A series of studies was conducted during 2 years to investigate the effect of transplanting time and turfgrass species on turf establishment rate of sod for 2002 World Cup Soccer ground construction. The required period of rooting and turf growth for acceptable soccer playing quality on transplanted sod from nursery was tested to collect data for the project authorities of hosting cities and construction companies who were involved in World Cup stadium project. Transplanting time significantly affects on rooting-potential of sod on cool season grass and zoysiagrass, but those effects differently showed by turfgrass species. The enough nursing period for the ground established by Zousiagrass should be secured with proper transplanting time. And the thermal insulation on the turf canopy with other maintenance during Winter should improve the early rooting on zoysiagrass. The sod contained Kentucky bluegrass (85%+15% perennial ryegrass, seed wt. basis) showed relatively slow at the early growth and rooting-potential of root, but the potential resulted higher than that of perennial ryegrass turf (85%+15% Kentucky) under longer nursing period. Kentucky bluegrass has one of the most strong resistance against environmental stresses, but intensive maintenance practise should be required when the turf transplanted during summer season. Higher mixture rate of perennial ryegrass sod has a rapid root growth compare with other turfgrass species. The rate provided a benefit to an early establishment of turf ground followed by a proper maintenance practise. For the completion of World Cup soccer ground construction for 2002, the most suitable time for sod transplanting in 2001 was March to May or mid Sept. to early Oct. by delayed architect construction schedule.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of crumb rubber recycled from used tires as a soil incorporation and topdressing materials on a trafficked Korean lawngrass‘Zenith’(Zoysia japonica). In Exp 1, incorporation treatments included three particle sizes (PS: coarse =4∼6.35 mm, medium =2∼4 mm, and One : less than 2 mm in diameter) and two incorporation rate (IR: 10 and 20%). Wear treatments were applied 30 passes per day by compactor weights being 60 kg with soccer shoes. Topdressing treatments included three PS and two topdressing depth (TD: 5 and 10 mm). Wear treatments were the same as described in Exp 1. In Exp 1, the treatment with medium PS+IR 20 resulted in the tendency to have high total clipping yield. There was no significant difference in clipping yield, turfgrass visual color, coverage, and root length among the treatments. Compared to control, tissue Zn levels increased about 6.5-fold by the treatments. The treatment with fine PS +IR 20 caused a less peak deceleration than coarse PS +IR 10. Total porosity, air-filled porosity, and capillary porosity increased with fine PS +IR 20. In Exp 2, compared to controls, however, there was a difference in turfgrass visual color after the termination of traffic treatment. There was no difference in root length. The treatment with fine PS + TD 10 resulted in the highest total clipping yield. As a result of soil physical analysis, soil penetration resistance was reduced by the treatments. The treatment with coarse PS resulted in a less peak deceleration than fine PS. In conclusion, turfgrass growth was increased by crumb rubber incorporation which enhanced soil physical properties. The crumb rubber topdressing was able to cushion the crown tissue area while still providing a smooth and uniform surface, improve overall turfgrass quality, and reduce compaction.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of application of SCB liquid fertilizer produced after slurry composting and biofiltration (SCB) on turfgrass growth in golf course during 6 month period from May to October in 2008. The change of soil properties by applying CF and SCB was unaffected respective treatments. As compared with NF, turf color index of CF, S-1 and S-2 increased by 1.8%, 2.5%, and 3.4%, respectively and chlorophyll content by 13%, 19%, and 25%, respectively. Dry weight of S-1 and S-2 was increased by 15% and 26% than that of CF. As compared with CF, N uptake rate in S-1 and S-2 was increased by 21% and 37%, P uptake rate 57% and 28%, and K uptake rate 16% and 27%, respectively. S-2 showed the best effect for turf color index, chlorophyll content, dry weigh and nutrient uptake rate in creeping bentgrass. These results suggested that an mixed application of SCB and compound fertilizer was improved turf quality and growth of creeping bentgrass by increasing nutrient uptake rate of turfgrass.
