When the transverse bed slope ($S_t$) in channel bend is more than 0.1, it may produce undesirable results on the bed topography of the cross section. The linear relationship for $S_t$ results in zero or negative flow depths at the shallow $S_t$de of the cross section (i.e., inner bank). The exponential relationship for $S_t$ results in excessive flow depths at the deep side of the cross section (i.e., outer bank). This problem can be solved by combining the best features of both relationships described above. From the study, the linear relationship can be applied for the deep $S_t$de of the cross section. But the exponential relationship is suitable for the shallow side. Therefore, the new relationship of $S_t$ is clarified mathematically. A new mathematical model for bed topography is developed herein which takes accounts of the phase lag and the influence of the width to depth ratio. This model is used to analyze two sets of data: one from laboratory channel and the other from natural channel. A good agreement is found between the observed and the calculated bed topography based on the analysis of two sets of data.
The methods and performance of a pin-level nuclear reactor core thermal-hydraulics (T/H) code ESCOT employing the drift-flux model are presented. This code aims at providing an accurate yet fast core thermal-hydraulics solution capability to high-fidelity multiphysics core analysis systems targeting massively parallel computing platforms. The four equation drift-flux model is adopted for two-phase calculations, and numerical solutions are obtained by applying the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and the Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equation (SIMPLE)-like algorithm in a staggered grid system. Constitutive models involving turbulent mixing, pressure drop, and vapor generation are employed to simulate key phenomena in subchannel-scale analyses. ESCOT is parallelized by a domain decomposition scheme that involves both radial and axial decomposition to enable highly parallelized execution. The ESCOT solutions are validated through the applications to various experiments which include CNEN $4{\times}4$, Weiss et al. two assemblies, PNNL $2{\times}6$, RPI $2{\times}2$ air-water, and PSBT covering single/two-phase and unheated/heated conditions. The parameters of interest for validation include various flow characteristics such as turbulent mixing, spacer grid pressure drop, cross-flow, reverse flow, buoyancy effect, void drift, and bubble generation. For all the validation tests, ESCOT shows good agreements with measured data in the extent comparable to those of other subchannel-scale codes: COBRA-TF, MATRA and/or CUPID. The execution performance is examined with a mini-sized whole core consisting of 89 fuel assemblies and for an OPR1000 core. It turns out that it is about 1.5 times faster than a subchannel code based on the two-fluid three field model and the axial domain decomposition scheme works as well as the radial one yielding a steady-state solution for the OPR1000 core within 30 s with 104 processors.
Trap effect of groove is evaluated in a lubricating system using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The simulation is based on the standard k-ε turbulence model and the discrete phase model (DPM) using a commercial CFD code FLUENT. The simulation results are also capable of showing the particle trajectories in flow field. Computational domain is meshed using the GAMBIT pre-processor. The various grooves are applied in order to improve lubrication characteristics such as reduction of friction loss, increase in load carrying capacity, and trapping of the wear particles. Trap effect of groove is investigated with variations in cross-sectional shape and Reynolds number in this research. Various cross-sectional shapes of groove (rectangular, triangle, U shaped, trapezoid, elliptical shapes) are considered to evaluate the trap effect in simplified two-dimensional sliding bearing. The particles are assumed to steel, and defined a single particle injection condition in various positions. The “reflect” boundary condition for discrete phase is applied to the wall boundary, and the “escape” boundary condition to “pressure inlet” and “pressure outlet” conditions. The streamlines are compared with particles trajectories in the groove. From the results of numerical analysis in the study, it is found that the cross-sectional shapes favorable to the creation of vortex and small eddy current are effective in terms of particle trapping effect. Moreover, it is found that the Reynolds number has a strong influence on the pattern of vortex or small eddy current in the groove, and that the pattern of the vortex or small eddy current affects the trap effect of the groove.

A two-dimensional model for pulse tubes with tapered cross-section was proposed. Net enthalpy flow and steady mass streaming were investigated by two-dimensional analysis of mass, momentum and energy equations of the gas as well as energy conservation of the tube wall. Steady mass flux profiles show good agreement with the previous approximate solution. It was shown that steady mass streaming can be reduced by tapering a pulse tube and by increasing the length of a pulse tube. Effects of the velocity phase angle and frequency on steady mass streaming were shown.

The injection nozzle of an electro-hydraulic injector is being opened and closed by movement of a injector's needle which is balanced by pressure at the nozzle seat and at the needle control chamber, at the opposite end of the needle. In this study, the effects of needle movement in a piezo-driven injector on unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle were investigated by cavitation numerical model based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Aimed at simulating the 3-D two-phase flow behavior, the three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole with real design data of a piezo-driven diesel injector has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. The simulations performed were both fully transient and 'pseudo' steady state, even if under steady state boundary conditions. As this research results, we found that it could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle.

