In this study, an expanded graphite-titanium oxide composite is developed from expanded graphite (EG) and titanium n-butoxide (TNB). EG is synthesized by chemical intercalation of natural graphite (NG) and rapid expansion at high temperature. TNB is used as the titanium source. The performances of the prepared EG-$TiO_2$ composite are characterized by BET surface area measurements, scan electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The catalytic activities of the EG-$TiO_2$ composite are investigated by analysis of the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution under irradiation of UV light. Compared with the pristine $TiO_2$ and activity carbon-$TiO_2$ (AC-$TiO_2$) composite, the EG-$TiO_2$ composite shows very high efficiency against MB solution, and the EG could improve the photocatalytic effect of $TiO_2$ in the MB degradation reaction under the irradiation of UV light.
The objectives of this study are to manufacture an efficient $TiO_2$, photocatalyst and to delineate optimum operational parameters for TCE (trichloroethylene) degradation in a photocatalytic oxidative reactor. The $TiO_2$ photocatalyst irradiated by 365 nm UV light is expected to increase degradation of TCE in solution by a series of photocatalytic oxidations in the reactor. A new membrane $TiO_2$ photocatalyst wns eventually developed by coating a mixture of Davan-C(0.24 wt%) and PVA(0.16 wt%) on the surface of slips using the slip-casting method. Results show that increase in the number of coating of $TiO_2$ sol on surface of photocatalysts and in the surface thickness improved the endurance and photocatalysts, but these physical modifications caused significant decrease in the overall degradation efficiency of TCE. Pre-aeration or recirculation of the influents to the reactors containing TCE increased degradation efficiency of TCE. The optimum operational conditions far the surface area of photocatalysts and UV light intensity appeared to be $1.47\;mL/cm^2$ and $225\;W/cm^2{\times}100$, respectively, in the reactor. Based on the overall experimental results, the photocatalytic oxidation of TCE with the new membrane $TiO_2$ photocatalyst is found to be very effective under the operational conditions delineated in this study.

Degradation efficiency of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by using direct UV photolysis and $TiO_2$ photocatalysis was evaluated with both chemical analyses and acute toxicity assessment employing luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri. PCP was chosen as a target compound in this study because of its wide application as fungicide, bactericide, insecticide and wood preservative in agriculture and many industries, in addition to its well-known environmental consequences. The acute toxicity to the microbe was reduced by >60% when applying UV alone, and was completely removed when treated with $UV-TiO_2$ combinations. Toxicity reduction pattern determined with the Microtox Assay generally corresponds with the chemistry data: However, it should be noted that toxicity was greater than expected by the chemistry data. Formation of TCBQ, a toxic byprodut, could not explain observed microbial toxicity. These observations are probably due to the presence of unidentified toxic PCP byproducts, which may include polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans. When Microtox results were compared between different exposure time, i.e.,5 min and 15 min, an interesting pattern was noted with $UVA-\;TiO_2$ treatment. While no microbial toxicity was observed with 5 min exposure, an EC50 value of 45.4% was estimated with 15 min exposure, which was not observed in $UVB-\;TiO_2$ exposure. This result may suggest the presence of unidentified toxic degradation products generated in the later stage of treatment. Based on this study, $TiO_2$ photocatalyst, together with UVB photolysis could improve the removal of both PCP and its toxic derivatives in more efficient way. The Microtox Assay is promising and economical method for monitoring efficiency of wastewater treatment processes.

Thin film of $TiO_2$ was obtained by the sol-gel dip method on the brosilicate glass substrate. It was found that the film was about $1.5{\mu}m$ thick as obtained by 4 successive coatings and annealed at varied temperatures ranged from $300^{\circ}C$ to $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. The substrate used was having the surface area of $100mm^2$. Increasing the annealing temperature caused to change in mineralogical phase of titanium oxide i.e., amorphous, crystalline antase to rutile phases. The particle size of the titanium oxide film were ranged from $0.1{\sim}0.54{\mu}m$ estimated by the SEM analysis. The material showed an absorbance maximum at the wavelength 390nm obtained by UV-visible spectrophotometer. These results therefore, indicated that the $TiO_2$ film obtained relatively at low annealing temperature consisted predominantly with anatase phase; possessed higher photocatalytic behavior i.e., 2.4 times higher than that of only UV lamp irradiation.

