UBVI CCD Photometry of the Globular Cluster M30 (구상성단 M30의 UBVI CCD 측광연구)

  • We present CCD UBVI photometry for more than 10,000 stars in $20'.5{\times}20'.5$ field of the halo globular cluster M30. From a color-magnitude diagram, main sequence turnoff was obtained when $V_{TO},\;(B-V)_{TO},\;and\;(V-I)_{TO}\;are\;8.63{\pm}0.05,\;0.44{\pm}0.05\;and\;0.63{\pm}0.05$, respectively. From a (U-B)-(B-V) diagram, reddening parameter, E(B-V) equals $0.05{\pm}0.01$ and a UV color excess ${\delta}(U-B)\;is\;0.27{\pm}0.01$. The abundance is derived, where [Fe/H] equals $-2.05{\pm}0.09$ according to the photometric method and spectroscopic data. The observed luminosity function of M30 shows an excess in the number of red giants relative to the number of turnoff stars, when comparing with the predictions of canonical models. Using the Hipparcos parallaxes for subdwarfs, we estimate distance modulus, $(m-M)_o\;as\;14.75{\pm}0.12$. Using the R and R' method, we find helium abundances, Y(R) as $0.23{\pm}0.02$, Y(R') as $0.29{\pm}0.02$, respectively. Finally, the cluster' sage dispersion was deduced from 10.71 Gyr to 17 Gyr.

  • UBVI CCD photometry has been obtained for a region around the Wolf-Rayet star WR 12. We found two young stellar associations in the observed field: the nearer one comprises the field members of Vela OBI association at d = 1.8kpc, while the farther one is the young open cluster Bochum 7 (Bo 7) at d = 4.8kpc. The stars associated with Bo 7 showed no central concentration which suggests that Bo 7 is not a young open cluster but simply a local concentration in the density of young stars belonging to the OB association (Vel OB3). These two associations have similar ages but remarkably different mass function slopes ($\Gamma$ = -2.1 $\pm$ 0.3 for Vel OBI and -1.0 $\pm$ 0.3 for Bo 7). The stars in Vel OBI shows an evident age spread (${\Delta}T\~ 9Myr$). We also found two strong H$\alpha$ emission stars - WR 12 and $\sharp$1066 - from narrow band H$\alpha$ photometry.

  • Open clusters are useful tools to investigate the structure and evolution of the Galactic disk. We have started a long-term project to obtain UBVI CCD photometry of open clusters which were little studied before, using the Doyak 1.8 m telescope of Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea. The primary goals of this project are (1) to make a catalog of UBVI photometry of open clusters, (2) to make an atlas of open clusters, and (3) to survey and monitor variable stars in open clusters. Here we describe this project and report the first results based on preliminary analysis of the data on four open clusters in the survey sample: Be 14, Cr 74, Biu 9, and NGC 2355. Isochrone fitting of the color-magnitude diagrams of the clusters shows that all of them are intermediate age to old (0.3-1.6 Gyrs) open clusters with moderate metallicity.

STELLAR CONTENTS AND GLOBULAR CLUSTER CANDIDATES IN THE SCULPTOR GROUP GALAXY NGC 300

  • We present UBVI CCD photometry of the stellar contents and globular cluster(GC) candidates in the spiral galaxy NGC 300 in the Sculptor group. Color-magnitude diagrams for 18 OB associations having more than 30 member stars are presented. The slope of the initial mass function for the bright stars in NGC 300 is estimated to be ${\Gamma}= -2.6{\pm} 0.3$. Assuming the distance to NGC 300 of (m - M)o = 26.53 $\pm$ 0.07, the mean absolute magnitude of three brightest blue stars is obtained to be < $M_v^{BSG}$ (3) > = -8.95 mag. We have performed search for GCs in NGC 300 and have found 17 GC candidates in this galaxy. Some characteristics of these GC candidates are discussed.

NO OPEN CLUSTER IN THE RUPRECHT 93 REGION

  • UBVI CCD photometry is obtained for the Ruprecht 93 (Ru 93)region. We are unable to confirm the existence of an intermediate-age open cluster in Ru 93 from the spatial distribution of blue stars. On the other hand, we find two young star groups in the observed field: the nearer one (Ru 93 group) comprises the field young stars in the Sgr-Car arm at $d{\approx}2.1$ kpc, while the farther one (WR 37 group) is the young stars around WR 37 at $d{\approx}4.8$ kpc. We derive an abnormal extinction law ($R_V$ = 3.5) in the Ruprecht 93 region.

  • 오리온 성운은 지구와 매우 가까이에 있고, 무거운 별이 포함된 성단과 성운이 밀접하게 연관되어 있어, 오리온 성운 성단은 가장 많이 연구된 천체 중 하나이다. 1993년 HST를 이용한 오리온 성운 성단의 관측으로 나이가 어린별을 둘러싼 물질의 실루엣을 처음으로 보았다. 이후 이러한 천체를 원시행성계원반(protoplanetary disk, Proplyd)이라 불렀으며, 그 형태와 구조, 물리적 과정에 대해 꾸준히 연구가 진행되고 있다. 이 연구에서는 지상관측에서 얻은 UBVI 및 Ha 측광 자료와 원시행성계원반을 상호 동정하고, 원시행성계원반의 형태학적 특징과 측광인자의 관련성을 조사하였다. 또한 Spitzer 중적외선 자료와 Natta et al.(2004)의 근적외선 자료를 통합하여, 현재 사용되고 있는 자외선 초과와 근적외선 방출선을 이용한 질량 강착률 등의 해석에서 주의해야 할 천체들이 있다는 것을 발견했다.

대.소 마젤란은하의 측광탐사관측

  • 대 소 마젤란은하는 항성진화 및 은하진화를 연구할 수 있는 가장 중요한 실험실이다. 두 은하는 우리은하에 매우 가깝고, 각크기가 매우 크기 때문에 이들 두 은하에 대한 측광학적 연구는 매우 지엽적이고 단편적으로 이루어졌다. 시상이 매우 좋은 KMTNet의 1호기 (칠레)를 사용하여 대마젤란은하 ($10^{\circ}{\times}10^{\circ}$)와 소마젤란은하 ($5^{\circ}{\times}5^{\circ}$) 영역에 대한 UBVI 및 협대역 $H{\alpha}$, [OIII] $5007{\AA}$ 측광 탐사관측을 통해 다음과 같은 연구를 제안한다. 1. $V{\approx}23$ 등급까지 대 소 마젤란은하 천체들의 측광 자료의 제공 2. 거리를 지시할 수 있는 천체들의 공간적 분포를 통해 3차원 구조 연구 3. 협대역 $H{\alpha}$ 측광을 통해 Herbig Ae/Be 천체들의 분포와 별 탄생 연구 4. 협대역 $H{\alpha}$ 및 O[III] 측광을 통해 행성상성운의 분포와 광도함수 연구 5. 색-등급도 연구를 통해 위치에 따른 별 탄생의 역사 연구 6. 어두운 별들의 공간적 분포를 통해 LMC-SMC, LMC-MWG, SMC-MWG의 상호작용 연구.
