  • A "granite boulder", ~70 cm in size, was reported from the Geumgang Limestone, and has been considered as a glaciogenic dropstone. Since this interpretation has enormous implications for unraveling the evolution history of the Ogcheon Metamorphic Belt, we re-examined the contact relationship and structure of the "granite boulder", and estimated its emplacement age based upon SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating. The weighted mean $^{206}Pb/^{238}U$ age pooled from 6 spot analyses of two specimens is $170{\pm}2Ma$ ($2{\sigma}$, MSWD=2.2). This zircon age suggests that the "granite boulder" in the Geumgang Limestone is a part of Jurassic granite, rather than a glaciogenic dropstone.

  • The Korean Prototype Gen-IV sodium-cooled fast reactor (PGSFR) is supposed to be loaded with a relatively-costly low-enriched U fuel, while its envisaged transuranic fuels are not available for transmutation. In this work, the U-enrichment reduction by improving the neutron economy is pursued to save the fuel cost. To improve the neutron economy of the core, a new reflector material, PbO, has been introduced to replace the conventional HT9 reflector in the current PGSFR core. Two types of PbO reflectors are considered: one is the conventional pin-type and the other one is an inverted configuration. The inverted PbO reflector design is intended to maximize the PbO volume fraction in the reflector assembly. In addition, the core radial configuration is also modified to maximize the performance of the PbO reflector. For the baseline PGSFR core with several reflector options, the U enrichment requirement has been analyzed and the fuel depletion analysis is performed to derive the equilibrium cycle parameters. The linear reactivity model is used to determine the equilibrium cycle performances of the core. Impacts of the new PbO reflectors are characterized in terms of the cycle length, neutron leakage, radial power distribution, and operational fuel cost.

  • We carried out the U-Pb age dating of zircon from basement rocks in the southern part of the Danyang National Geopark. Two migmatitic gneisses composed of biotite±sillimanite±garnet+feldspar+quartz were dated. Leucosomes in the samples were clearly distinguished from their melanosomes. The U-Pb isotopic compositions of zircon from sillimanite- and garnet-bearing migmatitic samples were measured using a secondary ion microprobe, yielding metamorphic ages, 1870±10 Ma (2σ)와 1863±6 Ma (2σ), respectively. 1.87~1.86 Ga metamorphic ages are consistent with those of the Paleoproterozoic low-P and high-T regional metamorphism (1.87~1.85 Ga) in the Yeongnam Massif. The maximum depositional age based upon the apparent 207Pb/206Pb ages of detrital zircon in the samples was estimated as 2.06 Ga, and thus sedimentation age of the protolith of the migmatitic gneisses ranges between 2.06 and 1.87 Ga.

  • This study used the petrological features and the whole rock susceptibility characteristics suggest ways to determine the domestic dimension stones and Chinese similar dimension stones. In addition, this study compare the intrusive period by measuring the zircon U-Pb age of these stones. Result of comparing the petrological feature, with the exception of Macheon stone and Boryeong stone to show the differences in mineral composition and texture under a microscope, the domestic dimension stones and Chinese similar dimension stones exhibit substantially the same petrological feature. According to the measurement results for the whole rock magnetic susceptibility, Goheong, Iksan, Pocheon stones are the similar as Chinese dimension stones, and other stones are easily distinguished. The zircon U-Pb age results for Geochang, Iksan, and Pocheon stones are equivalent to the Jurassic Daebo granites and G603, G633, G655 are the Cretaceous granites. Therefore, the domestic dimension stones and Chinese similar dimension stones can be clearly determined by the zircon U-Pb age results.

  • It is well known that the Hongcheon iron-rare earth deposit is composed of carbonatite-phoscorite complex. We conducted zircon U-Pb age determination for the gneissic country rocks of this deposit. As the result we obtained ca. 1830 Ma, which is somewhat younger than igneous and metamorphic ages of ca. 1870 Ma generally reported from the Gyeonggi massif, suggesting further investigations for the timing and evolution of the Paleoproterozoic activities of the Gyeonggi massif.

