  • PURPOSE: This research was designed to study the correlations between physical activities such as foot sensory impairment, balance and ambulatory abilities, as well as fall risk factors and mental activities such as cognitive performance and depression in order to provide fundamental data for the prevention of falling in the elderly. METHODS: A total of 36 elderly people over the age of 65 years who voluntarily joined the research were selected as subjects. Sensory perception in both feet was measured by using a monofilament in 10 parts with each part given one point. The points for each foot were integrated to analyze the correlations between physical and mental activities indices, and the results were analyzed by using Pearson's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The results of this research show that the extent to which senses in feet were impaired was correlated to TUG, a functional activity index involved in tranfers, gait, and turning movements, which was correlated to BBS (balance index) as well as MMSE-K and K-GDS (mental activities index). BBS was interrelated to FES-K (physical activities index) and MMSE-K. The muscular strength of the right ankle dorsiflexor had mutual relations with FES-K. CONCLUSION: The results of this research indicate that TUG is widely correlated to foot sensory impairment as well as general physical and mental activities in elderly people. BBS was also shown to be correlated with TUG, FES-K, and MMSE-K. Thus, it might be necessary that TUG and BBS be included as two items in physical and mental check-ups for the elderly, and further studies on correlations using evaluation items for physical and mental activities should lead to the simplification of the evaluation criteria.

  • Patients unable to speak are at higher risk for untreated pain. Use of valid behavioral and physiologic measures for pain is highly recommended for uncommunicative patients. This study was performed to compare the reliability and validity of NVPS-K and CPOT-K for pain assessment of nonverbal patients. This study was conducted from July to November 2011. A total of 29 nonverbal adult patients admitted to a university hospital intensive care unit participated in this study. Interrater reliability of the NVPS-K and CPOT-K had intermediate to high intraclass correlation coefficients (NVPS-K 0.680 ~ 0.921, CPOT-K 0.710 ~ 0.896). Discriminant validity was supported with higher instrument scores during turning and endotracheal suctioning than that of NIBP. For criterion validity, the NVPS-K scores were correlated to the self-reported pain of the patients but not the CPOT-K scores. The areas under the ROC curve for the NVPS-K and CPOT-K were 0.748 and 0.696 with cutoff points of 1 and 2, respectively. Thus, the NVPS-K and CPOT-K had a sensitivity and specificity of 94.7% and 45.0%, and 60.5% and 75.0%, respectively. The NVPS-K and CPOT-K are reliable and valid tools to assess pain in nonverbal patient and thus, are recommended for the assessment of the pain in nonverbal patients.

  • The Liangshan pig is a traditional Chinese small-sized breed; it has a relatively long feeding period and low meat production ability but superior meat quality. This study utilized three non-linear growth models (Von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and logistic) to fit the growth curve of Liangshan pigs from an unselected, random-bred pig population and estimate the pigs most suitable slaughter weight. The growth development data at 20 time points of 275 Liangshan pigs (from birth to 250 d) were collected. To analyze the relative gene expression related to development, seven slaughter weight phases (50, 58, 66, 74, 82, 90, and 98 kg) (20 pigs per phase) were examined. We found that the Liangshan pig growth curve fit the typical S-curve well and that their growth turning point was 193.4 days at a weight of 62.5 kg, according to the best fit Von Bertalanffy model based on the goodness of fit criteria. Furthermore, we estimated that the most suitable slaughter weight was 62.5 to 74.9 kg based on the growth curve and the relative expression levels of growth-related genes.

  • This paper attempts to estimate the energy price elasticity of per capita $CO_2$ emissions, which helps to understand the influence of recent energy price increase on the natural reduction of $CO_2$ emissions. For this purpose, this study researched panel data of twenty-nine OECD countries from 1978 to 2009 and adopted estimation models for testing the environmental Kuznets hypothesis. Estimation results show that the 1% increase of energy price index will cause a statistically significant decrease of per capita $CO_2$ emissions by 0.26 ~ 0.31%, which is substantial enough for policy consideration. Also Kuznet curves in estimation models were identifed, the turning points of income lie between 22.2~48.5 thousand US dollars, depending on model specifications.

  • Extrapyramidal movement disorders are divided descriptively into hypokinesias(such as parkinsonism), characterized by poverty and slowness of movement : hyperkinesias(such as chorea, athetosis, dystonia, ballism, etc.), manifested by abnormal involuntary movement. Chorea refers to widespread arrythythmic movements of a forcible, rapid, jerky, restless type Choreic movements are noted for their irregularity and variability. They are generally continuous, may be simple or quite elaborate, and affect any part of the body. Dystonla refers to abnormally increased muscular tone that causes fixed abnormal postures. Some patients with dystonia also have shifting postures, resulting from irregular, forceful twisting movement that affect trunk and produce bizarre, grotesque movements and positions of the body. The most frequent and familiar type of focal dystonia is spasmodic torticollis. It consists of an involuntary turning of the head to one side - intermittent at first, then gradually worsening to the point of being more or loss continuous. The combination of blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia is sometimes refered to as Meige's syndrome. We report two patients with dystonia and chorea in cerebral infarction at basal ganglia. We have experienced good improvement by the oriental medicine and acupuncture treatment.'rho acupuncture points of LI 4, ST 36, TE 3, GB 34, GB 41, LR 3, GB 39 were used. The therapies of herb-medicine were treated by Zibu-Ganshen(滋補肝腎), Huoxue-Xifeng-Tongluo(活血息風通絡).

