  • The external, unbonded prestressed concrete(PSC) members exhibit very different structural behavior from that of internal bonded PSC members because of eccentricity change and slip occurrence during loading process. The purpose of the present study is to propose the ultimate failure stresses of prestressing (PS) steels for those external unbonded PSC members. To this end, a comprehensive analysis has been made using the nonlinear finite element analysis program developed recently for external unbonded PSC members by authors. A series of major influencing variables have been included in the analysis. It was found that the span-depth ratio, neutral axis depth-effective depth ratio, load geometry, amount of ordinary steel, and prestressing steel ration have great influence for the ultimate failue stress of PS steel is preposed and is compared with experimental dat as well as existing formulas for internal unbonded members. The Comparison indicates that the proposed equation agrees relatively well with experimental data and that existing formulas including ACI and AASHTO equations show some discrepancies from experimental ones. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of prestressed concrete structures with external unbonded tendons.

  • Three post-tensioned lightweight concrete beams were tested to examine the effect of the reinforcement index on the unbonded tendon stress at ultimate strength of the beams. The reinforcement index selected for main variables were 0.06, 0.15, 0.30. Test results showed that the stress of the unbonded tendons in the ultimate strength of the post-tensioned lightweight concrete beams can be conservatively evaluated using the empirical equations specified in ACI 318-08.

  • Recently, the using PSC with external unbonded tendons is increased. However, the behavior of external unbonded tendons is different with that of bonded internal tendon at ultimate state by compatibility condition, the slip with friction at deviator and the change of tendon eccentricity e.t.c., So, the analytical research considered the effect of these inherent characters was performed and the tendency of external unbonded tendons was estimated by numerical examples. By the analytical results, load-deflection relationship and stress increment of external unbonded tendons were similar to those of internal bonded tendon at initial elastic behavior state. Those characters were, however, smaller than those character of internal bonded tendons. For external unbonded tendons, if the 1 deviator which is positioned at maximum moment point and more 2 deviators which are position between maximum moment point and support are existed, the flexural behavior is similar to internal bonded tendons.

  • Recently, several prestressed concrete box girder bridges have experienced severe cracking along the tendon path when prestress force has been transferred to the anchorage zone. The purpose of the present study is therefore to explore characteristics of the local stress distribution, to study the effects of section geometry of anchorage zones, i.e., tendon inclination, tendon eccentricity and concrett. cover thickness anti to develop recornrncnd;itions for specific design criteria for post~tensioned a:lchorage zones. 7'0 accomplish these objectives, a cc~mprehen sive nonlinar finite element study has been conducted. From this study, realistic forrnulas for crackinq and ultimate load capacities are proposed. 'These equations reasonably well predict the crackinq and ultimate loads of prestressed concrete anchorage zones.

  • This paper is a part of research series for the verification of the proposed Moon/Lim design equation. An analytical study was performed to examine the relation between the flexural behavior and the unbonded tendon stress of PSC members. The strain compatibility assumption was used in this study since previous studies showed that the stress variations of tendon had a close relation with the member displacements. The proposed equation has been developed with the same assumption of strain compatibility. Therefore the analytical procedure with the strain compatibility assumption was developed to compute the member displacements of previous tests. Then the analytical results were compared with tests results. The comparison showed that the strain compatibility assumption can be properly applicable to the design equation. Based on the analytical results, the relation between the tendon stress and the member flexural behavior at ultimate was examined. A parametric study also carried out with regard to the member displacements. As results, the parameters used for the proposed equation were proven to be proper for the computation of tendon stress.

  • In the previous study in relation to the current study, a test program for the verification of the proposed design equation was carried with fourteen prestressed concrete beams with unbonded tendons. Experimental results were compared with the computed results by the proposed design equations. The previous design equations are ACI code, AASHTO LRFD code, the analysis equation with the strain compatibility, Harajli/Kanj' design equation, Chakrabarti' design equation. As a result of comparative studies, it turned out that the proposed design equation could predict the ultimate tendon stress with comparatively high accuracy.

  • This study deals with literature review, developing a predicting equation for the ultimate stress of prestressing steel, and experimental test with the parameters affecting the ultimate stress of prestressing steel in reinforced concrete beams strengthened by external prestressing. The ACI predicting equation for the ultimate stress of unbonded prestressing steel is analyzed to develop a new integrated predicting equation. The proposed predicting equation takes rationally the effect of internal reinforcing bars into consideration as a function of prestressing steel depth to neutral depth ratio. In the experimental study, steel reinforced concrete beams strengthened using external prestressing steel are tested with the test parameters having a large effect on the ultimate stress of prestressing steel. The test parameters includes reinforcing bar and external prestressing steel reinforcement ratios, and span to depth ratio. The test results are analyzed to confirm the rationality and applicability of the proposed equation for predicting the ultimate stress of external prestressing steel.

  • Recently, the externally prestressed unbonded concrete structures are increasingly being built. The mechanical behavior of prestressed concrete beams with external unbonded tendon is different from that of normal bonded PSC beams in that the slip of tendons at deviators and the change of tendon eccentricity occurs as external loads are applied in external unbonded PSC beams. The purpose of the present paper is therefore to evaluate the flexural behavior by performing static flexural test according to tendon area and tendon force. From experimental results, before flexural cracking, there was no difference between external members and bonded members. However, after cracking, yielding load of reinforcement, ultimate load, and the tendon stress of external members was lower than that of bonded members. For the relationship of load-tendon stress, the increasing of tendon strain was inversely proportional to the initial tendon force. However, even if the initial tendon force was large, the tendon strain with small effective stress was smaller than that with large effective stress. The concrete compressive strain was proportional to the effective stress of external tendon. From the comparison between test results and codes, the ACI-318 could not consider the effect of tendon force or effective stress, and especially the results of ACI-318 were very small, so it was very conservative. And the AASHTO 1994 could be influenced on the tendon area, initial force and effective stress, but as it was made on the basis of internal unbonded tendon, its results were much larger than the test results. For this reason, the new correct predict equation of external tendon stress will be needed.

  • The current study is a part of series of research about the evaluation method of the unbonded tendon stress in prestressed concrete member at flexural failure. As the first part. previous design equations were examined in oder to find whether any modifications may be needed. A total of 167 experimental results tested for more than 40 years were gathered to build D/B and then previous proposed and codified equations were evaluated with the experimental relsults. The ACI Code equation and Naaman, Harajli, and Chakrabarti's equations were chosen for the purpose of examination. Then, the followings were obtained from the analytical examination. It is desirable to compute the tendon stress with the member analysis method instead of the sectional analysis method which has been used in the current ACI Code. The tendon stress may also be influenced significantly by the amount of ordinary bonded reinforcements and the loading types. And the current ACI Code overestimated the effect of span/depth ratio. As results, it was concluded that the revision of the ACi Code equation should be considered positively. Then, a new design has to be proposed with the reasonable and comprehensive investigation about influential factors on the tendon stress variation.
