A trace amount of 4-biphenylcarboxylate having a pre-twisted biphenyl moiety was attached to a poly(methyl methacrylate) side chain and the fluorescence properties of the chromophore were investigated in various solvents such as ethyl acetate and butyl chloride. At room temperature, the polymer exhibited a distinct red shift of the short wavelength emission (325 nm) and an enhanced emission intensity around 430 nm upon excitation at the absorption red edge. The temperature dependence of the intensity ratio (R) of the 325 nm emission to the 430 nm emission was observed when exciting at the red edge over the temperature range between -20 and 60 ℃. However, the temperature dependence was not observed when exciting at the shorter wavelength. The Arrhenius plot of the R value shows the activation energy of 6.0 kJ/mol which is in good agreement with the energy required for the twist of the biphenyl moiety. Together with the results of red edge excitation effects it was concluded that the pre-twisted geometry of the biphenyl moiety is preserved by the restriction of the polymer chain to facilitate the formation of the twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state upon excitation.
Let p : X → D be a proper surjective holomorphic submersion where X is a Kähler manifold and D is the unit disc in ℂ. Let Ω be a d-closed semi-positive real (1, 1)-form on X. If each Xs := p-1(s) for s ∈ D satisfies $-c_1(X_s)+{\Omega}{\mid}_{X_s}$ is Kähler, then the Kähler-Ricci flow twisted by ${\Omega}{\mid}_{X_s}$ has a long time solution by Cao's theorem. This family of twisted Kähler-Ricci flows induces a relative Kähler form ω(t) on the total space X. In this paper, we prove that the positivity of ω(t) is preserved along the twisted Kähler-Ricci flow.
This paper studies an effect of vibration on twisted string actuation inside conduit at high curvature angles. In our previous work. we have mentioned that twisted string actuators can be used to transmit power even at significant curvature angles of the conduit. However, several undesirable effects, namely pull-back, hysteresis, and chattering, were present during actuation due to friction between strings and the internal sheath of the conduit. This paper reports the results of experimental study on effects of vibration on twisted string actuation inside curved conduits. We have demonstrated that applying vibration generated near natural frequency of the system during the stages of twisting and untwisting cycles helped reduce pull-back and hysteresis and increase string contraction. In case when sheath was deflected by $180^{\circ}$ under a constant load of 3 kg, we were able to achieve over 40% decrease in pull-back and 30% decrease in hysteresis, compared with no vibration case.
Based on the displacement general solution of a pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, the shape function and stiffness matrix are deduced, and a new finite element model is proposed. Comparison analyses are made between the new proposed numerical model based on displacement general solution and the ANSYS solution by Beam188 element based on infinite approach. The results show that developed numerical model is available for the pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, and that also provide an accuracy finite element model for the numerical analysis. The effects of pre-twisted angle and flexural stiffness ratio on the mechanical property are also investigated.
A new extrusion process of the circular section product with helical fins could be developed by rotating extrusion die. The twisting of extruded product is caused by the twisted conical die surface connecting the die entrance section and the die exit section linearly. But, until now, because the process has used fixed extrusion die, it needs high pressure in order to twist billet and form fin shape on the surface of billet. So, during extruding billet, in order not to twist billet, the extrusion die is needed to rotate itself instead of twisting of billet. It is known that it is possible to reduce extrusion load of product with helical fins by analysis and experiments using rotating die. And it is known that, through the extrusion load analysis by $DEFORM^{TM}-3D$ software, optimal rotational velocity of rotating die can be obtained according to reduction ratio of area and twisted angle of die. And experiments and analysis using rotating extrusion die show that the twisted angle of product can be controlled by twisted angle of extrusion helical die and the rotational velocity of extrusion helical die.

