A 23.5 kg179, 8 months olds non-spaycd female Rottweiler dog was submitted to the veterinary teaching animal hospitals Chonbuk: national university, for chronic bitten trauma on right foreleg with pain, lameness, and pronation. The patient fought with a neighboring dog about five months ago and had mild anorexia, depression, bolt normal walking at that time. CBC and blood chemical examination were in normal range. Physical examination resulted in the right foreleg with edema and interval rotation of carpal joint. Radiograph of the right carpus showed varus and subluxation. We finally diagnosed the patient as the growth deformity of distal radius and ulna caused by medial premature closure of distal radial physis. Osteotomy was performed fur reforming of the varus of the distal radius and ulna with 6-hole straight plate and six 3.5 mm screws. Panarthrodcsis of carpus was preformed for correcting subluxation using 6-hole T-shaped plate and four 3.5 mm screws with cortical onlay autograft and strengthened by two 3.5 mm screws and tension wire band in lateral aspect of the carpus. Follow-up radiographs after 16 weeds of the surgery showed complete coaptation of osteotomy sire of the radius and uIna. After 6 months of the procedurc, talc plate, screws and the wire were removed except 7-shaped plate and four screws fur arthrodesis. The patient was seen in normal forelimb and could walk and run without lameness after 7 months of the procedure.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of xenogenic bone plate system (equine bone) using a three-dimensional finite element ulna fracture model. The model was used to calculate the Von Mises stress (VMS) and stress distribution in fracture healing periods with metallic bone plate and xenogenic bone plate systems, which are installed while the canine patient is standing. Bone healing rate (BHR) (0%) and maximum VMS of the xenogenic plate was similar to the yield strength of equine bone (125 MPa). VMS at the ulna and fracture zones were higher with the xenogenic bone plate than with the metallic bone plate at BHRs of 0% and 1%. Stress distributions in fracture zone were higher with the xenogenic bone plate than the metallic bone plate. This study results indicate that the xenogenic bone plate may be considered more beneficial for callus formation and bone healing than the metallic bon plate. Xeonogenic bone plate and screw applied in clinical treatment of canines may provide reduced stress shielding of fractures during healing.
Fracture stabilization techniques continue to evolve and provide approaches that minimize the iatrogenic trauma associated with surgical procedures. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) is a recently described method of biological internal fixation performed by introducing a bone plate via small insertional incisions that are remote to the fracture site. Indirect reduction techniques can generally be utilized when performing MIPO. In this case report, we describe MIPO of a radius-ulna fracture by indirect reduction using circular external fixation for alignment and distraction in a dog.
We report a case of a 69-year-old right-dominant man who had an open Monteggia-like lesion of the right elbow (Gustilo-Andersen IIIA) with severe proximal ulna bone loss associated with an ipsilateral ulnar shaft fracture due to a motorcycle accident. The patient underwent two-stage surgery. Wound debridement and bridging external fixation were performed at first. Three months later, a frozen massive osteochondral ulnar allograft was implanted and fixed with a locking compression plate. A superficial wound infection appeared 5 weeks after the second surgery. Superficial wound debridement, negative pressure therapy, and antibiotics were administered for 3 months, achieving infection healing. At 3 years post-surgery, the elbow range of motion was satisfactory with a Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score of 16.7. Radiographs and computed tomography scans showed good allograft-bone integration without allograft reabsorption or hardware loosening. Although not complication-free, massive ulna osteochondral allograft implantation can be considered a valid option in cases of open Monteggia-like lesions associated with ulnar shaft fracture and severe bone loss in active patients, whenever osteosynthesis or joint replacement is not a proper solution. This type of bone stock restoration allows for future surgery, if needed.
A 1.4 kg adult great homed owl was presented to the University of Missouri-Columbia Veterinary Teaching Hospital after being found by the side of the highway. Physical examination revealed soft tissue injuries to the left wing and leg, and good body condition (body score 4/5). The radiographs revealed comminuted fracture of the diaphysis of the left tibiotarsus (severe) and ulna (mild). Closed reduction of the fracture was performed to the left tibiotarsus and ulna. System combining an intramedually (IM) Kirschner pin, IM Kirschner pin for external skeletal fixation, and polymethylmethacrylate was used for fracture repair. At 13 weeks, radiographs revealed that bridging callus was well formed over cortices of the fracture area. No physical, behavioral, or other assessable impairment was found during the rehabilitation period.
This paper presents the kinematic modeling of the human forearm rotation constructed with a spatial four-bar linkage. Especially, a circumduction of the distal ulna is modeled for a minimal displacement of the position of the hand during the forearm rotation from the supination to the pronation. To establish its model, four joint types of the four-bar linkage are, firstly, assigned with the reasonable grounds, and then the spatial linkage having the URUU (Universal-Revolute-Universal-Universal) joint type is proposed. Kinematic analysis is conducted to show the behavior of the distal radio-ulna as well as to evaluate the angular displacements of all the joints. From the simulation result, it is, finally, revealed that the URUU spatial linkage can be substituted for the URUR (Universal-Revolute-Universal-Revolute) spatial linkage by a kinematic constraint.
The vibrational response of the two bones in a Volleyball player's arm under ball impact is conducted. The two bones in hand, Ulna and Radius, are modeled as two cylindrical shells. The formulations associated with the shells' vibration are obtained using the energy method. Then, the results are extracted with the aid of the two-dimensional form of DQM in conjunction with Runge-Kutta. The results are validated by means of a published paper. Lastly, the role of parameters in determining vibrational frequency as well as deflection is explored through parametric studies. It was shown that the impactor speed and the time of the impact could be essential factors in determining the vibration behavior of the bones. This work can be used in the further investigation of the behavior of bones and physiological structures.
Many mathematical techniques have been developed to determine the muscle forces and force distribution in biomechanical human model, because it is so important to understand internal forces resisting external loading. However, a three-dimensional mathematical model of wrist joint, which is essential to develop solid modeling and artificial wrist joint, has not been well developed. This study proposed to define three-dimensional mathematical model of distal radius and ulna of the human wrist and to develop a detailed two-dimensional finite element through comparisons to existing analytical models and experimental tests. This mathematical model were accurately recreated, allowing the internal tendon force as well as force transmission and distribution through the distal radios and ulna during dynamic loadings. The results found in this study indicate and support the findings of other investigator that cyclic loading condition results in higher compression force on distal radius and ulna and may be source of wrist disorder.
A study on the water pollution of Gumho river by the relationship between physio-chemical conditions and water quality level by phytoplankton was examined at 7 sampling positions during the period from Aug. 1 to Nov. 30, 1981.
