Solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiances incident on a horizantal surface at Taegu of Korea during 1995-1998 were calculated with 5 min averges of measuremets taken every 30 seconds by a broadband UV-B sensor. The maximum and minimum of monthly averages of daily UV-B dose were 15.89 KJ m-2 day-1 in April and 3.91KJm-2 day-1 on May 22, 1998 and 1.230W m-2 at 12 : 45, July 13, 1998, respectively. Increasing trend in annual maximum of instantaneous UV-B radiation was averaged to 12.0% per year during 1995-1998 of observation period.
To investigate the effects of different UV-B levels on growth and biochemical defense response in plants, cucumber plants were subjected to three levels of biologically effective ultraviolet-B $(UV-B_{BE})$ radiation [daily dose: 0.03 (No), 6.40 (Low) and $11.30\;(High)\;kJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, $UV-B_{BE}$] in the growth chambers for 3 weeks during the early growth period. Enhanced UV-B radiation drastically decreased both dry weight and leaf area of cucumber. With increasing UV-B intensity, chlorophyll content was decreased, however the level of malondialdehyde was highly increased linearly. Total contents of ascorbic acid and glutathione were tended to increase by UV-B, while the ratios of dehydroascorbate/ascorbate and oxidized glutathione/reduced glutathione were significantly increased with increasing UV-B intensity in cucumber. All the enzyme activities investigated (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, dehydroascorbate reductase, guaiacol peroxidase etc.) in cucumber were increased by the UV-B enhancement. These results suggested that enhanced UV-B irradiation caused photooxidative stress in cucumber plant and resulted in significant reduction in plant growth. Biochemical protection responses might be activated to prevent the leaves from damaging effects of oxidative stress generated by UV-B irradiation.
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is associated with the development of adverse effects in skin. Among the three types of UV rays, UV-B causes the most damaging effects, inducing sunburn and penetrating the outer skin, resulting in DNA mutations and skin cancer. The objective of this study was to formulate a UV-protective film by incorporating Ecklonia cava extracts. Cells covered with the film were exposed to UV-B (50, 80, and $100mJ/cm^2$). To determine the protective effects of the film, we evaluated cell viability, intracellular ROS generation, and apoptosis. We found that all E. cava extracts absorbed UV light and exhibited protective effects against UV-B-induced photodamage. Among the protective films examined in this study, that incorporating an E. cava 70% ethanol extract (70EX) formed the most effective protection against UV-B in HaCaT cells. These findings suggest that the application of film containing E. cava extract could prevent UV-B-induced photodamage, and offer protection against the detrimental effects of UV radiation, thus maintaining physiological condition.

Since UV-B radiation measuring networks have not been established, numerical models which calculate the flux from other readily available meteorological measurements may play an important role. That is, such a problem can be solved by using parameterization models such as two stream approximation, the delta-Eddington method, doubling method, and discrete ordinate method. However, most UV-B radiative transfer models have not been validated with measurements, because such models are not intended as practical computational schemes for providing surface estimates of UV-B radiation. The main concern so far has been to demonstrate model sensitivity for cloudless skies. In particular, few have been concerned with real cloud information. Clouds and aerosols have generally been incorporated as constituents of particular atmospheric layers with specified optical depths and scattering properties. The parameterization model presented here is a combination of a detailed radiative transfer algorithm for a coludless sky radiative process and a more approximate scheme to handle cloud effects. The model input data requires a daily measurement of the total ozone amount plus a daily record of the amount and type of cloud in the atmosphere. Measurements for an examination of the models at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Pusan National University have been takenfrom February, 1995. These models can be used to calculate present and future fluxes where measurements have not been taken, and construct climatologies for the period before ozone depletion began.
To investigate the effects of UV-B on fatty acid composition, lipid peroxidation and biochemical defense responses of plant, kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was subjected to enhanced UV-B irradiation [daily dose : 0.02.(No UV-B) and 11.36 (enhanced UV-B) $kJ\;m^{-2};UV-B_{BE}$] for 3 weeks. UV-B drastically inhibited both height and dry weight of kidney bean. The content of malondialdehyde significantly increased by about 50% after 3 weeks of UV-B irradiation. The ratio of unsaturated to saturated fatty acids of kidney bean was increased by UV-B irradiation. Three major polyamines of kidney bean leaves : putrescine, spermidine and spermine, were observed. All of the polyamine contents were increased with UV-B irradiation. These results suggested that enhanced UV-B radiation caused oxidative stress on lipids and biochemical protection responses might be activated to prevent from damaging effects of oxidative stress generated by UV-B irradiation.