Investigated whether fiber orientation distribution of twisted yarn composites and the fiber content are 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength and some correlation. Tensile strength of 0$^{\circ}$ directions of twisted yarn composites increased changelessly being proportional the fiber content and fiber orientation function get into anisotropic in isotropic. But, tensile strength ratio by separation of fiber filament of 90$^{\circ}$ directions tensile strength decreased when tensile load is imposed for width direction of reinforcement fiber. 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength ratio value of a twisted yarn composites not receive almost effect of the fiber content of fiber orientation function J = 0.4 lows. Although do, 20 wt% of the fiber content is high about 0$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ direction tensile strength ratio about 1.6~2 than 10 wt% from J = 0.4. Therefore. could know that effect of the fiber content is dominate.

In this paper, we proposed a mixed-mode s-parameter measurement system for measuring the performance of twisted pairs. A twisted pair is a balanced type component, its characteristics can not be directly measured using network analyzer, which is generally implemented as a unbalanced type. It is possible to convert between balanced signal and unbalanced signal by using a balun but it restricts the frequency range of the measurement system. The proposed system measures the performance of twisted pairs by measuring mixed-mode s-parameters using a 4-port vector network analyzer and a designed fixture, without using a balun. We measured the performance of a commercial Ethernet cable and compared with the results which measured by using baluns. The results showed that the proposed system is capable of measuring the performance of twisted pairs.

This paper shows the numerical and experimental results about the hydrodynamic characteristics of X-Twisted rudders having continuous twist of the leading edge along the span. All the results were compared with those of the semi-balanced rudder. Calculation through the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation (RANSE) code with propeller sliding meshes shows large inflow angle and fast inflow velocity in the vicinity of ${\pm}0.7$ R from the shaft center, so it may cause cavitation. Also, X-Twisted rudder has relatively small inflow angles along the rudder span compared with semi-balanced rudder. For the performance validation, rudders for two large container carriers were designed and tested. Cavitation tests at the medium sized cavitation tunnel with respect to the rudder types and twisted angles showed the effectiveness of twist on cavitation and the tendency according to the twist. And the resistance, self-propulsion and manoeuvring tests were also carried out at the towing tank. As a result, in the case of X-Twisted rudder, ship speed was improved with good manoeuvring performance. Especially, it was found out that manoeuvring performance between port and starboard was well balanced compared with semi-balanced rudders.

This paper describes the design of a full-spade twisted rudder section by using the genetic algorithm based on VLM(Vortex Lattice Method) and panel method. The developed propeller- rudder analysis program has been validated by comparing with experimental data. The developed code has been used for the design of a twisted full-spade rudder especially for finding out optimum section. The optimization has been firstly carried out by the genetic algorithm. The more detail variation of a rudder section has been also conducted by changing section profile in more detail to confirm the most optimum section profile. The developed new twisted rudder has been compared with existing twisted rudder by cavitation testing in the cavitation tunnel at MOERI. It is concluded that the developed twisted rudder has a lower cavity in comparison with existing twisted rudder. The verification of efficiency gain is expected to be carried out through self-propulsion tests in the near future.

In order to investigate force and cavitation characteristics for the flat & twisted rudders in the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), the rudder dynamometer was designed and manufactured. The measuring capacities of lift, drag and moment are ±1000 N, ±2000 N, and ±150 N-m, respectively. The present dynamometer uses the actuator with a harmonic drive to control the rudder angle without backlash. As the target ship is a military ship with twin shaft, each dynamometer was installed above the port & starboard rudders. After the installation of the model ship with all appendages, the model test composed of rudder force measurement and cavitation observation was conducted for the existing flat rudder & the designed twisted rudder. While the flat rudder showed the big difference of lift & moment between port & starboard, the twisted rudder presented a similar trend. The cavitation of the twisted rudder showed better characteristics than that of the flat rudder. Another set of model tests were conducted to investigate rudder performance by the change of the design propeller. There was little difference in rudder performance for the design propellers with slight geometric change. Through the model test, the characteristics of the flat & twisted rudders were grasped. On the basis of the present study, it is thought that the rudder with better performance would be developed.