This study was carried out to utilize the waste heat from office building for turfgrass culture on a roof garden. Heating system had been installed in the middle of soil profile on the turf areas in the garden plots. The results showed that the installation of heating system increased the shoot density, turfgrass quality, coverage rate, and root length compared with the control plots. The surface temperature of heating plots reached at $10.9^{\circ}C$ when the control plot showed $0^{\circ}C$, however, the soil moisture content was decreased 1.9% by the heating system. When the height of the snow accumulation reached over a 15cm, the it took only 4 days to melt out completely, while the height did not changed those period at the control plots. When the water temperature in boiler increased to $60^{\circ}C$ from a proper temperature of $55^{\circ}C$ in turf growth, the desiccation from leaf tip was started to occur caused by drought stress. More detail research should be followed in stress physiology in turf management in roof garden operation.
The purpose of this experiment is for investigating how much the amino acid liquid fertilizer and composted liquid manure, culture microorganism effect on the breeding of grasses and knowing the extent of the thatch content through an analysis of the soil. For testing about soil chemical, the quality of grasses, and the extent of the thatch content in the soil, we cultivated 6 kinds of microorganisms having the effect of thatch dissolution and sprayed these 6 microorganisms with composted liquid manure and the amino acid liquid fertilizer on the place Creeping bentgrass have planted. This conduction started from June to October, 2012 and 2013 (The interval: 2 weeks). In the result of the turf growth, there is no big difference between soil chemical and trace element. And we can know Leaf Color Index, Chlorophyll Index and Root Length are almost same as among treatment. In conclusion, the mixing fertilization of culture microorganism and composted liquid manure is better effective than the traditional fertilization. And it can be expected the effect of the quality of grass and Thatch decomposition in soil.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus sp. and Saccharomyces sp. on turf quality, shoot and root growth of creeping betgrass in golf course by measuring turf color index, chlorophyll content, dry weight of shoot and root, T/R ratio and root length. Fertilizer treatment was designed as follows; nonfertilizer (NF), control (CF; compound fertilizer), microorganism medium(MO; CF+MO)), microorganism medium contained Fe(MO-Fe; CF+MO-Fe) and microorganisum medium contained S (MO-S; CF+MO-S). Soil properties investigated after experiment was scarcely affected by applied fertilizers in root zone of creeping bentgrass. The turf color index and chlorophyll index of MO, MO-Fe, MO-S treatment were higher than those of NF, and similar to those of CF. The turfgrass root in MO and MO-Fe treatment was longer than others. The dry weight of shoot in MO and MO-S was higher than CF and that of root in MO and MO-Fe, and dry weight of MO was increased than that of NF and CF, by 26% and 6%, respectively. AS compared with NF, T/R ratio of CF, MO, MO-Fe and MO-S was increased, and MO and MO-Fe was similar to CF, MO-S higher. Nutrient content in CF, MO, MO-Fe and MO-S was contained more than in NF, and it was higher in shoot. These was suggested that application of MO induced the development of quality and growth of creeping bentgrass by assisting root growth and nutrients uptake.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of developed SCB (DSCB) liquid fertilizer produced by adding N, P and K at SCB liquid fertilizer on the growth of kentucky bluegrass. Two different N sources used in DSCB were ammonium sulfate (DSCB-A) and urea (DSCB-U), respectively. Fertilizer treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), control (CF; chemical fertilizer), DSCB-A1 ($200\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-A), OSCB-A2 ($250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-A), OSCB-U ($250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$DSCB-U) and CF+SCB (CF+$250\;ml{\cdot}m^{-2}$SCB). Every treatment was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In kentucky bluegrass, turf color index, chlorophyll index, dry weight and nutrient contents were measured. Results were as follows; It was hardly affected by DSCB and SCB application in investigation of chemical properties of soil. Turf color index and chlorophyll index in DSCB and SCB treatments were increased by 1~2% and 19~24% than NF, respectively and similar to CF. As applied with DSCB and SCB, dry weight of DSCB-U and CF+SCB was increased by 36% and 10% than CF, respectively, but similar to that of OSCB-A1 and DSCB-A2. Evaluated with turf quality and growth, DSCB-U was the best in all treatment and OSCB-A1 the most efficient. These results indicated that applications of OSCB and SCB promoted turf quality and growth of kentucky bluegrass or similar to CF, so that they were expected to replace chemical fertilizers.