  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the loss of various herbicides by means of vola-tility from the turfgrass field and the hare ground with the different soil moisture contents and temperatures. Different herbicides were applied at the rates of 375 g a.i. /l0a of pendimethalin,250 g a.i. /l0a of napropamide, and 96.4 g a.i. /l0a of dicamba with 200 \ulcorner/10a of spray volume in the turfgrass(Zoysia japonica cut off 5cm) grown in pots(265.8 $cm^2$) and bared soil. The pots were placed in the growth chamber with 10,000 lux of light intensity(12h per day) at 25 and 35˚C for 7days. Amberlite XAD polymeric resin(20/50 mesh) was used as sampling media for herbicide airborne residues. Air flow was maintained at 10 \ulcorner /min by vacuum pump regulated with a factory calibrated flow meter. Herbicide airborne residues were extracted from the XAD resin with 300 ml of 1:1 acetone and hexane. The extracts were concentrated by rotary evaporation at 35˚C and dissolved in 1 ml MeCN for HPLC analysis. The airborne losses of the herbicide applied in the turfgrass and bare soil increased as the temperature and soil moisture contents were increased, regardless of the kinds of herbicide. Higher airborne residues was observed in the turfgrass pots than the bare soil pots. Pendimethalin and dicamba with higher vapor pressure gave rise to the increased loss of airborne herbicides, showing that 6.26 and 6.4% of average airborne loss in pendimethalin and dicamba, respectively, compared to 0.56% in napropamide. The amount of airborne losses in turfgrass was highest at one day after application and then a declined trend was observed as the time was prolonged. Key words. Herbicides, Turfgrass field, Bare ground, Volatility.

  • This study was performed to develope the method of wildgrass to process as hydroseeding material which is a most popular revegetation method for Slope areas through the control of soil eroison and stability by seeding grasses. The wildgrass material for the processing were harvested at Suwon, Kyungki-do and Wonju, Kangwon-do in 1994. The investigations were established in laboratory for pot and field experiment with seven treatments by harvesting date and place in 1995. Results indicated that wildgrass harvested field in open space or road side was able to be used as hydroseeding material by proper processing. It was possible to substitute wildgrass seed to conrrnercial turfgrass seed, and plant tissue to mulching fiber by drying and crushing process. Germination of wildgrass seed was relatively slower than control (20g /$m^2$ turfgrass seed) in early stage of 20 days, but surface revegetation rate was higher in 50 days at wildgrass plot than control applied by normal hydroseeding method. Mixture of 5g /$m^2$ of cool season turfgrass seed to wildgrass material increased the rate of early stage of germination and surface revegetation. The application of wildgrass as hydroseeding material showed more naturalistic scenery than rutine hydroseeding with imported cool season turfgrass seed. Key words: Rydroseeding, Turfgrass, Wildgrass, Revegetation.

  • Transgenic zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica cv. Zenith) plants have been obtained by particle bombardment of embryogenic callus with the plasmid pSMABuba, which contains hygromycin resistance (hpt) and bialaphos resistance (bar) genes. Parameters on DNA delivery efficiency of the particle bombardment were partially optimized using transient expression assay of a chimeric $\beta-glucuronidase$(gusA) gene driven by the CaMV 35S promoter. Stably transfarmed zoysiagrass plants were recovered with a selection scheme using hygromycin. Transgenic zoysiagrass plants were confirmed by PCR analysis with specific primer for bar gene. Expression of the transgene in transformed zoysiagrass plants was demonstrated by Reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR analysis. All the tested transgenic plants showed herbicide BastaR resistance at the field application rate of $0.1\%-0.3\%$.

  • Turfgrass management had not been recognized as the subject to research until the social demand for turfgrass increased. This study was carried out to compare the effects of several complete fertilizers and ureaform(UF) with those of traditional fertilizers used for general agriculture. Complete fertilizers used in this study include Jandibiryo, Chojikwanri, Wonyebokbi and 18 - 18 - 18. Three exteriments were conducted in the established zoysiagrass field (over 5 years), in the recently established zoysiagrass field(1 years), and in the pots using artificially mixed media. In the established zoysiagrass, UF, Wonyebokbi, Chojikwanri and 18 - 18 - 18 resulted in higher growth rate, while Chojikkwanri and Jandibiryo showed better performance in the recently established zoysiagrass. Jandibiryo resulted in higher growth rate of zoysiagrass with the artificially mixed soil which is relatively infertile. Righer growth rates were maintained longer with UF, Jandidiryo, Chojikwanri than urea 18-18-18 and Wonyebokbi. Wonyebokbi had the characteristics of producing more stolons and rhyzomes than the other fertilizers.

