  • The stability of a thin plate structure is very crucial problem which results buckling. Because the buckling strength of thin plates is lower than the yield strength of the material, reinforcement plate must be used to increase the buckling strength. And, in this case, spot welding is commonly used, however, the spot welded joints are practically designed by experimental decisions, so it is Inefficient and has the risks of buckling demolition. In this study, two parameters, such as the area ratio and the distance ratio of spot welding which have influence on the buckling strength, should be chosen. Under compressive and shearing load, the effect of two parameters on the critical stress is discussed.

  • The mechanical behavior of two rectangular plates spot-welded under bending is investigated in detail. The focus of the analysis is to evaluate the effect of thickness of reinforced plates with equivalent thickness. The results of this investigation are compared from detailed finite element analysis and experiments of the plates spot-welded for various parameters, such as aspect ratio, area ratio, and distance ratio of spot-welding points. The study is carried out using the equivalent thickness of the reinforced plates spot-welded.

  • This study is to analyze the intensity of welding part by simulating the dynamic procedure during the fracture of plates with spot welding. The upper and tower plates attached with spot welding can be seen to fall apart at the elapsed time of 0.64 ms after the upper plate is stretched from the lower plate. The maximum von Mises stress is shown at the welding part in the mid of upper and lower plates. The internal energy decreases largely and the kinetic energy increases suddenly near the elapsed time of 0.64 ms when welding part breaks down. The sliding energy decreases with step-by-step style as the time elapses. The value of this energy becomes 0 at the elapsed time of 0.2 ms and on the contrary, two plates stick each other as this value becomes a minus after this time.

  • This stability of a plate structure is very crucial problem which results in wrinkle and bucking. In this study, the effect of the pattern of spot-welding points of the two rectangular plates on the compressive buckling load is studied with respect to the thickness, aspect ratio of plates, number of welding spots. buckling coefficient of the plate not welded was compared with that of two plates with various thickness to extract the effect of thickness. The effect of number of welding spots are studied in tow directions, longitudinal and transverse directions. The conclusions obtained were that the reinforcement effect was maximized when the aspect ratio was close to 1.25 and that the effect of number of welding spots in transverse direction was large than that in longitudinal direction.

  • Automobile manufacturers have employed resistance spot welding(RSW) to join steel sheets for structural rigidity o automobile body. Driven by the need to reduce weight and fuel consumption, car companies have been evaluating aluminum intensive vehicles(AIVs) as a way to reduce vehicle weight without downsizing. During the transition from all steel-construction vehicle body to aluminum intensive body, joining aluminum to steel sheets emerges as a serious contender in automobile body. This paper deals with application of transition material to RSW aluminum to steel. Placing transition material insert between the aluminum/steel interface was found very effective to overcome incompatibility between aluminum and steel. Use of transition insert allows for two separate weld muggets to be formed in their respective aluminum/ aluminum and steel/ steel interfaces. This RSW process was monitored with the aid of dynamic resistance sampling. Typical patterns in sampled dynamic resistance curves indicated formation of sound nugget. (Received February 28, 2000)

  • Spot welding behavior of galvanized steel has been studied using both numerical and experimental techniques. The model that used to calculate temperature distribution within weldment is two-dimensional axis-symmetric finite difference method, and nugget sizes of specimen welded in condition of welding current and time has been estimated by experiment Results have shown that nugget sizes are increased in proportion to welding current and time, but the growth rate of nugget is decreased. Shear-tensile strength tests have shown interface fracture when welding current is 7, 9KA, welding time is 8-14cycle and 11KA, 8-10cycle respectively, but above 7, 9KA fracture shows button type. In button fracture, shear-tensile strengths have been proportional to nugget sizes.

  • Air gun has been one of the good tools to press two sheet metals. However, it is not easy to control the acting force precisely. A Servo-gun is a good tool to control the acting force on the workpiece comparing with the air gun. Servo-gun has a higher tensile shear strength and lower indentation depth as well as smaller spatter. Dynamic resistance was obtained according to the acting force and welding current. As the acting force was changed during welding, the welding quality was increased.

  • Nowadays, car manufacturers tried to improve automotive fuel efficiency, and applied many high strength steels such as AHSS or UHSS to car bodies. Therefore, the number of steel combinations for the resistance spot welding are dramatically increased and the need for weldability evaluation of these combinations are also required. In this study, we suggest the lobe curve using FEM simulations for DP780 steel with 1.0t, 1.4t. The lobe curves which could expressed weldablity and optimal welding condition were obtained according to 6 steel combinations. There were two combinations for same steel sheet which were DP780 1.0t, DP780 1.4t. Dissimilar steel sheet combination with different thickness was 1.0t and 1.4t of DP780. Different steel combinations were DP780 1.0t and SPRC440 1.0t, and DP780 1.0t and DP590 1.0t. Finally dissimilar combinations was and DP780 1.0t and DP590 1.4t. The trend of low boundary and high boundary variation of lobe curve were analyzed with a viewpoint of the contact resistance and the heat input.
