  • This paper considers hybrid beamforming for millimeter wave system in uplink transmission where multiple users send their data streams simultaneously. Hybrid beamforming has low-cost and low power consumption features compared to conventional digital beamforming schemes. We assume that each user uses one transmit antenna and sends one data stream, while the base station has multiple receive antennas and multiple radio frequency chains. Therefore, hybrid beamforming is performed only at the base station. We also assume that each user does not know instantaneous channel side information (CSI), while the base station is able to estimate the CSI from all users accurately. Under this channel assumption, the outage probability is not zero. We evaluate the outage probability of the considered hybrid beamforming as a performance metric through computer simulations. We show that the outage probability of hybrid beamforming approaches that of digital beamforming in some cases.

  • Along with advanced vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication technologies, platooning is regarded as one of the most promising form of autonomous driving solutions in order to increase road capacity. In this paper, we propose a novel V2V transmission scheme for safety message dissemination in platooning. The proposed scheme enhances the efficiency of channel access and multi-vehicle orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) transmission by taking advantage of triggered uplink access technique and null data packet feedback report protocol introduced in the sixth generation WLAN standard, IEEE 802.11ax. The simulation results prove that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional IEEE 802.11 transmission scheme throughout all measured vehicle density range.

  • Antenna selection based MIMO schedulers are proposed to achieve the optimal performance with low complexity in uplink multiuser MIMO/FDD system. In this paper, three heuristic schedulers are proposed to approach the optimal performance which is achieved by the optimal Brute-Force Scheduler. Two search methods called sub-set and full-set way are also discussed to set up the antenna channels to be the candidates of the scheduler. Simulation results show that the sum rate and BER performance of the proposed CSS and SOAS schemes are about the same to that of the brute-force scheduler with affordable complexity, while RC-SOAS with further reduced complexity achieves almost the optimal performance in the case of small number of antennas. Moreover, the complexity can be additionally reduced by the sub-set search method when the number of transmit and receive antennas are 2 respectively, which is applicable in the realistic systems.

  • Ethernet passive optical network(EPON) is the next-generation technology for supporting services of high-quality at low-cost. In the EPON, all optical network units(ONUs) have to share a limited uplink channel for upstream data. In order to satisfy bandwidth demands of users on high-capacity local access networks(LANs), the optical line terminal(OLT) efficiently divides and allocates time slots of uplink channel to all ONUs. We discuss previous schemes for dynamic bandwidth allocation(DBA), such as interleaved polling with adaptive cycle time(IPACT) and sliding cycle time(SLICT). In this paper, dynamic right sizing of maximum-windows(DRSM), as a novel bandwidth allocation service, is proposed for more effective and efficient time slot allocation of the uplink channel. DRSM which is based on past information of bandwidth allocated by OLT calculates maximum available bandwidth and dynamically alters the maximum window size for the next ONU. This scheme does not only exert every effort to meet bandwidth demands of ONUs with the possible scope, it also seeks fairness of bandwidth allocation among ONUs.

  • The need for broadband wireless data networks such as IEEE 802.16e WiMAX systems increases as a variety of wireless information devices like smart phones are adopted rapidly in everyday life. Since most of mobile applications employ TCP as their transport layer protocol, the performance improvement of TCP in WiMAX systems is crucial. This paper proposes an efficient method to transmit uplink piggyback ACK packets by exploiting the uplink packet buffering which happens because of the resource allocation scheme of the WiMAX systems. The proposed method can support not only the ACK filtering but also the merging of the piggyback ACK packets. As a result, the bandwidth reduction in the piggyback ACK packet transmission leads to the improvement of the downlink throughput. The simulation results show that the bandwidth for the ACK packets reduces more than 90%, and the downlink throughput increases at least 30%.

  • In recent years, OFDMA(orthogonal frequency division multiple access) and SC-FDMA(Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access) have been widely studied for the uplink of a mobile communication system. In this paper, PAPR(Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) and BER(Bit Error Rate) performance of the OFDMA and SC-FDMA systems are studied in relation to the uplink of a mobile communication system. Three kinds of sub-carrier allocation methods in the OFDMA system and 2 kinds of sub-carrier allocation methods in SC-FDMA system are suggested to compare and improve system performance. Simulation results show that in the OFDMA system, the first sub-band allocation method has better PAPR reduction performance than the other methods. In the SC-FDMA system, the distributed allocation method offers similar P APR, compared with the sub-band allocation method. P APR can be further reduced by adding a spectrum shaping filter with an appropriate roll of factor. Furthermore, it is found that on average, SC-FDMA can reduce the PAPR by more than 5 dB compared to OFDMA, when the total sub-carrier number is 1,024 and the sub-carrier number allocated to each user changes trom 8 to 512. Because of the frequency diversity and low PAPR characteristics, SC-FDMA system of the distributed sub-carrier allocation method can achieve better BER performance than the OFDMA system.

  • Recently, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) have been received considerable attention to be involved in the next generation mobile system. However, there are inherent inter-user interferences caused by the multiplexing multiple users in the same communication resource in NOMA systems. Two representative methods, the approximate white noise and random variable methods, have been adapted for the analysis of interferences in NOMA systems. In this paper, we derive the outage probabilities of an uplink NOMA system with the two analysis methods and compare the results. The numerical results of the outage probabilities versus transmitted power, distances, and power allocation are compared. We noticed that the derived functions are different each other, but the numerical results are coincident. It is shown that the two interference analysis methods can be applied to the analysis of NOMA systems.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of the encoding and the modulation processes in the downlink and uplink of the EPCglobal Gen-2 system through the analysis and simulation. Furthermore, the synchronization issues on time and frequency domain and the preamble architecture are evaluated. By incorporating the encoding and the modulation technigue in the downlink and uplink, we assess the performance of the EPCglobal Gen-2 system. We also introduce the encoding and backscatter modulation process as well as the BER performance of FM0 code. In addition, the importance and the role of the frequency and time synchronization, such as the preamble and frame synchronization are explained. Through the simulation in the uplink on the detection probability through preamble, we find that the detection probability approaches 1 for 13 dB $E_b/N_0$.

  • In orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) uplink environments, asynchronously received signals can cause multiple access interference (MAI). This paper focuses on the performance degradation due to the MAI over frequency-selective fading channels. We first introduce the timing misalignment, which is defined as the relative timing difference between asynchronous timing error of uplink user and reference time of the base station, and analytically derive the MAI using the power delay profile of wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) channel model. Then, the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the average symbol error probability (SEP) are derived. The proposed analytical results are verified through simulations with respect to the region of the timing misalignment and the number of asynchronous users.

  • In ultra dense networks (UDNs), macro user equipments (MUEs) have significant interference from small-cell access points (SAPs) since a number of SAPs are deployed in the coverage of macro base stations of 5G mobile communication systems. In this paper, we propose a dynamic channel assignment scheme to increase the performance of MUEs for the uplink of UDNs even though the number of SAPs is increased. The target of the proposed dynamic channel assignment scheme is that the signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) of MUEs is above a given SINR threshold assigning different subchannels to SUEs from those of MUEs. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamic channel assignment scheme outperforms others in terms of the mean MUE capacity even though the mean SUE capacity is decreased a little lower.