  • Aphanisticus congener is a newly recorded buprestid (Coleoptera) insect pest of turfgrass in Korea. This buprestid pest was initially found from turfgrass conservation site in a greenhouse in Jinju, Gyeongnam province, Korea in July, 2014. The Aphanisticus in the family Buprestidae is a leaf miner. A. congener is the close species of A. aeneus which was firstly reported as sugarcane leaf sucker in India. A. congener was active from early July to late August in the greenhouse. Damage by the insect led to drying out and browning of turfgrass leaf because larva fed on cell sap of leaves and adult fed on leaf surface. A. congener damaged Zoysia japonica, Z. sinica, Conodon dactylon, and Poa pratensis when adults were artificially released into potted turfgrasses in the laboratory. In green house, A. congener damaged Z. japonica, Z. macrostachya, Z. matrella, Z. sinica, Conodon dactylon, and hybrid zoysiagrass. However, no damage symptoms were observed from the same turfgrass accessions in the nearby field of the greenhouse. Thus, the new coleopteran pest may be a warm-adapted pest for turfgrass, damaging turfgrass leaf only in warmer conditions.

  • This study was carried out to search for growth and quality -of turfgrass by Nitrogen source (Urea Ammonium sulphate) and organic matter, and to obtain methods of pr6per turfgrass management by the results. This experiment was conducted in turf field from 1988 to 1989. The results of this experiment was summarized as follows; 1.Without application of organic matter, turfgrass growth between urea and ammonium sulphate was not significant, however ammonium sulphate resulted in superior to urea in total dry weight when organic matter was applied. 2.The addition of organic matter showed significant effect on color rating and visible quality, and ammonium sulphate was higher quality than urea. 3.Shoot density increased, particularly in ammonium sulphate treatment, when organic matter was applied. 4.Rhizome and stolon were shown significant effect in urea treatment by the application of organic matter. 5.Surface soil pH was allowed to become slightly acid by the ammonium sulphate treatments, but soil acidity remained mostly unaffected when organic matter was supplied. 6.Total nitrogen of log tissue and organic matter content increased when organic matter w-as applied.

  • Zoysiagrass mite, Aceria zoysiae is one of the main turfgrass pests causing significant damage on zoysiagrass. In this study we investigated damage by zoysiagrass mite for the selection of zoysiagrass mite-resistance turfgrass individual in natural collected turfgrass isolates transplanted in genetic resources conservation area. In the results of investigation of 295 turfgrass isolates collected from Korea, damage level was different depending on turfgrass species and individuals. Zoysia japonica was highly damaged representing 97.6%, followed by hybrid zoysia and Z. sinica with damage percentages of 87.7% and 81.1% respectively. Additionally, 2 individuals of Z. macrostachya were also damaged by zoysiagrass mite. However several individuals were not damaged by zoysiagrass mite in green house and field. Damage by zoysiagrass mite was occurred from May and peak at after July in field. The study highlighted some important resistant turfgrass individuals which can be used in the management of zoysiagrass mite.

  • The purpose of this study is to select the appropriate herbicide, which is needed to control the bentgrass in kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis) fairway effectively. The best control of bentgrass was observed at /$0.3mL\m^2$ of dithiopyr applied on Kentucky bluegrass. A field experiment was conducted to determine the priming effects on seed germination of Kentucky bluegrass. Ground covering rates by turfgrass were investigated under field conditions for 70 treatments by thirty days after treatment. The solid matrix priming(SMP) treatments on Kentucky bluegrass reduced the number of days requited for emergence and improved final cover ratings. Primed seeds of Kentucky bluegrass (incubated for five days at $20^{\circ}C$) resulted in most rapid germination and covering rate.

  • Much attention has been given recently to solve the environmental contamination in golf courses Changing to culture practice rather than chemical practice that depends on pesticides and fertilizers is a hot issue in golf courses or grasslands. Organic soil conditioners improve soil-plant envirormental conditions rich in physical properties. In this study, measuring systems to evaluate soil conditioning effects were set up for on-site purpose. After establishing the methodology for evaluating soil conditioner effects, 2 kinds of organic conditioners were rested for examination. The systems for the methodology included a set of simulating equipment for field capacity, an impact type soil column compactor, and an infiltration-percolation system. Test results using the systems showed bulk density and infiltration rate of mixed soil were decreased at highter rates of conditioner, but total porocities were increased. Increased porocities were most capillary pore space which has a positive effect on soil water potential. The systems and methodology in this study seem to have an efficiency to measure the effects of soil conditioner on site purpose.
