A high frequency and energy density pulse transformer is a critical component of a high voltage power supply in a traveling wave tube (TWT) amplifier system. In this paper, processes of design, manufacturing, and test of the transformer are discussed. Primary voltage of the transformer is 240 V. The transformer secondary have two outputs which are 4100 V (Helix) and 2050 V (Collector). Total output power is 860 W. Normal operating frequency of the transformer is 10 kHz. In high energy density pulse transformers, temperature rise is a main problem during its operation. From our study, it was found that resonant current due to leakage inductance and stray capacitance was the main cause of temperature rise. This happens because of the inherently high turn-ratio in high voltage transformers. Solutions to reduce stray components are presented.
A new primary-side-assisted zero-voltage and zero-current switching full bridge DC-DC converter with transformer isolation is proposed. The auxiliary circuit adopted to assist ZCS for the leading leg is composed of only one small transformer and two diodes. It has a simple and robust structure, and load current control capability even in short circuit conditions. Possibility of magnetic saturation due to asymmetricity of circuits or transient phenomena is greatly reduced, which is a very attractive feature in DC/DC converters with transformer isolation. The power rating of the auxiliary transformer is about 10% of that of the main transformer. Operation of a 12.5KW prototype designed for welding application was verified by experiments.
Numerical calculations of turbulent natural convection in an enclosure of the 20 kYA oil-immersed transformer model are presented. The transformer is modelled as two concentric cylinders with different heights and diameters. The thermal boundary layers are well represented in the temperature distributions along the wall of the transformer model. The flow stratification between the hot and cold walls can not be seen in the transformer model. The turbulence eddy viscosity has its maximum at the center of the core and its maximum values at the top of the core are larger than those at the bottom of the core.
A noise reduction equipment in power systems was device combined in a passive element such as the form of L, R and C. A analysis of frequency characteristics for the transformer models shall be considered the additional capacitance between the windings($C_{ps}$), terminals($C_s$), and winding-ground($C_g$). A noise in transformer is modeled by take account into the different frequency. In case of the high frequency, transformer windings with stray capacitance have lower impedance. Therefore a noise is transferred from primary winding to secondary winding. Noise Cut Transformer(NCT) was the noise reduction device and was normally single phase two-winding type transformer. We analyzed frequency characteristics using the nodal network analysis with the equivalent circuit and the simulation of the MATLAB.

Leakage inductance and temperature rise are two of the more impotent problems facing the magnetic core technology of today's high frequency transformers. Excessive leakage inductance increases the stress on the switching transistors and limits the duty-cycle, and excessive temperature rise can lead the design limitation of high frequency transformer with high current. The flat transformer technology provides a very good solution to the problems of leakage inductance and thermal management for high frequency power. The critical magnetic components and windings are optimized and packaged within a completely assembled module. The turns ratio in a flat transformer is determined as the product of the number of elements or modules times the number of primary turns. The leakage inductance increase proportionately to the number of elements, but since it is reduced as the square of the turns, the net reduction can be very significant. The flat transformer modules use cores which have no gap. This eliminates fringing fluxes and stray flux outside of the core. The secondary windings are formed of flat metal and are bonded to the inside surface of the core. The secondary winding thus surrounds the primary winding, so nearly all of the flux is captured.
The first attention in designing a transformer for low temperature rise should be to reduce losses. Recently, The demands for the reduction of noise generated by transformers have been increasing. Almost all of the noise generated by transformers is a result of magnetostricitive vibration in the core. The noise radiates into the atmosphere from the tank through the insulation oil. As the noise of transformer irritates residents, needs for decreasing the noise of transformer have been arised. One method of reduction such a noise is to build a free-standing enclosure of concrete and steel plates around the transformer. However, this method has some disadvantages. Another method of noise reduction is to mount a close-fitting sound insulation panel on the side of a transformer tank. Side plate vibrations of transformer are transmitted to such a sound insulation panel along two paths. In one case, they are transmitted through air by sound pressure and in the other through supporting structures. In the paper, the vibration and noise effect which is transferred from reinforce channel to insulation panel generated by transformer have been identified for the several kinds of insulation panel and damping sheet analytically and experimetally.
This paper proposes a tree-winding transformer protective relaying algorithm based on the ratio of increment of flux linkages (RIFL). The RIFL of the two windings is equal to the turns ratio for all operating conditions except an internal faults. For a single-phase transformer and three-phase transformer containing the wye-connected windings, the increments of flux linkages are calculated. for a three-phase transformer containing the delta-connected windings, the difference of the increments of flux linkages between the two phases are calculated using the line currents, because the winding currents are practically unavailable. Their ratios are compared with the turns ratio. The results of various tests show that the algorithm successfully discriminates internal faults from normal operation conditions such as magnetic inrush, overexcitation and external faults. The algorithm can not only detect internal winding faults, but reduce the operating time of a relay.
The two-transformer full bridge (TTFB) PWM converter has two transformers which act as the output inductor as well as the main transformer, i.e. as the forward and the flyback transformer. Although the doubled leakage inductor of the TTFB makes it easier to achieve the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) of the lagging leg switch along the wide load range, it instigates a serious voltage ringing in the secondary rectifier diodes, which would require the dissipative snubber circuit, cause the serious power dissipation, and increase the voltage stress across those diodes. To overcome these problems, a, new lossless diode-clamp rectifier (LDCR) is employed as the output rectifier, which helps the voltage across rectifier diodes to be clamped on a half the output voltage $(V_o/2)$ or the output voltage $(V_o)$. Therefore, no dissipative snubber for rectifier diodes is needed and a high efficiency as well as low noise output voltage can be realized. The operations, analysis and design consideration of proposed converter are presented in this paper. To verify the validity of the proposed converter, experimental results from a 425W, 385-170Vdc prototype for the plasma display panel (PDP) sustaining power module (PSPM) are presented.
The modularized subunit of an electronic power transformer (EPT) is a series connection of two H-bridge voltage-source converters and a DC-DC converter with a high-frequency isolation transformer (HFIT). On the basis of cascading and paralleling the modularized subunits, EPT can be used in high-voltage and large-current applications in the power system. This paper discusses the steady state analysis of the modularized subunit of EPT. Theoretical analysis considers the influences of the two H-bridge voltage-source converters on the two sides of the DC-DC converter. We deduce the formulas of the theoretical calculation on the internal electrical characteristics of EPT (e.g., the voltages of the DC-bus capacitor and the primary side peak current of the HFIT). This paper provides guidance on the design and selection of EPT key elements (e.g., the DC-bus capacitors and HFIT). Experimental results are obtained from a single subunit of a laboratory model rated at 962 V, 15 kVA. All calculations, simulations, and experiments confirm the theoretical analysis of the subunit of EPT.