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of composted liquid manure (CLM) on soil properties and turf quality of zoysiagrass. The CLMs were produced at 5 facilities for livestock excretions treatments located in Cheongwon, Gunwi, Iksan, Nonsan, and Yeoju in Korea, respectively. Field experiments were conducted at 5 golf courses and a sod farm located near each facility for livestock excretion treatments. Chemical fertilizer (CF) with N at $12g\;m^{-2}year^{-1}$ and CLMs were applied four times, respectively. The constituents of the different CLMs were variable based on when and where the fertilizer was produced. Soil K content significantly increased when the soil was treated with CLMs. The soil treated with CF showed a higher content of total P than that treated with CLM. CF and CLMs treatments significantly increased the turf color index compared with control. Tiller density and shoot dry weight of fertilized plots were also higher than those of non-fertilized plots. However, there was no significant difference in turf color index and tiller density among plots treated by CLMs or CF. The results of this study demonstrated that CLMs could be a substitute for CF.
This study was initiated to evaluate the seasonal turf performance in a tree shade and to suggest shade-tolerant turfgrasses suitable for domestic climate conditions. Atotal of 21 trufgrasses were tested, comprising of Korean lawngrass, shade-tolerant fine fescues, and newly-developed, shade-tolerant varieties of cool-season grasses. Dirrerences in shade tolerance were observed among varieties, species, and genera. Overall turf performance of C3 turfgrasses was better than that of C4 Korean lawngrass under a tree shade. Coarse-type fescues were excellent in shade tolerance, bluegrasses good, ryegrasses medium, fine-type fescues fair, and zoysiagrasses poor, respectively. Inter-species comparison in relative index of shade tolerance(IRST) demonstrated that tall fescue and fough bluegrass were greatest of 7.3, Poa supina 6.4, perennial ryegrass 5.0, Kentucky bluegrass 4.8, and fine fescues least, respectively. A great variation in RIST was observed with fine fescues; creeping red fescue was 3.6, chewings fescue 2.5, hard fescue 2.1, and sheep fescue 1.4, respectively. Among 21 turfgrasses evaluated, tall fescue 'Rebel Jr.', 'Era', and 'Oixie' and rough bluegrass 'Sabre' were the shade-tolerant varieties under a tree shade in Korea. Tall fescue, 'Rebel Jr.' was considered as the most shade-tolerant variety in the experiment. Fine fescues as creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, hare fescue, and sheep fescue, used as the shade-tolerant species in a cool climate of Europe and North America, were not suitable under domestic climate conditions.
The growth characteristics of cool season turfgrass in the seaside landfill golf courses with the single-use of kentucky bluegrass and mixed-use with kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass in the coast line are as follows. Water infiltration rate was higher in the kentucky bluegrass single-use groups recorded as 95.6∼125.9cm/hr than in the roups mixed with kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass recorded as 180.3∼386.2cm/hr. The surface soil hardness and the soil penetration were ranged from 16.6 to 18.0mm and from 6.0 to 7.3kg/cm$^2$, respectively. The cultivar that showed the most excellent visual quality and visual color in the kentucky bluegrass single-use groups was Midnight(KB2), whose density around the root was relatively excellent, as well. North Star(KB3) known as highly resistant to salt was the secondarily excellent cultivar. Brilliant(KB1) had visual quality of about third grade, however, it seemed profitable to develop turfgrass ground by virtue of its high density. As of April 26, 2003, when 2 weeks had passed after seeding, the visual quality was better in the groups mixed with kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye grass than in the kentucky bluegrass single-use groups. The most excellent visual color was found in Midnight(KB2)+Brightstar SLT(PR2) among the groups mixed with kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass. On August 4, 2003, a disease was found from one experimental group in Blackstone(KB4) and expanded into more than 50cm of diameter.
