  • Drag reduction in polymer solutions is the phenomenon where by extremely dilute solutions of high molecular weight polymers exhibit frictional resistance to flow much lower than the pure solvent. This effect, largely unexplained as yet, has attracted the attention of polymer scientists and fluid flow specialists. Although applications are beginning to appear, the principle interest to data has been in attempting to relate the effect to the fluid mechanics of turbulent flow. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, and pool and boiling flow. But the research on drag reduction in two phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction produced by polymer addition in the single phase and two phase flow system. The objectives of the proposed investigation are primarily in identifying and developing high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag. Also we want to is to evaluate the drag reduction in horizontal flow by measuring pressure drop and mean velocity. Experimental results show higher drag reduction using co - polymer(A611P) then using polyacrylamide (PAAM) and faster degradation using PAAM than using A611P under the same superficial velocity.

  • The purpose of this research is to model numerically the turbulent gas-particle flows in a rectangular chamber using Eulerian-Eulerian Method. A computer code using the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-Ap$ two-phase turbulence model is developed for the numerical study. This code and the Eulerian multiphase model in FLUENT were used for the numerical simulations of the two-phase flow in a rectangular chamber. The numerical results calculated by the two different turbulent gas-particle codes have shown that the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-Ap$ model results in a stronger diffusion of the flow momentum in the gas-particle turbulence interaction than the Eulerian multiphase model in FLUENT.

  • Numerical analysis is made on the turbulent heat transfer with suspension of solid particles in circular tube with constant heat flux. The mean motion of suspending particles in mixture is treated as the secondary gas flow with virtual density and viscosity. Our modeling of turbulent transport phenomena of suspension flow is based on this assumption and conventional mixing length theory. This paper gives the evidence that the mixing length models can be extended to close the governing equations for two phase turbulent flow with solid boundary at a first order level. Results on Nusselt numbers obtained by analytical treatments are compared with available experimental data and discussed. They suggest that the most important parameters of two phase turbulent heat transfer phenomena are relative particle diameter to pipe diameter, gas-solid loading ratio, and specific heat of suspending material.

  • The interfacial area transport equation dynamically models the changes in interfacial structures along the flow field by mechanistically modeling the creation and destruction of dispersed phase. Hence, when employed in the numerical thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes, it eliminates artificial bifurcations stemming from the use of the static flow regime transition criteria. Accounting for the substantial differences in the transport mechanism for various sizes of bubbles, the transport equation is formulated for two characteristic groups of bubbles. The group 1 equation describes the transport of small-dispersed bubbles, whereas the group 2 equation describes the transport of large cap, slug or chum-turbulent bubbles. To evaluate the feasibility and reliability of interfacial area transport equation available at present, it is benchmarked by an extensive database established in various two-phase flow configurations spanning from bubbly to chum-turbulent flow regimes. The geometrical effect in interfacial area transport is examined by the data acquired in vertical fir-water two-phase flow through round pipes of various sizes and a confined flow duct, and by those acquired In vertical co-current downward air-water two-phase flow through round pipes of two different sizes.

  • A numerical simulation was made to determine the motion of particles in the fluid. The simulation is based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The fluid motion was solved using a PISO-based finite-element method and a $\kappa-\epsilon$ model of turbulence. In the Lagrangian method for the solid phase, the trajectories of particles are calculated by integrating the equations of motion of a single Particle, and the collision between particles are taken into account. The influence of particles on the fluid phase is taken into account by introducing source terms in the Eulerian equations govering the fluid flow. It is known as the particle-source-in-cell (PSIC) method. Also, the turbulent effect in the particles and fluid notion is considered. The numerical results were compared with the experiment for a two-phase flow in a vertical pipe.

  • The predictions of the COBRA-IV-I code with the modified turbulent mixing and void drift models have been compared with the diabatic two-phase flow data on equilibrium quality. The turbulent mixing model based on an equal mass exchange of the existing COBRA-IV-I code has been modified to that based on an equal volume exchange between adjacent subchannels, and a void drift model has been newly incorporated in the code. To evaluate the performance of the equal volume exchange turbulent mixing model and the effects of the void drift model, the diabatic steam-water two-phase flow data obtained for the 9-rod bundle test under the typical operating conditions of the boiling water reactor(BWR) conducted by the General Electric (GE) were analyzed by the modified COBRA-IV-I code. The analysis indicates that the equal volume exchange turbulent mixing model with void drift predicts the observed two-phase flow data trends better than the equal mass exchange model, and to predict the correct data trends a more physically based void drift model need to be developed.

  • Since the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow is the difficulty topic, a numerical simulation for two phase flow remains as one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around conical body combined with cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with k-e turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations. Also, the calculation of cavitation in cryogenic fluid is being done by implementing the temperature sensitivity in government equations and it is still in the progress. This code have been being further extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics around inducers and impellers in turbo pump system.

  • The phenomena of two-phase suspension flows appear widely in nature and industrial processes. Hence, it is of great importance to understand the mechanism of the gas-solid two-phase flows. In the present study, the numerical simulation has been approached by utilizing the Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology for describing the characteristics of the fluid and particulate phases in a vertical pipe and a 90°square-sectioned bend. The continuous phase(gas phase) is described by the Eulerian formulation and a κ-ε turbulence model is employed to find mean and turbulent properties of the gas phase. The particle properties(velocity and trajectory) are then described by a Lagrangian approach and computed using the mean velocity and turbulent fluctuating velocity of the gas phase. The predictions are compared with measurements by laser-Doppler velocimeter for the validation. As a result, the calculated results show good agreements.

  • The turbulent properties in a mixed statistically stationary flow were investigated experimentally by a pseudo stereoscopic PIV. In order to validate the experimental results, the profiles of the turbulent kinetic energy were evaluated with the flow features. A mechanical agitator having 6 blades was installed at the bottom of the mixing tank (D=60cm, H=60cm). The agitator was rotated with 80rpm clockwise and counter-clockwise. For the measurements, three cameras were used and all were synchronized. The images captured by one of the three cameras was used for the measurement of rotational speed, and the images captured by the other two cameras were used to measure three dimensional components of velocity vectors. All vectors captured at the same rotational angle were phase averaged to construct three-dimensional vector fields to reconstruct the spatial distribution of the flow properties. It was seen that the jet scrolling along the tank was the main source of mixing.
