  • A 10" carbon nanotube field emission display device was fabricated with a novel structure with a hopping electron spacer (HES) by screen printing technique. HES plays a role of preventing the broadening of electron beams emitted from carbon nanotubes without electrical discharge during operation. The structure of the novel tetrode is composed of carbon nanotube emitters on a cathode electrode, a gate electrode, an extracting electrode coated on the top side of a HES, and an anode. HES contains funnel-shaped holes of which the inner surfaces are coated with MgO. Electrons extracted through the gate are collected inside the funnel-shaped holes. They hop along the hole surface to the top extracting electrode. In this study the effects of the addition of HES on emission characteristics of field emission display were investigated. An active ozone treatment for the complete removal of residues of organic binders in the emitter devices was applied to the field emission display panel as a post-treatment.

  • We have investigated the long term variability of the intensities of the broad-line region emission lines in the UV spectra of Seyfert I galaxy NGC 5548 from 1973-1996. We have obtained the following results: 1) a high level correlation between the intensities of emission lines as well as between intensities of emission lines and continuum fluxes was discovered. With increasing wavelength the correlation in both cases becomes weaker, 2) the relationship between the intensity of emission lines and the flux radiation in the continuum can be expressed by a power law function with coefficients of ${\alpha}{\approx}0.8-1.1$ for different lines. When the difference between the wavelengths of spectral lines and the continuum is increased, the value of the power function decreases, and 3) it was found that the magnitude of the variability of the line intensities are weaker than the range of variability of the continuum fluxes. The magnitude of the variability of the line intensities and the continuum fluxes increase at longer wavelengths.

  • We obtained UV light curves of 44i Bootis, a W UMa type star from the IUE low dispersion spectra. In order to investigate variations of the emission lines from chromospheric activity and transition region, UV line intensity has been measured for CI, CII, ClV, SiIV, HeII lines. Through plotting the line intensity with the orbital phase, we found that emission lines showed maximum at $0^p.2;and;0^p.8$ of the light curves, indicating the chromospheric activity of contact binary, 44i Bootis. We found that the light curves of UV emission lines is strongly modulated by the variation of chromospheric activities of 44i Bootis.

  • Purpose: This research is that prepare amorphous or crystalline ZnO thin films with pure strong UV emission on soda-lime-silica glass (SLSG) substrates by low-temperature annealing. Methods: Growth characteristic and optical properties of the amorphous or nano-crystalline ZnO thin films prepared on soda - lime - silica glass substrates by chemical solution deposition at 100, 150, 200, 250 and $300^{\circ}C$ were investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis, ultraviolet - visible - near infrared spectrophotometer, and photoluminescence. Results: The films exhibited an amorphous pattern even when finally annealed at $100^{\circ}C{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, while crystalline ZnO was obtained by prefiring at 250 and $300^{\circ}C$. The photoluminescence spectrum of amorphous ZnO films shows a strong NBE emission, while the visible emission is nearly quenched. Conclusions: These results indicate it should be possible to cheaply and easily fabricate ZnO-based optoelectronic devices at low temperature, below $200^{\circ}C$, in the future.

  • Fe II emission is a prominent and ubiquitous feature in the spectra of broad-line Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) by producing a pseudo-continuum from UV to optical with complex and strong blends of the numerous emission lines themselves, other emission lines, and continuum. Since theoretical modeling of such intricate Fe II emission is very difficult and still far from able to reproduce observed data in detail, an empirical iron emission template, derived from observations of a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy, is an essential and practical tool to obtain accurate measurements of all the emission lines and continuum in AGN spectra. However, the existing iron templates, based on the single prototypical strong Fe II emitter I Zw 1, are suffering from inadequate S/N and non-simultaneous, inconsistent data with limited wavelength coverage, which consequently limit the accuracy of all the spectral measurements. To overcome the limitations and construct an improved iron template with wide spectral coverage, high-quality UV and optical spectra for the new and better identified template galaxy, Mrk 493, were successfully obtained from our HST STIS program (GO-14744). We will show the preliminary results for multicomponent spectral decomposition of the data and template construction with application tests to various AGN spectra and comparison with previous templates.

  • We present $5-14{\mu}m$ Infrared Spectrograph spectra of 14 T Tauri stars which show Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) features and reside in 0.7 pc from ${\Theta}_1$ Ori C. The spectral types of nine out of 11 stars have spectral type information, with types ranging from K7-M5. These stars do not supply strong enough UV photons to excite PAH emission in their disks. Therefore, we consider the detection of PAH emission in disks around low mass stars illuminated by an external source of UV photons, namely, from Trapezium OB association, including ${\Theta}_1$ Ori C. The morphological features of PAH emission from most disks around K-M type host stars are unique, not belonging to any known classes of PAH features. We found that the PAH emission strengths decrease as the projected distance of the objects from ${\Theta}_1$ Ori C increase. We suggest future far-IR and submm/mm observations for better understanding of the characteristics and distribution of PAHs in these disks.

  • In this work, a new fluorescence emission measurement technology was introduced and experimentally compared with other measurement methods, such as the titration method and IR spectroscopy, to validate it for the oil oxidation measurement of electrical insulating oil. The oxidation characteristics of insulating oil were found to be fairly represented by the titration method and IR spectroscopy, and the results are comparable to a change in the fluorescence emission ratio that is defined as the shift in fluorescence intensity in the measured wavelength range. The result also shows that by the measurement of fluorescence emission ratio, it is possible to detect the oxidation of oil relatively earlier than by other methods. This study suggests that the developed technology can provide sufficient information for evaluating the insulating oil quality, and that the developed FER sensor can be used as an effective condition monitoring device of electrical insulating oil oxidation.

  • $BaMgP_2O_7$:Eu,Mn phosphors for white emission were synthesized and their luminescent properties were investigated under UV excitation. The phosphor emits two colors: a blue band by $Eu^{2+}$ and a red band by $Mn^{2+}$. Due to the efficient energy transfer from $Eu^{2+}$ to $Mn^{2+}$, the red emission positioned at 615 nm is greatly enhanced with increasing $Mn^{2+}$ content up to 17.5 mol%.

  • The films of Er-doped ZnO (ZnO:Er) were prepared onto MgO wafers by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis at $550^{\circ}C$. The concentration of Er in the deposition source varied from 0.5 wt% to 3.0 wt%. The crystallographic properties and surface morphologies of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. The properties of photoluminescence (PL) for the films were investigated by dependence of PL spectra on the Er concentration in the films. The films were grown as polycrystalline with a dominant direction of [002]. The grain size of the films were reduced by Er-doping. Er-doping enhanced the ultraviolet emission of ZnO:Er films. The ZnO:Er films prepared with the deposition source of 2.0 wt% Er showed the strongest ultraviolet light emission peak among the films in this study.