Etiolation of plant leaves evoke to be photosynthetically inactive because plant leaves are unable to convert photochlorophyllide to chlorophyllide in the absence of light. In addition, UV-B radiation plays an important role in photomorphogenesis and excessive UV-B radiation decreases photosynthesis and causes to damage to cellular DNA. In the present study, two electrical lights obtained with the ultraviolet lamp and moderate lamp were employed to young plants soybean (Glycine max Merr. var Seoritae). After treatment of different lights, young plants were harvested for the determination of pigment contents and chlorophyll fluorescence. The contents of carotenoids and anthocyanins were significantly enhanced with the excessive UV-B radiation. Excessive UV-B light reduced dramatically photosynthetic efficiency causing an irreversible damage on PSII in comparison to the controls treated under normal illumination. As the treatment of normal illumination after dark treatment, the contents of carotenoids and anthocyanains were not changed in the leaves and photosynthetic ability were retained. Therefore, Seoritae soybean leaves might protect themselves from excessive UV-B radiation with up-regulation of antioxidants.

We examined the effect of two greenhouse covering materials (glass or solid polycarbonate sheets) on the light environment and growth of tomato and cucumber plants. Spectral analysis showed that polycarbonate sheets entirely blocked radiation in both the UV - B (300 - 320 nm) and UV - A (320 - 400 nm) ranges, whereas glass transmitted UV - A and was only opaque to UV - B. The transmittance of photosynthetically active radiation (400 - 700 nm) and near infrared radiation (700 - 1100 nm) was higher in polycarbonate than glass. Air and soil temperatures were not significantly different between greenhouses covered with either material. The growth of cucumber plants was slightly affected by covering materials, whereas no significant changes in growth parameters were observed for tomato plants. The color parameters of tomato fruits were affected by the cover material, whereas cucumber fruits showed similar coloration in both glass and polycarbonate greenhouses.
This study has carried out to evaluate the effect of NaCI as electrolyte of single (electrolysis and UV process) and complex (electrolysis/UV) processes for the purpose of removal and mineralization of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye in water. It also evaluated the synergetic effect on the combination of electrolysis and UV process. The experimental results showed that RhB removal of UV process was decreased with increase of NaCl, while RhB removal of electrolysis and electrolysis/UV process was increased with increase of NaCI. The decolorization rate of the RhB solution in every process was more rapid than the mineralization rate identified by COD removal. The latter took longer time for further oxidation. Absorption spectra of an aqueous solution containing RhB showed a continued diminution of the RhB concentration in the bulk solution: concomitantly, no new absorption peaks appeared. This confirmed the decolorization of RhB, i.e., the breakup of the chromophores. It was observed that RhB removal in electrolysis/UV process is similar to the sum of the UV and electrolysis. However, it was found that the COD of RhB could be degraded more efficiently by the electrolysis/UV process than the sum of the two individual process. A synergetic effect was demonstrated in electrolysis/UV process.
This study was carried out to investigate the growth responses of Pinus densiflora seedlings to enhanced UV-B environment for 16 weeks in the field condition. The seedlings were treated with one of three levels of UV-B dosages - ambient UV-B, ambient + 3.2, and ambient + 5.2 KJ m$^{-2}$day$^{-1}$ and the irradiation was performed at the stage before the germination, the fully expanded cotyledon, and the primary needles grown more than 0.8cm in length of the seedlings, respectively. Enhanced UV-B irradiation reduced the height and the root collar diameter growth, and dry mass production of the seedling, and T/R ratio was increased by the UV-B treatment. Difference in seedling growth was observed by difference in time of the UV-B treatment. Among the seedlings which were treated with ambient - 3.2 KJ m$^{-2}$day$^{-1}$, height and root collar diameter growth was relatively high in the seedling received the UV-B treatment at the stage before the germination. The lowest dry mass production was observed in the seedlings received the UV-B at stage of cotyledon both in two levels of enhanced UV-B treatment. Chlorophyll concentration was reduced by enhanced UV-B irradiation, and chlorophyll a/b ratio was increased by the UV-B treatment.
