Burst Pressure Evaluation for Through-Wall Cracked Tubes in the Steam Generator (관통균열이 존재하는 증기발생기 전열관의 파열압력 평가)

  • Operating experience of steam generators shows that the tubes are degraded by stress corrosion cracking, fretting wear and so on. These defected tubes could stay in service if it is proved that the tubes have sufficient structural margin to preclude the risk of tube bursting. This paper provides detailed plastic limit pressure solutions for through-wall cracks in the steam generator tubes. These are developed based on three dimensional(3D) finite element analyses assuming elastic-perfectly plastic material behavior. Both axial and circumferential through-wall cracks in free span and in u-bend regions are considered. The resulting limit pressure solutions are given in a polynomial form, and thus can be simply used in practical integrity assessment of the steam generator tubes.

Simulations of fluidelastic forces and fretting wear in U-bend tube bundles of steam generators: Effect of tube-support conditions

  • The structural integrity of tube bundles represents a major concern when dealing with high risk industries, such as nuclear steam generators, where the rupture of a tube or tubes will lead to the undesired mixing of the primary and secondary fluids. Flow-induced vibration is one of the major concerns that could compromise the structural integrity. The vibration is caused by fluid flow excitation. While there are several excitation mechanisms that could contribute to these vibrations, fluidelastic instability is generally regarded as the most severe. When this mechanism prevails, it could cause serious damage to tube arrays in a very short period of time. The tubes are therefore stiffened by means of supports to avoid these vibrations. To accommodate the thermal expansion of the tube, as well as to facilitate the installation of these tube bundles, clearances are allowed between the tubes and their supports. Progressive tube wear and chemical cleaning gradually increases the clearances between the tubes and their supports, which can lead to more frequent and severe tube/support impact and rubbing. These increased impacts can lead to tube damage due to fatigue and/or wear at the support locations. This paper presents simulations of a loosely supported multi-span U-bend tube subjected to turbulence and fluidelastic instability forces. The mathematical model for the loosely-supported tubes and the fluidelastic instability model is presented. The model is then utilized to simulate the nonlinear response of a U-bend tube with flat bar supports subjected to cross-flow. The effect of the support clearance as well as the support offset are investigated. Special attention is given to the tube/support interaction parameters that affect wear, such as impact and normal work rate.

Effect of refrigeration lubricants on the heat transfer performance in the microfin tube evaporator (마이크로핀관 증발기내 전열 성능에 미치는 냉동기유의 영향)

  • The present study experimentally investigated the effect of refrigeration lubricant on the heat transfer performance in the straight sections and U-bend of a microfin tube evaporator by using R-22/mineral oil and R-407C/POE oil. The apparatus consisted of test section with U-bend, preheater, condenser, oil injection and sampling devices, magnetic pump, mass flow meter etc. The experimental parameters were oil concentration of 0 to 5 wt%, inlet quality of 0.1 to 0.5, mass flux of 219 and $400kg/m^2s$ and heat flux of 10 and $20kW/m^2$. The effects of parameters on the heat transfer coefficients were large in the order of inlet quality, mass flux and heat flux as oil concentration got increased. As oil concentration was increased, heat transfer coefficients were continuously decreased for R-22 and increased by 3% up to the concentration of 1% and then decreased for R-407C under the condition of large inlet quality, and small mass flux and heat flux. But, the heat transfer coefficients were increased up to the concentration of 3% and then decreased for both R-22 and R-407C refrigerants under the opposite conditions. The variation of enhancement factors for R-407C was under 50% of that for R-22 and the variation with respect to the positions in the test section was small. The pressure drops were increased for both R-22 and R-407C refrigerants as oil concentration was increased. The pressure drops for R-407C were smaller by the maximum of 18% than those for R-22.

The Day of the Week Effect in Chinese Stock Market

  • This study investigates daily stock market anomalies in Chinese stock market, using nine most representative stock indices over an eleven year time period spanning from pre-financial crisis era to six years into the financial crisis. This research is the first to test the presence of the day of the week effect on stock returns in the Chinese stock exchanges during the financial crisis. We find that the day of week effects have been strongly significant in Chinese stock exchanges since 2004. However, unlike the previously found negative Monday effect and positive Friday effect in the U.S., Chinese stock market shows positive returns on Mondays and negative returns on Tuesdays. More importantly, the negative Tuesday effect is only significant after the inception of financial crisis. The results indicate a positive effect on Mondays and a negative effect on Thursdays. More importantly, we find a negative Tuesday effect during the financial crisis, which suggests a spillover of the Monday effect from the U.S. stock market. Our results shed some light on the degree of market efficiency in the largest emerging capital market in the world, and its increasingly close relationship with the U.S. capital market.

