  • In general, the effect of roll motion is not considered in the study on maneuverability in calm water. However, for high-speed twin-screw ships such as the DTMB 5415, the coupling effects of roll and other motions should be considered. Therefore, in this study, the estimation of maneuverability using a 4-degree-of-freedom (DOF; surge, sway, roll, yaw) maneuvering mathematical group (MMG) model was conducted for the DTMB 5415, to improve the estimation accuracy of its maneuverability. Furthermore, a study on the change in turning performance according to the fin angle was conducted. To accurately calculate the lift and drag forces generated by the fins, it is necessary to consider the three-dimensional shape of the wing, submerged depth, and effect of interference with the hull. First, a maneuvering simulation model was developed based on the 4-DOF MMG mathematical model, and the lift force and moment generated by the side fins were considered as external force terms. By employing the CFD model, the lift and drag forces generated from the side fins during ship operation were calculated, and the results were adopted as the external force terms of the 4-DOF MMG mathematical model. A 35° turning simulation was conducted by altering the ship's speed and the angle of the side fins. Accordingly, it was confirmed that the MMG simulation model constructed with the lift force of the fins calculated through CFD can sufficiently estimate maneuverability. It was confirmed that the heel angle changes according to the fin angle during steady turning, and the turning performance changes accordingly. In addition, it was verified that the turning performance could be improved by increasing the heel angle in the outward turning direction using the side fin, and that the sway speed of the ship during turning can affect the turning performance. Hence, it is considered necessary to study the effect of the sway speed on the turning performance of a ship during turning.

  • Recently, impressive gains of performance and efficiency with apparently little or no loss in flow range have been seen with the use of LSVD(Low Solidity Vaned Diffuser) over vaneless diffuser. Experiments of the effects of the vane turning angle variations(positive, negative, zero), with the other design parameters fixed, on the performance and flow range were carried out. Diffusers with a zero turning angle have the best characteristics in terms of performance and efficiency and the FFT results show different frequency characteristics due to vane turning angles in low flow range.

  • To evaluate manoeuvring performance of merchant ships, the mathematical modeling group (MMG) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are used. However, it is difficult to use the MMG to evaluate the manoeuvring performance of fishing vessels, thus research using CFD simulations is necessary. Also, since the course-changing and turning ability is crucial in fishing operations, a rudder design suitable for fishing vessels is necessary. This study designs a rudder using National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) airfoil sections and evaluates its manoeuvring performance. A CFD model is used to evaluate the manoeuvring performance of the fishing vessel, and turning and zig-zag tests are conducted. The effectiveness of using CFD simulations based on Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations to assess the manoeuvring performance of fishing vessels was validated. No significant difference was found in the manoeuvring performance for hull forms and rudder designs for course-changing ability. However, the original hull form showed superior turning performance. Among five rudders with varying aspect ratios and shapes, the rudder with 5.5% aspect ratio had the best turning performance. Regarding the rudder design for fishing vessels, NACA airfoil was employed, and a rudder aspect ratio of 5.5% based on the immersed hull side area is recommended.

  • The load condition significantly influences ship maneuverability in calm water. In this research, the effect of the load condition on turning performance of a very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) sailing in adverse weather conditions is investigated by an MMG-based maneuvering simulation method. The relative drift direction of the ship in turning to the wave direction is $20^{\circ}-30^{\circ}$ in ballast load condition (NB) and full load condition (DF) with a rudder angle $35^{\circ}$ and almost constant for any wind (wave) directions. The drifting displacement in turning under NB becomes larger than that under DF at the same environmental condition. Advance $A_d$ and tactical diameter $D_t$ become significantly small with an increasing Beaufort scale in head wind and waves when approaching, although $A_d$ and $D_t$ are almost constant in following wind and waves. In beam wind and waves, the tendency depends on the plus and minus of the rudder angle.

  • In this study, die turning injection(DTI) mold design for manufacturing reservoir fluid tanks used for cooling in-vehicle batteries, inverters, and motors was conducted based on multi-field CAE. Part design, performance evaluation, and mold design of the reservoir fluid tank was performed. The frequency response characteristics through modal and harmonic response analysis to satisfy the automotive performance test items for the designed part were examined. Analysis of re-melting characteristics and structural analysis of the driving part for designing the rotating die of the DTI mold were performed. Part design was possible when the natural frequency performance value of 32Hz or higher was satisfied through finite element analysis, and the temperature distribution and deformation characteristics of the part after injection molding were found through the first injection molding analysis. In addition, it can be seen that the temperature change of the primary part greatly influences the re-melting characteristics during the secondary injection. The minimum force for driving the turning die of the designed mold was calculated through structural analysis. Hydraulic system design was possible. Finally, a precise and efficient DTI mold design for the reservoir fluid tank was possible through presented multi-field CAE process.

  • Recently, a vessel's maneuvering performance is considered to be an important subject to secure safety at short sea shipping. Especially the high turning performance, which is required to avoid the marine pollution by the ships that was grounded, becomes more severe. In this paper, we discuss the effect of increasing rudder force on turning performance of short sea shipping ship by free running test in towing tank. First of all, we make the 47K PC model ship and high-lift rudder using Coanda effect. And we make the free running test system for the turning test in towing tank. And also we perform the turing test of 47K PC model in several changes of Coanda jet momentum and evaluate the turing performance such as advance and tactical diameter. Finally, we confirm that the increasing of rudder force is very effective to improvement of turning performance of short sea shipping ship.

  • We compare engineering students' learning performance in introductory Statistics classes of the two class types, traditional in-classroom classes with a few reports and real-time online classes with quizzes. Rates of missing classes and turning in homeworks are also included to explain learning attitude. Scores of quizzes, midterm test and final test are used to assess performance. Upto the midterm, the class type is not significant, but rates of missing classes and turning in homeworks are significant. Since the midterm, in-classroom class type reveals better final performance than real-time online class type, rate of turning in homeworks is significant, but rate of missing classes is not significant.

  • As a basic machining process, turning is a widely used machining process in which a single-point cutting tool removes material from the surface of a rotating material. A common method of evaluating machining performance is to measure the surface roughness. In a turning operation, it is important to select cutting conditions for achieving high cutting performance. As a rule, cutting conditions can be classified into feed rate, depth of cut and insert radius. While cutting process even though cutting conditions are optimized, the average roughness can be deterioration due to wear of the cutting tool edge. In this study, the aim is to maintain the average roughness even though the cutting condition is irregularly changing within the predictable range due to the working environment. First, the surface roughness model influenced by cutting conditions is constructed based on the experimental results in a turning operation, Second, applying the sliding mode control theory to the turning operation model which is composed of the surface roughness model and the motor transfer function, the surface roughness is closed to the desired value. Finally, the effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated through the computer simulation.

  • Recently, a perforated caisson breakwater with turning wave blocks was developed to improve the water affinity and public safety of a rubble mound armored by TTP. In this study, hydraulic model tests were performed to examine the hydraulic performance of a non-porous caisson and new caisson breakwater with perforated blocks for attacking waves in a small fishery harbor near Busan. The model test results showed that the new caisson was more effective in dissipating the wave energy under normal wave conditions and in reducing the wave overtopping rates under design wave conditions than the non-porous caisson. It was found that the horizontal wave forces acting on the perforated caisson were slightly larger than those on the non-porous caisson because of the impulsive forces on the caisson with the turning wave blocks.
