  • In the area of speech vocoder systems, the MBE vocoder allows the high quality and low bit rate. In the MBE parameters detection, the dicision methods of V/UV region proposed until now are dependent highly to the other parameters, fundamental frequency and formant information. In this paper, thus, we propose a new V/UV detection method that uses a zero-crossing rate of flatten harmonices spectrum. This method can reduce the influences of the other parameters for the V/UV regions detection.

  • An all-transparent ultraviolet (UV) photodetector was fabricated by structuring $p-NiO/n-SnO_2/ITO$ on a glass substrate. $SnO_2$ is an important semiconductor material because of its large bandgap, high electron mobility, high transmittance (as high as 80% in the visible range), and high stability under UV light. For these reasons, $SnO_2$ is suitable for a range of applications that involve UV light. In order to form a highly transparent p-n junction for UV detection, $SnO_2$ was deposited onto a device containing NiO as a high-transparent metal conductive oxide for UV detection. We demonstrated that all-transparent UV photodetectors based on $SnO_2$ could provide a definitive photocurrent density of $4nA\;cm^{-2}$ at 0 V under UV light (365 nm) and a low saturation current density of $2.02nA{\times}cm^{-2}$. The device under UV light displayed fast photoresponse with times of 31.69 ms (rise-time) and 35.12 ms (fall-time) and a remarkable photoresponse ratio of 69.37. We analyzed the optical and electrical properties of the $NiO/SnO_2$ device. We demonstrated that the excellent properties of $SnO_2$ are valuable in transparent photoelectric device applications, which can suggest various routes for improving the performance of such devices.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the variations of catechu dyed fabrics under UV irradiation. Catechu dyed cotton and silk fabrics mordanted with Fe and Cu were irradiated with UV under dry and wet conditions, and then were evaluated on color changes and mechanical properties. Owing to UV irradiation, the K/S values of catechu dyed cotton fabrics increased until a certain amount of time but those of catechu-dyed silk fabrics increased continuously. Cu mordanting cotton fabrics showed the smallest changes due to the UV treatment, and silk fabrics mordanted with Fe showed the largest changes. Wetted fabrics were accelerated maillard browning by UV. Un-mordanted cotton fabrics treated with UV under dry conditions changed its YR color to Y, but changed its Y color to YR under wet conditions. However, mordanted cotton fabrics treated with UV didn't change their color. Dyed silk fabrics except those Fe mordanted and in wet conditions continued to keep their color after UV irradiation. Silk fabric mordanted with Fe under wet conditions changed its Y color to YR by UV irradiation. UV irradiation didn't affect the mechanical properties of catechu-dyed cotton and silk fabrics in any significant way.

  • In this study, UV-catalyzed $H_2O_2$ oxidation and $H_2O_2$ oxidation to remove contaminants from photo processing chemicals were investigated at various conditions. Photo processing chemicals contains high concentrations of organic compounds and has very low biodegradability. Hydrogen peroxide is subjected to gradual decomposition as metastable substance. In the process, short-lived and highly reactive hydroxyl radicals are formed. The decomposition can be significantly accelerated by use of appropriate catalyst, such as ultraviolet radiation. The experiments were conducted in a UV-free reflecting reactor in batch and a high-pressure mercury lamp was used as UV source. Mixing, cooling and ventilation of the reactor were operated during experiments. In $UV/H_2O_2$ oxidation and $H_2O_2$ oxidation, the removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, TOC and chromaticity increased with the increase of $H_2O_2$ dosage and were higher in the controlled pH condition of 3 than in original pH condition of 8. In $UV/H_2O_2$ oxidation under the optimum condition of pH 8 and 1.3 stoichiometric $H_2O_2$ dosage, the removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, TOC and chromaticity were 47.5%, 75.0% and 91.5% respectively and $BOD/COD_{Cr}$ ratio was significantly increased from 0.04 to 0.21.

  • The effect of nitric oxide (NO) on antioxidant system and protective mechanism against oxidative stress under UV-B radiation was investigated in leaves of maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings during 3 days growth period. UV-B irradiation caused a decrease of leaf biomass including leaf length, width and weight during growth. Application of NO donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), significantly alleviated UV-B stress induced growth suppression. NO donor permitted the survival of more green leaf tissue preventing chlorophyll content reduction and of higher quantum yield for photosystem II than in non-treated controls under UV-B stress, suggesting that NO has protective effect on chloroplast membrane in maize leaves. Flavonoids and anthocyanin, UV-B absorbing compounds, were significantly accumulated in the maize leaves upon UV-B exposure. Moreover, the increase of these compounds was intensified in the NO treated seedlings. UV-B treatment resulted in lipid peroxidation and induced accumulation of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) in maize leaves, while NO donor prevented UV-B induced increase in the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and $H_2O_2$. These results demonstrate that NO serves as antioxidant agent able to scavenge $H_2O_2$ to protect plant cells from oxidative damage. The activities of two antioxidant enzymes that scavenge reactive oxygen species, catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in maize leaves in the presence of NO donor under UV-B stress were higher than those under UV-B stress alone. Application of 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4, 4, 5, 5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3- oxide (PTIO), a specific NO scavenger, to the maize leaves arrested NO donor mediated protective effect on leaf growth, photosynthetic pigment and free radical scavenging activity. However, PTIO had little effect on maize leaves under UV-B stress compared with that of UV-B stress alone. $N^{\omega}$-nitro-L-arginine (LNNA), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), significantly increased $H_2O_2$ and MDA accumulation and decreased antioxidant enzyme activities in maize leaves under UV-B stress. This demonstrates that NOS inhibitor LNNA has opposite effects on oxidative resistance. From these results it is suggested that NO might act as a signal in activating active oxygen scavenging system that protects plants from oxidative stress induced by UV-B radiation and thus confer UV-B tolerance.