Pd/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ composites were synthesized by a sol-gel technique using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), palladium (II) chlorite ($PdCl_2$) and titanium tetrachloride ($TiCl_4$) as the carbon, palladium and titanium precursors. The Pd/MWCNT/$TiO_2$ composites prepared were characterized by BET surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic activity of the composites was evaluated using the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV and visible light irradiation as a model.
The possibility of silicon oxidation through the aerial-diffusion of active oxygen species has been evaluated. The species originate from the surface of $TiO_2$ exposed by UV. Among process parameters such as UV intensity, substrate temperature and chamber pressure with oxygen, UV intensity was a major parameter to the influence on the oxide growth rate. When 1 kW high pressure Hg lamp was used as a UV source, the growth rate of silicon oxide was 8 times as faster as that of a 60 W BLB lamp. However, as the chamber pressure increased, the growth rate was declined due to the suppression of aerial diffusion of active oxygen species. According to the results, it could be confirmed that the aerial-diffusion of active oxygen species from UV-irradiated photocatalytic surface can be applied to a new method for preparing an ultra-thin silicon oxide at the range of relatively low temperature.
The Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared by a sol-gel method and were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX). The Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites were developed for the decomposition of organic dyes by using a UV lamp. The decomposition effect was investigated under various conditions, such as three selected non-biodegradable organic dyes like Methylene Blue (MB), Methyl Orange (MO), Rhodamine B (Rh.B), and in the presence of Fe and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$). The photocatalytic activity was derived from possible combination effects, such as (1) adsorption of ACF, (2) generation of electron/hole by $TiO_2$, (3) photo-Fenton reaction of Fe, and (4) oxidation of $Fe^{2+}\;to\;Fe^{3+}\;by\;H_2O_2$.
This study was performed to evaluate the application of $TiO_2$ on the photocatalytic treatment of swine wastewater. $TiO_2$ sol was prepared by hydrothermal method with the agent ratio($(C_2H_5)_2NH_2\;mol/Ti(OC_3H_7)_4\;mol)=1$ and R ratio ($H_2O\;mol/Ti(OC_3H_7)_4\;mol)=42$. The effect of parameter on the removal efficiency of swine wastewater in a batch type immobilized photocatalyst system such as initial pH, intensity of UV, dosage of $TiO_2$, air flow rate, and concentration of $H_2O_2$ was examined. Wastewater was effectively eliminated in the presence of both UV light illumination and $TiO_2$. Photocatalytic activity was higher in acidic condition compared to neutral and alkaline conditions. In addition, photocatalytic activity increased with increasing UV light intensity, dosage of $TiO_2$, the flow rate of air and the amount of $H_2O_2$ added as an oxidant, but the excess amount of $H_2O_2$ dosage decreased the removal efficiency.
Studies on visible-light-driven photocatalysis of air pollutants at indoor air quality (IAQ) levels have been limited. Current study investigated visible-light derived photocatalysis with N-doped and S-doped titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) for the control of benzene at indoor levels. Two preparation processes were employed for each of the two types of photocatalyst: urea-Degussa P-25 $TiO_2$ and titania-colloid methods for the N-doped $TiO_2$; and titanium isopropoxid- and tetraisopropoxide-thiourea methods for the S-doped $TiO_2$. Furthermore, two coating methods (EDTA- and acetylacetone-dissolving methods) were tested for both the N-doped and S-doped $TiO_2$. The two coating methods exhibited different photocatalytic degradation efficiency for the N-doped photocatalysts, whereas they did not exhibit any difference for the S-doped photocatalysts. In addition, the two doping processes showed different photocatalytic degradation efficiency for both the S-doped and N-doped photocatalysts. For both the N-doped and S-doped $TiO_2$, the photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) efficiency increased as the hydraulic diameter (HD) decreased. The degradation efficiency determined via a PCO system with visible-light induced $TiO_2$ was lower than that with UV-light induced unmodified $TiO_2$, which was obtained from previous studies. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that for the photocatalytic annular reactor with the HD of 0.5 cm, PCO efficiency increased up to 52% for the N-doped $TiO_2$ and 60% for the S-doped $TiO_2$. Consequently, when combined with the advantage of visible light use over UV light use, it is suggested that with appropriate HD conditions, the visible-light-assisted photocatalytic systems can also become an important tool for improving IAQ.
In this paper, a powerful photocatalyst based on carbon nanocomposite is developed in order to obtain a new material applicable in water treatment and especially for the discoloration of effluents used in the textile industry. For that, TiO2-graphene nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized by a mixture of Functionalized Graphene Sheet (FGS) and tetrachlorotitanium complexes to form FGS-TiO2 nanocomposite. In the presence of an anionic surfactant, we used a new chemical process to functionalize graphene sheets in order to make them an excellent medium for blocking and preventing the aggregation of TiO2 nanoparticles. The components of these nanocomposites are characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), which confirms the successful formation of the FGS-TiO2 nanocomposite. It was found that the TiO2 nanoparticles were dispersed uniformly on the graphene plane which possesses better charge separation capability than pure TiO2. The FGS-TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity compared to pure TiO2 for the removal of three dyes: such as Methylene Blue (MB), Bromophenol Blue (BB) and Alizarin Red-S (AR) in water. The removal process was fast and more efficient with FGS-TiO2 nanocomposite in daylight (in the absence of UV irradiation) compared to pure TiO2 nanoparticles without and under UV in all pH range.
