  • The notion of effective transport property of a heterogeneous medium implies that the medium is large enough that the ergodic theorem holds and local fluctuation of the property can be neglected. In case that the medium is not large enough compared to its characteristic microstructure length scale, the effective property fluctuates and differs from the value of the medium being large enough. As a representative transport phenomenon, diffusion was considered and the fluctuation of varying effective diffusion property, diffusion coarseness $C_k$, was defined as a quantifying parameter. Scaled effective diffusion property, $^*$>/k$_1$ and $C_k$ were computed for the two phase random media consisting of matrix of diffusion coefficient k$_1$ and spheres of diffusion coefficient k$_2$. Numerical simulations were performed by use of the so-called first passage time technique and data were collected for existing microstructure models of hard spheres(HS), overlapping spheres(OS) and penetrable concentric shells(PCS).

  • The sloshing tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure by the liquid on the tank. These flow characteristics inside the sloshing tank can generate the uncomfortable sloshing noise. In the present study, a numerical analysis for the reduction of a fuel tank sloshing noise was performed. To simulate the flow characteristics in a sloshing tank with partially filled liquid, a VOF method was used for interfacial flows by applying a momentum source term for the sloshing motion in a non-inertial reference frame. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. For the reduction of the sloshing noise, the horizontal and vertical baffles and porous media inside a sloshing tank were considered and numerically analyzed in the present study. For various installations of these baffles and porous media, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank were obtained along with the impact pressure on the wall and the height of the free surface along the wall. These basic results can be used for the design of the actual vehicular fuel tank with the reduced sloshing noise.

  • In this paper, a cooperative jamming network with multiple relays and multiple eavesdroppers is investigated. Among the relays, one best relay is selected to amplify and forward the signal to destination through two phases. To confuse eavesdroppers, the destination transmits a jamming signal in the first phase and the source transmits jamming signal in the second phase. Secrecy rate of this system is derived, and based on the available channel state information (CSI), relay selection schemes are proposed, respectively. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed relay selection scheme outperforms than that of random relay selection scheme.

  • PAJU Book City Plan was designed to integrate two concepts of "Publishing Productive City" and "Ecological City" with the goal of "bringing of human being and nature together". This research on the post occupancy evaluation on PAJU Book City has two aims; One is to define how people, mainly working there rather than living, recognize the city and the other is to identify the problems resulted from the first phase of planning process and to suggest feasible solutions at the same time. It would be desirable that the outcome of this research should be used as data sources to improve the second phase of the plan. The evaluation criteria were created by the pre-survey on the basis of previous researches and "Pa Ju publishing city architectural design guide book (1999)". With those criteria, on-site questionnaire was conducted among people who work in PAJU Book City and stratified sampling was used for the proper sampling. The result is as follows; the visual-aesthetic criteria had positive response, which also closely related to a city satisfaction. Considering this result, construction type, circumferential environment of the building and a place of building form were found appropriate. The evaluation on the physical-ecological criteria was relatively low. Respondents were unsatisfied with green space and required better ecological waterway and more roadside tree. As green space was given a lot of weight in satisfaction survey, more green urban areas should be planned in the next phase. The evaluation on the social-behavior criteria got the lowest score. Particularly, the accessibility and convenient facilities were remarkably low. Nonetheless, the self-conceit about PAJU Book City was highly evaluated and played a crucial role in a city satisfaction. In order to achieve the goal, physical beauty, characteristics as a publication city as well as an ecologically sustainable city should be main agenda in the second phase of Paju Book City Plan. Consequently, it is important to strike a balance between the external environment and image media in order that PAJU Book City should be re-born as a culture city.

  • Simulation for a dynamic analysis of the electrolytic preparation of U(IV) in two-phases system, which consisted of mass transfer of U(VI) from TBP phase into HNO$_3$ solution and electrolytic re-duction of U(VI) to U(IV) at a cathode in aqueous phase, was carried out in order to establish the most suitable operating condition and best electrode area as basic design data for the system. It was found that maintaining an appropriate mass transfer rate was more significant rather than enlarging the surface area of the cathode for more effective production yield of U(IV). The electrode area and the operation time affected deeply the production composition of U(IV) in the resulting aqueous phase. And optimal electrode areas ore evaluated to meet production criteria of U(IV) of resulting solution in several system conditions. Though about 0.37M HNO$_3$ was preferable to prepare the solution of U(IV), nitric acid concentration should be higher than 0.5M to prevent a hydrolysis of U(IV) in the aqueous phase.