Discrete vortex method was applied for simulating an active control of turbulent leading- edge separation bubble. The leading-edge separation zone was perturbed by a time-dependent sinusoidal perturbation of different frequencies and levels. In order to describe the local sinusoidal perturbation at the separation point, a source pulsation vortex technique was proposed. The present two-dimensional vortex simulations were qualitatively compared with the experimental results for a blunt circular cylinder, where perturbation was introduced along the square-cut leading edge of the cylinder $(Kiya et al.^{(6,7)}).$ It was found that the reattachment length attained a minimum point at low levels of perturbation and two minima at a moderate higher perturbation frequency. The effects of local perturbation on the evolution of leading-edge separation bubble were scrutinized by comparing the perturbed flow with the natural flow. These comparisons were made for the distributions of mean velocity and its velocity fluctuations, intermittency and wall velocity. The motions of instantaneous reattachment in the space-time domain were demonstrated, which were also compared with the experimental findings. In order to investigate the reduction mehanism of reattachment length in the separation bubble, various cross-correlations for velocity and pressure and the relevant convection velocities were evaluated. It was observed that the convection velocity was closely associated with its corresponding pulsationg frequency.
A new advanced safety feature of DVI+ (Direct Vessel Injection Plus) for the APR+ (Advanced Power Reactor Plus), to mitigate the ECC (Emergency Core Cooling) bypass fraction and to prevent switching an ECC outlet to a break flow inlet during a DVI line break, is presented for an advanced DVI system. In the current DVI system, the ECC water injected into the downcomer is easily shifted to the broken cold leg by a high steam cross flow which comes from the intact cold legs during the late reflood phase of a LBLOCA (Large Break Loss Of Coolant Accident)For the new DVI+ system, an ECBD (Emergency Core Barrel Duct) is installed on the outside of a core barrel cylinder. The ECBD has a gap (From the core barrel wall to the ECBD inner wall to the radial direction) of 3/25~7/25 of the downcomer annulus gap. The DVI nozzle and the ECBD are only connected by the ECC water jet, which is called a hydrodynamic water bridge, during the ECC injection period. Otherwise these two components are disconnected from each other without any pipes inside the downcomer. The ECBD is an ECC downward isolation flow sub-channel which protects the ECC water from the high speed steam crossflow in the downcomer annulus during a LOCA event. The injected ECC water flows downward into the lower downcomer through the ECBD without a strong entrainment to a steam cross flow. The outer downcomer annulus of the ECBD is the major steam flow zone coming from the intact cold leg during a LBLOCA. During a DVI line break, the separated DVI nozzle and ECBD have the effect of preventing the level of the cooling water from being lowered in the downcomer due to an inlet-outlet reverse phenomenon at the lowest position of the outlet of the ECBD.
The characteristics of flow past a square cylinder submerged under the free surface have been numerically studied. An immersed boundary method was adopted for implementation of the cylinder cross-section in a Cartesian grid system. Also, a level-set method was used to capture the interface of the two fluids. The case for Reynolds number 150 was examined. At the specific Reynolds number, by varying the gap ratio(0.25, 0.40, 0.55, 0.70, 1.00, 1.50, 2.50, 5.00) the effects of the free surface on the force coefficients and Strouhal number of vortex shedding were identified. The presence of the free surface very close to the cylinder significantly affects the shedding pattern, resulting in considerable deviation of the force coefficients and Strouhal number from those of the single-phase flow. In addition, the influence of Froude number was considered in this study. By increasing Froude number(0.2-0.4), flow topology change was identified at the specific gap ratios(0.40, 0.70, 1.50, 5.00).
A rectangular type circulating fluidized bed (CFB) with an internal nozzle and two partition walls was proposed. In this modified CFB, an internal nozzle and two slanted partition walls were additionally set in the riser. This cold mode apparatus was made of acrylic resin; the riser was 1500mm high and $1000{\times}1000mm^2$ in the cross sectional area, the internal nozzle was 200mm high and 10mm in the inner diameter, and the partition wall was 7mm thick. Glass beads of $91{\mu}m$ in the mean diameter were employed as bed materials. In the cold mode by using the proposed CFB with an internal nozzle, it was possible to change the particle hold up by changing the gas flow ratio of the nozzle to the total(Qn/Qt). It was found that the inflection point which devided the bed structure between the dense and the dilute phase in the riser varied with Qn/Qt.

The breakup length of a liquid jet with flowrate, formed by releasing through a nozzle of circular cross-section into the atmosphere, was experimented and studied for 3 liquid nozzles of varying diameters. The experimental result was analyzed using the existing theoretical equation for predicting the breakup length. It was found that the breakup length of liquid jet depends on the velocity, and the breakup length increases with increasing of the liquid nozzle diameter. Also, the variation range of the breakup length for the same flowrate of liquid increased rapidly as velocity was increased for laminar flow, but in the turbulent flow region, it leveled off in the range of approximately 0.55-0.7 of the mean breakup length. Furthermore, when the longest smooth liquid jet was applied to the co-axial flow air blast atomizer, the effect of air flow on the flow pattern and breakup length was studied for 6 glass nozzles of different lengths and diameters. It was found that depending on the diameter of the mixing tube and liquid jet, it was possible to observe a wide range of flow patterns, such as liquid jet through flow, partial annular flow and annular flow. The liquid jet breakup length was more sensitive to the change in the length rather than the diameter of the mixing tube. As the length of the mixing tube shortens, the breakup length also shortens rapidly.
