  • Free-path-type guidance system does not need a hardwired path in the environment so that it gives a mobile robot a flexible path. ln this study to achieve the free-path-type guidance system for a mobile robot which is steered by the differential steering of both drive forewheels, position recognition systems are constructed using odometer system as an internal position sensor. Two odometer systems, a auxiliary wheel odometer and a 2-encoder odometer system are constructed and path following algorithms using these odometer systems are designed and experimented. PID control type is adopted in the path following algorithms.

  • Recently, number of navigation system using GPS and other complementary sensors has been developed to offer high-position accuracy. In this paper, an integration of GPS and Dead-Reckoning, which consists of a fiber optical gyroscope and two high-precision wheel-motor encoders for a unmanned navigation system, is presented. The main objective of this integrated GPS/DR unmanned navigation system is to provide accurate position and heading navigation data continuously for autonomous mobile robot. We propose a method for increasing the accuracy of the estimated position of the mobile robot by its DR sensors, high-precision wheel-motor encoders and a fiber optical gyroscope. We used Kalman filter theory to combine GPS and DR measurements. The performance of GPS/DR navigation system is evaluated.

  • This paper presents the development and control of a two wheeled car-like mobile robot using balancing mechanism whose heading control is done by turning the handle. The mobile inverted pendulum is a combined system of a mobile robot and an inverted pendulum system. A sensor fusion technique of low cost sensors such as a gyro sensor and a tilt sensor to measure the balancing angle of the inverted pendulum robot system accurately is implemented. Experimental studies of the trajectory following control task has been conducted by command of steering wheel while balancing.

  • This paper presents a searching method of corresponding points robust to rotational error for scan-matching used for SLAM(Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) in mobile robot. A differential driving mechanism is one of the most popular type for mobile robot. For driving curved path, this type controls the velocities of each two wheels independently. This case increases a wheel slip of the mobile robot more than the case of straight path driving. And this is the reason of a drifting problem. To handle this problem and improves the performance of scan-matching, this paper proposes a searching method of corresponding points using extraction of a closest point based on rotational radius of the mobile robot. To verify the proposed method, the experiment was conducted using LRF(Laser Range Finder). Then the proposed method is compared with an existing method, which is an existing method based on euclidian closest point. The result of our study reflects that the proposed method can improve the performance of searching corresponding points.

  • Accurate kinematic parameters of mobile robots are essential because inaccurate kinematic model produces considerable uncertainties on its odometry and control. Especially, kinematic parameters of caster type mobile robots are important due to their complex kinematic model. Despite the importance of accurate kinematic parameters for caster type mobile robots, few research dealt with the calibration of the kinematic model. Previous study proposed a calibration method that can only calibrate double-wheeled caster type mobile robot and requires direct-measuring of robot center point and distance between casters. This paper proposes a calibration method based on geometric approach that can calibrate single-wheeled caster type mobile robot with two or more casters, does not require direct-measuring, and can successfully acquire all kinematic parameters required for control and odometry. Simulation and hardware experiments conducted in this paper validates the proposed calibration method and shows its performance.

  • Traditional automobile or 2-wheeled robot have limitations on mobility because of their mechanical structure. As traditional automobile is being replaced by electric cars, robot technology is applied to the car industry. In robotics, many researchers worked on omnidirectional mobile robot and produced lots of noticeable results. However in many of the results, specialized wheels such as Mecanum wheels are required. That imposes restrictions on robot speed and outdoor driving. We proposed a 2-wheeled modular robot that has omnidirectional mobility without using specialized wheels. In this paper, we propose a 4-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot that consists of those two modular robots. The proposed robot adopts electric brakes to combine wheel housings and the robot body or to separate wheel housings from the robot body. Two absolute-type encoders and four incremental encoders are used to control the position of the wheel housing and velocities of the wheels. The proposed robot has omnidirectional mobility and can move fast and outdoor with normal tire wheels. We implemented the proposed robot and the feasibility and stability of the robot is verified by two separate experiments.

  • In this paper, we develop a detailed full dynamic model which includes various rough terrains for 6-wheel skid-steering mobile robot based on the real experimental autonomous vehicle called Dog-Horse Robot. We also design a co-simulation for performance comparison of path tracking algorithms. The control architecture in the co-simulation can be divided into two levels. The high level control is the closed-loop control of path tracking to follow a given path, and the low level is concerned about torque control of wheel motion. The simulation using the mechanical data of the Dog-Horse Robot is performed under the Matlab/Simulink environment. We also simulate and evaluate the performance of the model based adaptive controller.

  • In this paper, we identify the isotropic configurations of an omnidirectional mobile robot with three caster wheels, depending on the selection of actuated joints. First, We obtain the kinematic model of a caster wheeled omnidirectional mobile robot(COMR) without matrix inversion. For a given task velocity, the instantaneous motion of each wheel is decomposed into two orthogonal instantaneous motions of the steering and the rotating joints. Second, with the characteristic length introduced, we derive the isotropy conditions of a COMR having $n({\ge}3)$ actuated joints, which are imposed on two Jacobian matrices, $A{\in}R^{n{\times}3}$ and $B{\in}R^{6{\times}6}$. Under the condition of $B{\propto}I_6$, three caster wheels should have identical structure with the length of the steering link equal to the radius of the wheel. Third, depending on the selection of actuated joints, we derive the conditions for $A^t$ $A{\propto}I_3$ and identify the isotropic configurations of a COMR. All possible actuation sets with different number of actuated joints and different combination of rotating and steering joins are considered.