RELAP5 Analysis of a Condensation Experiment in an Inverted U-tube

  • Two-phase transient phenomena in the noncondensable gas-filled closed loop was investigated numerically using the RELAP5/MOD3 version 3.1 computer code. The condensation heat transfer correlation for noncondensable gases was studied in detail. Two modes of the reflux condensation which can be characterized by countercurrent flow of steam and its condensed water and the oscillatory between reflux condensation and natural circulation were predicted well. However, the natural circulation mode which the condensed water carried over the U-bend concurrently with steam was failed to predict.

  • This paper deals with the springback characteristics of cold rolled sheet steel through the use of the V-bending process and U-bending one. The influence of material properties on the springback of forming processes was investigated. In the V-bending process there was an optimum bend radius for each combination of parameters which produced minimal springback. In the U-bending process the blank holder force can control the degree of springback. A high blank holding force resulted in a uniform strain distribution and reduced the level of springback.

  • Flow fields inside feeder pipes have been simulated numerically using a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code to calculate the shear stress distribution, which is the most important factor in predicting the local regions of feeder pipes highly susceptible to FAC (flow-accelerated corrosion)-induced wall thinning. The CFD approach, with schemes used in this study, to simulate the flow situations inside the CANDU feeder pipes has been verified as it showed a good agreement between the investigation results for the failed feedwater pipe at Surry unit 2 plant in the U.S. and the CFD calculation. Sensitivity studies of the three geometrical parameters, such as angle of the first and second bends, length of the first span between the grayloc hub and the first bend, and length of the second span between the first and the second bends have been performed. CFD analysis reveals that the local regions of feeder pipes of Wolsung unit 1 in Korea, on which wall thickness measurements have been performed so far, are not coincident with the worst regions predicted by the present CFD analysis located in the connection region of straight and bend pipe near the inlet part of the bend intrados. Finally, based on the results of the present CFD analysis, a guide to the selection of the weakest local positions where the measurement of wall thickness should be performed with higher priority has been provided.

  • Steam generator tubes are critical boundary of the primary and secondary side in nuclear power plants. Eddy current testing is commonly used as the method of non-destructive testing for the safety and integrity of steam generator tubes in the nuclear power plants. Changes in the geometric shape act as a stress concentration factor likely to cause a defect during the steam generator operation. The mixed-signals with the geometric shape are distorted and attributes that are difficult to detect signals. An example is bending stress due to compression process at a U-bend occurring in the intrados region which has a small radius of curvature. The resulting change in the geometric shape may lead to a dent like occurrences. The dent can cause stress concentration and generates stress corrosion cracks. In this study, the steam generator tubes of nuclear power plant were selected to study for analysis of mixed-signal containing dent and stress corrosion cracks.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the manufacturing technique on the U type Draw-Bending of inner grooved tube. This bending process make the U shape tube by Hair Pin Bending machine. The U type tube requires the quality of product that satisfy sufficient conditions for a heat exchanger. The mandrel components act the important roles that prevent wrinkles and keep the shape of cross section of bended tube at bending process. We performed the FEM simulation using LS-DYNA software and the bending test of inner groove tube and then, compared bending simulation with bending test results about mandrel ball diameter, mandrel position and optimal clearance between mandrel and tube.

A Study on the Scour Depth Equation in Bight River (하천 만곡부에서의 세굴심 산정식에 관한 연구)

  • Currently, we only estimate the average flood water level by the cross-sections of the river using one-dimensional numerical analysis when establishing the basic plans. However, the reliability decreases when it comes to the river bend. In river bend, the difference of water-level between the inside and the outside of the river arises by centrifugal force. And it is estimated less than what it could be estimated when establishing the plan with average estimate of flood level. It is apprehended that the exterior of the river will be under-constructed when establishing the scour depth only with the mean depth. In the case of local scour of the abutment, it is difficult to estimate its depth precisely, and it tends to be over-estimated in the case of the empirical formulas. Therefore, the modification considering the deviation of the water depth of the exterior of the river bend is needed. In observing the deviation of each formula in river bend, it is found: Andru's formula for 58%, followed by the Laursen's for 26%, and the C.S.U's for 17% in pier, while it is 44% for Froehlich's formula in abutment. Under the 500CMS of the flood discharge, the deviation of the scour depth between pier and abutment was about 10 %. However, in further flood discharge, it shows 24~58% the biggest in deviation of piers. It is concluded that the scour depth estimate should be done with 2-dimensional numerical analysis.
