Properties of Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Adhesives with Different Formaldehyde to Urea Mole Ratios

  • As a part of abating the formaldehyde emission of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesive by lowering formaldehyde to urea (F/U) mole ratio, this study was conducted to investigate properties of UF resin adhesive with different F/U mole ratios. UF resin adhesives were synthesized at different F/U mole ratios of 1.6, 1.4, 1.2, and 1.0. Properties of UF resin adhesives measured were non-volatile solids content, pH level, viscosity, water tolerance, specific gravity, gel time and free formaldehyde content. In addition, a linear relationship between non-volatile solids content and sucrose concentration measured by a refractometer was established for a faster determination of the non-volatile solids content of UF resin. As F/U mole ratio was lowered, non-volatile solids content, pH, specific gravity, water tolerance, and gel time increased while free formaldehyde content and viscosity were decreased. These results suggested that the amount of free formaldehyde strongly affected the reactivity of UF resin. Lowering F/U mole ratio of UF resin as a way of abating formaldehyde emission consequently requires improving its reactivity.

부산지역 외국인 유학생의 대학급식 이용실태 및 급식 품질 속성에 대한 중요도-만족도 조사 (An Evaluation on the Attitudes and Importance-Satisfaction on Service Quality of University Foodservice among International Students in Busan)

  • Objectives: This study examined the usage status and the degree of satisfaction of university foodservice (UF) perceived by international students in Busan. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on the utilization of UF, improvement requirements, preference type and recipe, as well as the importance and satisfaction of UF quality attributes as perceived by international students (n=604) at universities in the Busan area between April and June 2017. Results: UF was 'generally satisfied' or 'very satisfied' in about 35.4% of the study population, and 'not very satisfied' or 'not satisfied at all' in approximately 11.5%. Approximately 21.7% said that UF contributed to dietary life 'very much' or 'quite significantly' and 36.4% said 'not very much' or 'not at all'. The largest demand for improvement of UF was 'variety of menu' (52.0%). The most leftover food in UF was kimchi (30.3%) and broth/stew (19.2%), and the major reason for having leftover was 'not to one's taste' (27.8%). After dividing the foodservice quality attributes into 5 factors - food quality and price, sanitation, convenience, physical environment, and service environment - and analyzing the importance and satisfaction of each factor, it was shown that satisfaction was generally lower than the degree of importance. Sanitation factor was high for both importance and satisfaction of UF, while convenience factor was high for the importance but low for satisfaction of UF. Four variables in the food quality and price factor ('food taste', 'freshness of food', 'nutritive value of food', and 'reasonable price') and 3 variables in the convenience factor ('variety of menu', 'prompt food service', and 'display of the meals for the day') had high importance but low satisfaction, showing the need for an improvement on these areas. Conclusions: Based on the study results, it is necessary to improve the food quality, as well as the price and convenience factors, and to provide various menus to increase the satisfaction of UF in international students.

Alcohol Production from Whey in Batch and Continuous Culture of Kluyveromyces fragilis.

  • In order to develop the whey beverage, we examined the optimum conditions for alcohol fermentation by Kluyveromyces tragilis ATCC 46537. The optimum conditions for alcohol production by K. fragilis ATCC 46537 were as follows; pH 4.5, $30^{\cir}C$, with a supplement of 50 g/l of lactose. To develop a continuous production of alcohol from whey, we compared batch fermentation with continuous iermentation in conjunction with UF system. Batch fermentation produced 11.0 g/l of alcohol, whereas pseudocontinuous and continuous fermentation with UF system produced 8.5 g/l of alcohol. To increase the alcohol production, we added 50 g/l of lactose to both fermentations. Batch fermentation with lactose supplement produced 15.7 g/l of alcohol and continuous fermentation with lactose supplement in conjunction with UF system produced 15.0 g/l of alcohol. These results clearly demonstrate that the UF system can be used to increase the alcohol production from whey, supplemented with exogenous lactose.