  • To investigate the effects of different UV-B levels on growth and biochemical defense response in plants, cucumber plants were subjected to three levels of biologically effective ultraviolet-B $(UV-B_{BE})$ radiation [daily dose: 0.03 (No), 6.40 (Low) and $11.30\;(High)\;kJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, $UV-B_{BE}$] in the growth chambers for 3 weeks during the early growth period. Enhanced UV-B radiation drastically decreased both dry weight and leaf area of cucumber. With increasing UV-B intensity, chlorophyll content was decreased, however the level of malondialdehyde was highly increased linearly. Total contents of ascorbic acid and glutathione were tended to increase by UV-B, while the ratios of dehydroascorbate/ascorbate and oxidized glutathione/reduced glutathione were significantly increased with increasing UV-B intensity in cucumber. All the enzyme activities investigated (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, dehydroascorbate reductase, guaiacol peroxidase etc.) in cucumber were increased by the UV-B enhancement. These results suggested that enhanced UV-B irradiation caused photooxidative stress in cucumber plant and resulted in significant reduction in plant growth. Biochemical protection responses might be activated to prevent the leaves from damaging effects of oxidative stress generated by UV-B irradiation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the growth and physiological response of shade intolerant and intermediate tree seedlings to enhanced UV-$B_{BE}$(biologically effective UV-B) radiation. The seedlings of Betula platyphylla var. japonica Hara(shade intolerant species) and Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance(shade intermediate species) were treated with one of the three levels of UV-$B_{BE}$ dosages - ambient UV-$B_{BE}$, ambient+3.2, and ambient+$5.2\;KJ\;m^{-2}day^{-1}$) for 14 weeks in the field condition. Height and root collar diameter growth, leaf area, and biomass production of the seedlings of two species were reduced by enhanced UV-B radiation. Leaf stomatal resistance to water vapor of the F. rhynchophylla seedling was increased by the UV-B increment. The reductions in total chlorophyll and carotenoid were more apparent in the F. rhynchophylla than B. platyphylla seedling. There was no statistically significant changes in the concentration of UV-B absorbing compound($A_{300}$) in the leaves of the two species among the UV-B treatment. However the $A_{300}$ tented to be increased in F. rhynchophylla by enhanced UV-B radiation. These results indicate that the growth and the physiological and biochemical responses between B. platyphylla and F. rhynchophylla were different to enhanced UV-B environment.

  • The effectiveness of a UV(ultra violet) disinfection system depends on the characteristics of the waste water, flow conditions, the intensity of UV radiation, the amount of time the microorganisms are exposed to the radiation, and the reactor configuration. The wast water flow conditions are important factors in the design of UV disinfection system from the point of enhancement view of UV disinfection. The turbulent energy intensity in the wake by the vortex shedding are effective for UV radiation. Therewith the effectiveness of vortex generator is considered as a enhancement of UV disinfection. The experimental results presented give important evidences and explain that it is possible to predict UV disinfection performance based on flow experiments. An experimental investigation of two types of the vortex generator is presented. The qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the wake are made by flow visualization using smoke wire method and the measurement of vortex frequencies in the wind tunnel. From the experiment, following results were obtained that the delta wing type vortex generator is more effective than circular type because of the higher vortex frequencies and the smaller drag.

  • This research evaluates the antibacterial and transparency properties of UV-curable paint augmented with 20wt% copper particles. The transparency assessment indicated that the paint maintained a total luminous transmittance of 90% or above, thereby matching or surpassing the performance of standard UV-curing paints. To further test its antibacterial capabilities, wooden flooring boards were coated with the UV-curable paint laced with 20wt% copper particles, which had been surface-modified with a silane coupling agent. Following the fatigue tests of these treated boards, an impressive bacterial reduction rate of 99.9% was noted after a span of 6 hours, demonstrating the paint's exceptional antibacterial performance.

  • The photocatalytic degradation of a textile diazo dye in aqueous solution has been investigated under Solar and UV-A light. The effect of various parameters such as concentration of dye, amount of catalyst and pH on the degradation of dye has been studied. Addition of hydrogen peroxide, ammonium persulphate and isopropanol strongly influences the degradation rate. Kinetic analysis of photodegradation reveals that the degradation follows approximately pseudo first order kinetics according to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. Carbon dioxide, nitrate and sulphate ions have been identified as mineralisation products. The photocatalyst ZnO was found to be more efficient in UV-A light than in Solar light.