  • This paper attempts to estimate and compare environmental Kuznets curves (EKC) for$CO_2$ emissions of five regions constituting South Korea. For this, panel data of $CO_2$ emission for these regions are constucted for the period 1990 - 2007. Close inter-dependency among these five regions is considered by using a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) model. In addition to real per-capita income, price index of energy sources and population dens ity are included as control variables. Results of estimates show the robust existence of EKC's in all these regions. EKC turning points of five regions range between 13.7 and 21.6 million Korean Won, showing a large variation. This difference among regions should be conisidered for the effective implementation of policies targeting the reduction of $CO_2$ emmission. In addition, the increase of energy price is found help reduce the $CO_2$ emmision while the rise of population density seems to lead to the increase of $CO_2$ emission.

  • The purposes of this study which was conducted by inquiring into some curricula for Emergency Medical Dispatchers(EMDs) are to introduce a curriculum into Korea and develop a textbook for training of the EMDs in Korea. The conclusions from this study were summarized as follows; (1) There are some professional demands in our Emergency Medical Dispatch field therefore, now it is necessary to set up an education system for the EMDs in Korea and give them a suitable name to this change. (2) Some historical turning points which are condensed from the developmental process in the USA. including "Medical Self Help" with no formal dispatch protocols, Medical Priority Dispatch System, Practice Standard, Dispatch Protocols will serve as a good reference for establishing and education system for the EMDs. (3) To effectively train the EMDs in Korea, we needed to be introduced to Emergency Medical Dispatch : National Standard of Curriculum from the U.S. Department of Transportation & the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which is made up Basic Emergency Medical Concepts, Information Gatherin & Dispatch, Introduction to the Emergency Medical Dispatch Protocol Reference System(EMDPRS) & 32 Chief Complaint Types. (4) The introduced curriculum closely related to the medical director, the direct indirect medical control, the scope of practice in the USA, should be revised for the Emergency Medical Service System of Korea. But to reduce the developmental process & time, it is necessary to postpone the consideration on these factors until publishing a new textbook. (5) This study which gives the cornerstone about some developmental methods on textbook for EMDs will be helpful to build up an education system for EMDs such as Curriculum, EMD Certification, National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch to fit the Emergency Medical Service System of Korea in the future.

  • Loyalty programs are everywhere these days, and among them, coalition programs, where a hub company makes a network of participating companies and users can collect and use points in a large number of participating shops, are in increase. There is little research on the coalition loyalty program. Using the case of OKCashbag, the first and biggest coalition loyalty program in Korea, this study examines whether success factors of single operator program are relevant to coalition programs. This paper contributes first by turning attention to an unexplored area of coalition loyalty programs. By offering an opportunity to reflect on success factors of both single operator and coalition programs, it will help practitioners in loyalty programs to develop innovative loyalty programs using increasingly sophisticated data collection capabilities of IT.

  • Traffic information can be broadly categorized into point information and spatial information. Point information can be obtained by chocking only the presence of vehicles at prespecified points(small area), whereas spatial information can be obtained by monitoring large area of traffic scene. To obtain spatial information by image processing, we need to track vehicles in the whole area of traffic scene. Image detector system based on global tracking consists of video input, vehicle detection, vehicle tracking, and traffic information measurement. For video input, conventional approaches used auto iris which is very poor in adaptation for sudden brightness change. Conventional methods for background generation do not yield good results in intersections with heave traffic and most of the early studies measure only point information. In this paper, we propose user-controlled iris method to remedy the deficiency of auto iris and design flame difference-based background generation method which performs far better in complicated intersections. We also propose measurement method for spatial traffic information such as interval volume/lime/velocity, queue length, and turning/forward traffic flow. We obtain measurement accuracy of 95%∼100% when applying above mentioned new methods.

  • Uniform semiclassical (WKB) solutions are obtained for nonseparable systems without using a close coupling formalism and are given explicitly in terms of well known analytic functions for various physically interesting and realistic cases. They do not become singular at turning points or surfaces and when taken in their asymptotic forms, they reduce to the usual WKB solutions that could be obtained if the Stokes phenomenon was properly taken care of for solutions. In obtaining such uniform solutions, the Schroedinger equations for nonseparable systems are suitably "renormalized" to solvable "normal" forms through certain transformations. Ehrenfest's adiabatic principle plays an important guiding role for obtaining such "renormalized" uniform solutions for nonseparable systems. The eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian can be calculated from the extended Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules when appropriate classical trajectories are obtained. An application is made to many-electron systems and for one of the simplest examples to show the utility of the method the approximate wavefunction is calculated of the ground state helium atom.