  • Two mesophilic trickling bed bioreactors filled with two different types of media, hydrophilic- and hydrophobic-cubes, were designed and conducted for hydrogen production under the anaerobic fermentation of sucrose. Each bioreactor consisted of the column packed with polymeric cubes and inoculated with heat-treated sludge obtained from anaerobic digestion tank. A defined medium containing sucrose was fed by the different hydraulic retention time(HRT), and recycle rate. Hydrogen concentrations in gas-phase were constant, averaging 40% of biogas throughout the operation. Hydrogen production rate was increased till $10.5\;L{\cdot}h^{-1}{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of bioreactor when influent sucrose concentrations and recycle rates were varied. At the same time, the hydrogen production rate with hydrophobic media application was higher than its hydrophilic media application. No methane was detected when the reactor was under a normal operation. The major fermentation by-products in the liquid effluent of the both trickling biofilters were acetate, butyrate and lactate. In order to run in the long term operation of both reactor filled with hydrophilic and hydrophobic media, biofilm accumulation on hydrophilic media and biogas produced should be controlled through some process such as periodical backwashing or gas-purging. Four sample were collected from each reactor on the opposite hydrogen production rate, and their bacterial communities were compared by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of PCR products generated using bacterial 16s rRNA gene primers (8f and 926r). It was expressed a marked difference in bacterial communities of both reactors. The trickling bed bioreactor with hydrophobic media demonstrates the feasibility of the process to produce hydrogen gas. A likely application of this reactor technology can be hydrogen gas recovery from pre-treatment of high carbohydrate-containing wastewaters.

  • The aim of the present investigation is to examine the propagation of plane harmonic waves in transversely isotropic homogeneous magneto visco thermoelastic rotating medium with fractional order heat transfer and two temperature. It is found that, for two dimensional assumed model, there exist three types of coupled longitudinal waves (quasi-longitudinal, quasi-transverse and quasi-thermal) in frequency domain. phase velocities, specific loss, penetration depth, attenuation coefficients of various reflected waves are computed and depicted graphically. The effects of viscosity and fractional order parameter by varying different values are represented graphically.

  • The guided wave has been widely employed to characterize thin plates and layered media. The dispersion curves of phase and group velocities are essential for the quantitative application of guided waves. In the present work, a fully automated system for the measurement of backward radiation of LLW has been developed. The specimen moves in two dimensional plane as well as in angular rotation. The signals of backward radiation of LLW were measured from an elastic plate in which specific modes of Lamb wave were strongly generated. Phase velocity of the corresponding modes was determined from the incident angle. The generated Lamb waves propagated forward and backward with the leakage of energy into water. Backward radiated LLW was detected by the same transducer and its frequency components were analyzed to extract the related information to the dispersion curves. The dispersion curves of phase velocity were measured by varying the incident angle. Moving the specimen in the linear direction of LLW propagation, group velocity was determined by measuring the transit time shift in the ultrasonic waveform.

  • Differences in subsurface migration of LNAPL/DNAPL contaminants caused by a selection of 3-phase (aqueous, NAPL, and gas) relative permeability function (RPF) models in numerical modeling were investigated. Several types of RPF models developed from both experimental and theoretical backgrounds were introduced prior to conducting numerical modeling. Among the RPF models, two representative models (Stone I and Parker model) were employed to simulate subsurface LNAPLs/DNAPLs migration through numerical calculation. For each model, the spatiotemporal distribution of individual phases and the mole fractions of 6 NAPL components (4 LNAPL and 2 DNAPL components) were calculated through a multi-phase and multi-component numerical simulator. The simulation results indicated that both spilled LNAPLs and DNAPLs in the unsaturated zone migrated faster and reached the groundwater table sooner for Stone I model than Parker model while LNAPLs migrated faster on the groundwater table under Parker model. This results signified the crucial effect of 3-phase relative permeability on the prediction of NAPL contamination and suggested that RPF models should be carefully selected based on adequate verification processes for proper implementation of numerical models.
