase of member length. In this paper the influence of specimen length on flexural compressive strength of concrete was evaluated. For this purpose, a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compression and bending moment were tested using four different length-to-depth ratios(from 1, 2, 3 and 4) of specimens with compressive strength of 58 MPa. Results indicate that the reduction in flexural compressive strength with increase of length-to-width ratios was apparent. A model equation was derived using regression analyses on the experimental data. It was also founded that the effect of specimen length on ultimate strain was negligible, but its effect of the ultimate load and the displacement at center of specimen was distinct. Finally more general model equation is also suggested.

This paper presents a deformable strut-and-tie model of determining the shear strengths and ultimate deformations of the shear-dominant reinforced concrete members. The proposed model originates from the strut-and-tie model concept and satisfies equilibrium, compatibility, constitutive laws, and the geometric conditions of shear deformation. This study attempts to apply deformation patterns to strut-and-tie models. The yielding of flexural reinforcements determines yielding states and the ultimate states of reinforced concrete coupling beam are defined as the ultimate compressive strain of struts and the degradation of compressive strength due to principal tensile strain of struts. The validity and accuracy of the proposed model is then tested against available experimental data. The parameters reviewed include the ratios of truss action and arch action, the reinforcement ratios, and the shear span-depth ratio. It is expected that this model can be applied to displacement-based design methods.

This study is an numerical study of predicting the behavior of anchor embedded in weathered rocks, subjected to uplift loads, about ultimate pullout capacity and the failure mechanism. Factors influencing the behavior of anchors were investigated by reviewing the data about in-situ anchor tests performing numerical modelling with changing the bondage length of anchor, diameter of anchor body and diameter of tenden, and by Correlations between those factors were evaluated to apply them to predict the behavior of anchors. As results of numerical analysis, a linear relationship between bondage length, diameter of anchor body and diameter of tenden with ultimate pullout capacity was obtained on the one hand, from the result of numerical analysis changing the Young's modulus of weathered rock, this parameter was found to inflence to load-displacement and ultimate pullout capacity within the range of 10%, which was mot so significant to affect.
Seismic performance of coupling beams not designed for ductility is examined. Eight 1:4 scale coupling beam specimens, with seven reinforced concrete sections and one composite section, were tested under cycles of push-pull action. Characteristics of the specimens include moderate shear span ratio in the range of 2.5-3.5, high main reinforcement ratio at 3-4% and small to large stirrup spacing with 90- degree hooks. All the reinforced concrete specimens failed in a brittle manner. Displacement ductility of specimens with large stirrup spacing (${\geq}$140 mm) is in the range of 3 to 5. Seismic performance of the specimens is also examined using the ultimate drift angle and the amount of energy dissipated. Correlating the test data, an empirical relationship is proposed to estimate the ultimate drift angle of a class of coupling beams considered in the study not designed for ductility.

In ship's structure, deck and bottom plate are main strength member subjected to the inplane load due to longitudinal bending, i.e. tensile and/or compressive load. The deck and bottom plate are subdivided into many plate members by stiffeners and girders longitudinally and transversely. Since the plate members are thin, it is likely to be collapsed under compressive load, and when we consider the local strength of deck and bottom, the plate members play an important role in the longitudinal strength. Therefore the precise analysis of their compressive ultimate strength is required for the optimal design of ship's structures. In this paper, the modified analytical method using the incremental form of principle of virtual displacement is introduced to determine the compressive ultimate load of plate members. The results by the present method is satisfactory, and the present method is more effective and economical than the finite element method.
