Analyzed in this paper is fluid flow in the region near the exhaust and blower ports of the ventilation ducts inside a vehicle tunnel. Theoretical analysis shows that prediction of the energy loss in this region is important for designing the ventilation system. A finite-difference numerical model for the two-dimensional turbulent flow field was used to obtain the flow solution as well as the energy loss. It was shown that the blower-nozzle angle ($\beta$) had an important role in establishing both the pressure gradient and the energy loss, while the effect of the distance between two ports on them was not so significant.

This paper investigates CFD investigation on single phase supersonic nozzle flow and 2-phase subson ic flow prior to rocket nozzle supersonic 2-phase flow with water injection within the flame deflector. Numerical results of supersonic nozzle single phase flow showed no notable unrealistic behavior as it captures the usual shock cell structures. Three-dimensional 2-phase flow analysis has also been performed to verify whether the approach can grab the droplet behavior during cooling by water injection. It is expected these basic studies will enhance the cooling problem analysis of supersonic 2-phase rocket plume in the future.
The method of mass flow rate measurement using a critical nozzle is well established in the flow satisfying ideal gas law. However, in the case of measuring high-pressure gas flow, the current method shows invalid discharge coefficient because the flow does not follow ideal gas law. Therefore an appropriate equation of state considering real gas effects should be applied into the method. The present computational study has been performed to give an understanding of the physics of a critical nozzle flow for high-pressure hydrogen gas and find a way for the exact mass flow prediction. The two-dimensional, axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations are computed using a fully implicit finite volume method. The real gas effects are considered in the calculation of discharge coefficient as well as in the computation. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental data and predict well the measured mass flow rates. It has been found that the discharge coefficient for high-pressure hydrogen gas can be corrected properly adopting the real gas effects.
Present study simulates oscillatory supersonic impinging jet flows using the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code. To capture the salient features of flow oscillation and overcome the divergence during the initial transient period, several tests have been conducted for the grid and time step sizes. The results also show that the effects of the inlet flow condition at the nozzle exit and turbulence on the oscillatory behavior of supersonic impinging jets are negligible. Frequencies of the surface pressure oscillation obtained by the selected numerical method are in good accord with the measured impinging tones for various cases of nozzle-to-plate distance. Two seemingly different staging behaviors with nozzle-to-plate distance and nozzle pressure variations are found to correlate well if the frequency and distance are normalized by the length of the first shock cell.

A rapid expansion of moist air or steam in a supersonic nozzle gives rise to condensation, and the total pressure of the flow is decreased due to this irreversibility of condensation phenomenon. In the present paper, the loss in total pressure during the condensation process has been studied, by numerical analysis and pressure measurement, in the case of moist air expanding in a supersonic nozzle. The effects of the degree of supersaturation at the stagnation condition and expansion rate of the nozzle on the total pressure loss have been studied. The length of the region where the total pressure decreases during the condensation process is longer than that of the nonequilibrium condensation region, and of difference between the length of these two increases with the increase of the degree of supersaturation at the stagnation condition. Furthermore, the larger the expansion rate of the nozzle and the higher the temperature and the degree of supersaturation at the reservoir are, the larger the total pressure loss of the flow becomes. And, it is turned out that the total pressure loss be about 2 to 8 percent in the present study.
Atomized liquid jets from the washing nozzle which configured with recirculation chamber for cleaning hot-zone area are accelerated and impinged on the head lamp surface. Cleaning efficiency of head lamp can be increased with injecting washing fluids into the hot-zone area. Experimental and numerical studies with various design parameters were executed to reveal the relations between internal geometry and internal flow in the washing nozzle. Spray structures were fitted with each of the head lamp surfaces and spray nozzles were optimized to the spray pattern. The recirculation chamber induces a recirculation flow and can be decreased the pressures perturbation inside the chamber. Orifice determines the mass flow rate. When the diameter of orifice is excessively large, it showed an unstable spray pattern. As a nozzle exit angle increases, density distributions are separated with two section. Also, as a protrusion length of nozzle exit increases, spray patterns are spread into a large area and density distributions showed unstable trend.

A turbulent wake generated by a cylinder in nozzle contraction affects to the jet flow characteristics. In this study, a computational work to investigate the effect of the turbulent wake on two-dimensional subsonic jet was carried out with three different kinds of nozzle. Computations are applied to the two-dimensional unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations. Several kinds of turbulent models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. It was known that the wake flow enhanced the spread of the jet flow, compared with no wake flow condition. It was also found that the jet core is shortened by the wake flow developed from a control cylinder.

A computational analysis of nozzle flow characteristics and plume structure is conducted to examine performance of the supersonic nozzle employed in a thruster for ground firing test. At first, flow simulations in two-dimensional converging-diverging nozzle are performed for the verification of computational capability as well as turbulence model validity. Axisymmetric converging-diverging nozzles for ground firing test are analyzed with the k-${\omega}$ SST model. A performance penalty caused by flow separation in a diverging section is observed in initially-designed nozzle. The performance could be enhanced by the modification of the diverging section of nozzle contour.

Compound choking frequently occurs at a minimum area of the flow passage, where two or more streams which have different stagnation properties are merged. This phenomenon is especially important in that the flow choking may not be given by Mach number, M=1 at the nozzle throat. In order to obtain a detailed understanding of the flow characteristics involved in the compound flow choking, the two-dimensional, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are solved using a fully implicit finite volume method and the predicted solutions are compared with the results of the one-dimensional theoretical analysis. Stagnation pressure and temperature of each stream are changed to investigate the effects on the compound choking. The results show that stagnation pressures of each stream affect Mach number and static pressure distributions downstream of the exit of the convergent nozzle. However, the flow characteristics of the compound choking are not significantly dependent on the total temperature ratio.
The characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. In the present study, a thermal-infrared camera and high speed CCO camera were used to measure their temperature and local rising velocity, respectively. Heat transfer from bubble surface to water is largely completed within z=10mm from the nozzle, and then the temperature of bubble surface reaches that of water rapidly. The rising velocity of bubble was calculated for two different experimental conditions: 1) bubble flow without kinetic energy 2) with kinetic energy. Bubble flow without kinetic energy starts to undergo the effect of inertia force 10cm away from the nozzle. Whereas, kinetic energy is dominant before 30 cm away from the nozzle in bubble flow, but after this point, kinetic energy and inertial force are applied on bubble flow at the same time.