  • U-Pb ages were determined from the Yongyudo biotite granites from western parts of Gyeonggi massif. The results show that the emplacement age of the Yongyudo biotite granite is ca. 227-230 Ma. Such age result that is somewhat older than previous reported ages, suggesting further investigations for the timing and evolution of the Jurassic granites of the western Gyeonggi massif.

  • The geology of Saok island area in Jeollanam-do can be divided into 4 lithologic types: Jurassic granite, Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, acidic tuff and acidic dikes. In the Saok island area, dinosaur and web-footed bird footprints, arthropod trackway and silicified wood were found recently in the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks which composed of alternating light grey sandstone, shale and mudrock. The fossil-bearing sedimentary rock is overlain by an acidic tuff, and the sedimentary rock and acidic tuff are cut by acidic dykes. In order to constrain the depositional age of the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in Saok island area, SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages were determined in the tuffaceous sandstone and overlying acidic tuff. Zircon U-Pb ages of the sandstone and tuff are $83.58{\pm}0.86$ and $79.80{\pm}0.75Ma$, respectively, which belong to the Campanian of the Late Cretaceous. The U-Pb age of the acidic tuff indicates the eruption time of acidic tuff and thus the minimum age of the fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks in this area. Therefore, the formation age of the dinosaur and web-footed bird footprints can be constrained between 83.6 and 79.8 Ma.

  • LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon age was determined from the granite gneiss from Jeungsan-Pyeongwon area located to the west of Pyeongan Basin, North Korea, yielding concordant age of $1,873{\pm}19(2{\sigma})$Ma interpreted as Paleoproterozoic granitic magmatism. Considering relatively precise data reported recently using SHRIMP and LA-ICP-MS, ages around 1,870 Ma have been most frequently reported from Precambrian basement rocks of Korean peninsula, including Yeongnam, Gyeonggi, and Nangnim massifs altogether. Geologic events of this period are interpreted as not only granitic magmatism but also hightemperature regional metamorphism depending on their localities. The magmatic and regional metamorphic events of similar periods have also been reported from neighboring cratons of both North China and South China. Therefore, we need more data and efforts to decipher correlation between Precambrian basements between Korea and China.

  • The volcanic rocks around the Jayang caldera are classified in an order such as Jukjang Volcanics, Doil Rhyolite, Unjusan Tuff and Rhyolite intrusions. By the SHRIMP U-Pb zircon datings from zircons, eruption ages of the Unjusan Tuff are constrained as 66.65±0.96 Ma in the intracaldera, and 66.08±0.62 Ma in the extracaldera outflow, and intrusion age of the ring dike is investigated as 60.74±0.66 Ma. The age data indicate that the caldera was collapsed between 66.08 Ma and 60.74 Ma, just before the dike intruded after the explosive eruption of the Unjusan Tuff. The Jayang caldera shows the composite igneous process of a perfect volcanic cycle passing from ash-flow tuffs through caldera collapse into ring dikes in the Jayang area.

  • The Jipum Volcanics, occurred in western Yeongdeok, are a stratigraphic unit that is composed of rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks, tuffites, andesitic hyaloclastites, rhyolite lavas, tuffaceous conglomerates and andesite lavas. The SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating yielded eruption ages of $68.5{\pm}1.6Ma$ from the rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks. Around the time, the unit was generated by dominant rhyolitic volcanisms and locally added by concomitant andesitc volcanisms from another vents. The rhyolitic volcanisms first produced the pyroclastic rocks by phreatomagmatic explosions from rhyolitic magma, later made of the rhyolite lava dome by lava effusions from reopening of the rhyolitc magma at the existing vent. At the time between first and second rhyolitic volcanisms, the tuffites were deposited at a shallow depression in the distal volcanic edifice, and andesitic volcanisms first made of the hyaloclastites by quench fragmentation when hot andesite lavas flew into the depression to contact with cold water. and the Jipum volcano was finally covered with the thin andesitic lavas by lava effusions from another vent.