Effect of Analytical Parameters of Gel Permeation Chromatography on Molecular Weight Measurements of Urea-Formaldehyde Resins

  • As the molecular weight (MW) of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins had a great impact on their properties, this work was conducted to study effect of analytical parameters of gel permeation chromatography (GPC) on the MW measurement of UF resins. GPC parameters such as flow rate, column, detector temperature, and sample injection temperature were selected to compare number-average molecular weight (Mn), weight-average molecular weight (Mw), molecular weight distribution (MWD) and polydispersity index (PDI) of two UF resins with different viscosities. As expected, UF resin with higher viscosity resulted in greater Mn and Mw than those of low viscosity UF resin. When the flow rate increased, both Mn and Mw of UF resins decreased and MWD became narrower. By contrast, both Mn and Mw increased and MWD became wide when the column, detector, and sample injection temperature increased. The column, detector, and sample injection temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ at a flow rate of $0.5m{\ell}/min$ resulted in the highest MW and broadest MWD for the GPC analysis. These results suggest that the apparent molecular size or a hydrodynamic radius of UF resin molecules dissolved in the mobile phase affect to Mn, Mw and MWD.

침지형 한외여과 막공법과 역삼투 공법을 이용한 하.폐수처리 (Wastewater Treatment Using Ultrafiltration (UF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) Process)

  • 세계적인 물부족을 해결하는 대안 중의 하나는 하수 재이용이다. 본 연구는 A시의 하수를 UF와 RO 공법으로 처리하여 인근지역의 공업용수로 재사용이 가능한지의 여부를 확인하고자 하였다. A시의 하수를 UF와 RO로 처리한 결과 Na, Mg, Cl, Ca, Mn, $PO_4$, $SO_4$ 등은 원수 대비 97% 이상의 높은 처리 효율을 보였으나, $NH_4$-N, TN, $NO_3$-N, BOD등의 영양염류는 각각 35.71%, 85.21%, 87.05% 그리고 56%로 상대적으로 낮은 제거율을 보였다. 그러나 영양염류는 원수 자체의 함유량이 소량 이여서 하수 처리수 공업용수 재이용수질 권고 기준을 만족하는데 문제가 없었다. 그 외의 측정항목 또한 하수 처리수 공업용수 재이용수질 권고 기준을 만족하여 인근지역의 공업용수로 재사용에는 문제가 없을 것으로 예상된다.

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of umbelliferone in chronic alcohol-fed rats

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Inflammation is associated with various types of acute and chronic alcohol liver diseases. In this study, we examined whether umbelliferone (7-hydroxycoumarin, UF) ameliorates chronic alcohol-induced liver damage by modulating inflammatory response and the antioxidant system. METHODS: Rats were fed a Liber-Decarli liquid diet containing 5% alcohol with or without UF (0.05 g/L) for 8 weeks, while normal rats received an isocaloric carbohydrate liquid diet. RESULTS: Chronic alcohol intake significantly increased serum tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$) and interleukin 6 levels and decreased interleukin 10 level; however, UF supplementation reversed the cytokines related to liver damage. UF significantly suppressed hepatic lipopolysaccharide binding protein, toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), nuclear factor kappa B, and TNF-${\alpha}$ gene expression increases in response to chronic alcohol intake. Masson's trichrome staining revealed that UF improved mild hepatic fibrosis caused by alcohol, and UF also significantly increased the mRNA expressions and activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in liver, and thus, decreased lipid peroxide and mitochondrial hydrogen peroxide levels. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate that UF protects against alcohol-induced liver damage by inhibiting the TLR4 signaling pathway and activating the antioxidant system.

Sysmex UF-5000 소변 유세포분석기를 이용한 요배양 불필요 검체의 선별 (Selection of Unnecessary Urine Culture Specimens Using Sysmex UF-5000 Urine Flow Cytometer)

  • 배경: 요배양검사는 요로감염 진단을 위한 표준검사로 가장 흔히 의뢰되는 미생물 배양 검사 중 하나이다. 소변 자동분석기는 감염과 관련된 많은 정보를 제공한다. 최근 개발된 Sysmex UF-5000 (Sysmex, Japan)은 유세포분석 방법에 의해 세균, 효모균, 백혈구 등의 입자를 정량적으로 측정하고, 그람 염색성 정보를 제공한다. 저자들은 UF-5000을 이용하여 불필요한 요배양검사를 얼마나 선별할 수 있는지 평가하였다. 방법: 요배양검사가 의뢰된 453 검체 중 비뇨기과/신장내과 의뢰 검체를 제외한 126 검체를 대상으로 요시험지봉검사와 UF-5000으로 검사를 시행하여 요배양검사 결과와 비교하였다. 소변 배양은 집락수가 $10^4CFU/mL$ 이상인 경우 양성으로 판정하였다. 결과: UF-5000의 세균 수 $50/{\mu}L$이하, 효모양 세포 $100/{\mu}L$ 이하를 기준으로 했을 때 분석 대상 요배양의 38.1% (48/126), 전체 요배양 453건의 10.6%를 불필요한 요배양검사로 선별해 낼 수 있었다. 결론: UF-5000에서 산출된 세균 및 효모양 세포의 수로 음성 배양 결과를 예측할 수 있으며 약 10%의 불필요한 배양검사를 줄일 수 있다.

유채박 단백질의 추출 및 정제에 관한 연구 (Extraction and Purification of Rapeseed Protein)

  • 유채박 단백질의 효과적인 추출 및 정제공정을 확립하기 위하여 추출용매를 비교했으며, 1% SHMP 용매로 추출한 후 등전침전, 산세척, UF농축 처리에 의하여 정제한 단백질의 수율 및 glucosinolate와 phytate 잔존량을 조사하였다. 추출조건은 1% SHMP(pH 8.0) 용매가 가장 적당하였으며, glucosinolate 및 phytate 제거를 위한 정제효과 면에서는 2회 산세척시와 1회 산세척 및 UF(100K) 농축 처리한 공정이 가장 효과적 이었다. 수율과 단백질 함량은 2회 산세척의 경우는 37.1% 및 75.3%이었으며, 1회 산세척과 UF(100K) 농축의 경우는 42.1% 및 72.4%였다. 따라서 glucosinolate와 phytate 제거효과와 단백질의 수율면을 고려한 결과 가장 효과적인 정제공정은 등전침전${\rightarrow}$1회 산세척(pH 3.5)${\rightarrow}$중화(pH 7.5)${\rightarrow}$ UF(100K) 농축 처리하는 방법이다.

한외여과에 의해 제조된 참깨박 농축단백질의 기능적 특성 (Functional Properties of Sesame Protein Concentrates Produced by Ultrafiltration)

  • The functional properties of sesame protein concentrate(SPC) using different size of ultrafiltration(UF) membranes were examined and compared with those of conventional acid-precipitated sesame protein concentrate. The protein contents of SPC by UF with molecular size of 10K, 30K and look dalton membranes were 84.2%, 82.7%, and 76.4%, respectively, and that of acid-precipitated SPC was 88.7%. The nitrogen solubility of SPC by UF was higher than that of conventional SPC at various pH levels. Especially, it showed three-fold increase at near isoelectric point. However, water absorption capacity and fat absorption capacity of SPC by UF were decreased. For emulsion and foam properties, there were no significant differences between SPC by acid precipitation and SPC by UF method. At various pH levels, SPC by membrane with pore size of 30K dalton showed the highest emulsion properties. The SPC by UF had slightly higher viscosity than defatted sesame flour and SPC by acid precipitation.

콩기름 이용을 위한 지방산-글리세롤-pMDI와 요소수지 혼용 접착제가 접착성능에 미치는 영향- (Effects of Blending Fatty Acid-Glycerol-pMDI with Urea-Formaldehyde Resin Adhesives to Their Adhesion for the Use of Soybean Oil)

  • 본 연구는 UF resin의 접착성능을 개선하여 그 사용처의 확대하기 위하여 각 F/U 몰비별로 제조된 UF resin에 접착성능이 우수한 지방산-글리세롤-pMDI 당량비 1:1:4인 비교적 저가의 isocyanate prepolymer접착제를 선정하여 UF resin의 수지고형분 기준으로 0 wt%(대조구), 2 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, 25 wt%, 50 wt%로 첨가 혼합하여 접착 성능을 조사하였다. 그 결과, 상태 접착력(Type 2)은 F/U 몰비 1.4에서 가장 우수한 접착력을 준내수 접착력(Type 1.5)은 FGMDI첨가량이 25% 이상에서 KS 합판 접착성 기준인 $7.5kgf/cm^2$를 모두 상회하는 $11kgf/cm^2$ 이상을 나타내었다. 상태접착력대비 준내수 접착력의 평균 감소율은 F/U 몰비가 높아질수록, 지방산-글리세롤-pMDI접착제의 첨가량이 많아질수록 그 감소의 폭이 둔화되었다.
