Flow uniformity in aftertreatment system is an important factor in determining uniform catalytic reaction and filtration. In this study, variety types of DOC-DPF system design were analyzed to increase flow uniformity. For this analysis, ANSYS Fluent was used with porous media setup for DOC and DPF. Turbulent flow was modeled by standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model excepting porous media. Uniformity index was utilized to evaluate the flow uniformity quantitatively. Reference design showed low velocity region because two large vortex were generated before baffle. When radius of DOC-DPF system was increased, exhaust pressure acting on the inlet decreases and velocity distribution was shifted to one side. When inlet pipe was set to axial center of DOC-DPF system velocity distribution was symmetric. However, flow was not dissipated until the front end of DOC and showed higher uniformity index. When the volume of DOC was reduced while fixed volume of entire DOC-DPF system and baffle plate is located downstream of the DOC-DPF system, there was improvement in uniformity index.
A three-dimensional model was developed in order to simulate heat and fluid flow of a continuous casting billet. The model was coded with the general-purpose CFD program FIDAP, using the finite element method. The present model consists of 2 individual calculation schemes, named model 1 and model 2. Mold region only was calculated to check the pouring stream through submerged nozzle with model 1. Entire region, which consists of mold, secondary cooling, radiation cooling was calculated to predict crater end position, temperature profile and solid shell profile(model 2). Standard $k-{\bullet}\hat{A}$ turbulence model has been applied to simulate the turbulent flow induced by submerged nozzle. Enthalpy method was adopted for the latent heat of solidification. Fluid flow in mushy zone was treated using variable viscosity approach. The more casting speed and superheat increased, the more metallurgical length increased. The shell thickness at the mold exit is proved to be mainly controlled by superheat by the present simulation. It may be concluded that the present model can be successfully applied far the prediction of heat and fluid flow behavior in the continuous casting process.

To improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines, it is necessary to understand mixed air-fuel in-cylinder flow processes accurately at intake and compression strokes. There is experimental and numerical methods to analyse in-cylinder flow process. In numerical method, standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model with wall function was mostly adopted in in-cylinder flow process. But this type model was not efficiently predicted in the near wall region. Therefore in the present study, low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was adopted near the cylinder wall and standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model in other region. Also QUICK scheme was used for convective difference scheme. This study takes axisymmetric reciprocating model engine motored at 200rpm with a centrally located valve, incorporated 60 degree seat angie, and flat piston surface excluding inlet port. Because in-cylinder flow processes are undergoing unsteady and compressible, averaged cylinder pressure and inlet velocity at arbitrary crank angle are determined from thermodynamic analytic method and incylinder states at that crank angle are iteratively determined from the numerical analytic method.

Vortex Generators are used in heat exchanger to enhance the heat transfer of air side. 3-D numerical analysis is performed on heat transfer characteristics of a channel with trapezoidal vortex generator. We investigate the effects of vortex generators with two different inclined angles to flow direction which are forward and backward vortex generators. The thermal hydraulic performance such as Nu and pressure drop, is compared quantitatively. The results show that vortex generator enhances the heat transfer by developing boundary layers and secondary flow in the downstream. The downwash flow region corresponds to the maximum Nu, while the upwash flow region corresponds to Nu minimum. In the view of the heat transfer characteristics, FVG is better than BVG. However, when flow is turbulent as Re increases, the pressure drop for FVG is higher than that for BVG.
Control of drag force on a circular cylinder using a detached splitter plate is numerically studied for laminar flow. A splitter plate with the same length as the cylinder diameter(d) is placed horizontally in the wake region. Its position is described by the gap ratio(G/d), where G represents the gap between the cylinder base point and the leading edge of the plate. The drag varies with the gap ratio; it has the minimum value at a certain gap ratio for each Reynolds number. The drag sharply increases past the optimum gap ratio; this seems to be related to the sudden change in the bubble size in the wake region. This trend is consistent with the experimental observation currently available in case of turbulent flow. It is also found that the net drag coefficient significantly depends on the variation of base suction coefficient.
The thermohydrodynamic(THD) performance of a large tilting pad journal bearing in laminar and turbulent flow regions is investigated experimentally. The continuous shaft surface temperature, and bearing surface temperature are measured along with the shaft speed and the bearing load for various flow rates. It is observed that the shaft surface temperature is constant in the circumferential direction and increases with the increase of shaft speed in both low and high shaft speed region, however, there exist transition region where the shaft surface temperature decreases with the increase of shaft speed. When the turbulence occurs in the lubricant film, both the inlet and maximum bearing surface temperature steeply increase and the temperature gradient in the circumferential direction decreases.
In this study, we experimentally investigated that the optimization of pulsating jet to reduce the separated flow region behind the vertical fence. The vertical fence was submerged in the turbulent boundary layer in the circulating water channel and we applied phase averaged PIV method to measure the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence. One cycle of pulsating jet is divided into 20 phases and grabbed total 200 instantaneous velocity fields at each phase. The experiments were performed by varying the frequency, maximum jet velocity and the shape of pulsating jet wave. Pulsating jet was precisely made by piston-type pump controlled by the computer. The obtained results were compared with normal fence flow. From this study, we found there is the specific frequency which is effective in reducing the reattachment region.
Single phase pressure drops in micro tubes were investigated through an experimental measurement and a numerical simulation. Experimental Po was obtained in circular micro tubes with 87 and $118{\mu}m$ diameter with distilled water. Experiments were carried out in laminar flow region with varying the Re 15-450 for the $87{\mu}m$ diameter tubes and 60-1300 for the $118{\mu}m$ diameter tube. No early transition from laminar to turbulent flow was detected for the experimental range. The computational estimation of pressure drop in the $87{\mu}m$ diameter tube was performed with the aid of CFD software. Boundary conditions from experiments were used for the numerical simulation. The results of experimental and numerical studies showed a good agreement with the conventional macro theory.
BACKGROUND: 18F-sodium fluoride positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-NaF PET/CT) has been proven to be useful in identification of microcalcifications, which are stimulated by inflammation. Blood speckle imaging (BSI) is a new imaging technology used for tracking the flow of blood cells using transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). We evaluated the relationship between turbulent flow identified by BSI and inflammatory activity of the aortic valve (AV) as indicated by the 18F-NaF uptake index in moderate aortic stenosis (AS) patients. METHODS: This study enrolled 18 moderate AS patients diagnosed within the past 6 months. BSI within the aortic root was acquired using long-axis view TEE. The duration of laminar flow and the turbulent flow area ratio were calculated by BSI to demonstrate the degree of turbulence. The maximum and mean standardized uptake values (SUVmax, SUVmean) and the total microcalcification burden (TMB) as measured by 18F-NaF PET/CT were used to demonstrate the degree of inflammatory activity in the AV region. RESULTS: The mean SUVmean, SUVmax, and TMB were 1.90 ± 0.79, 2.60 ± 0.98, and 4.20 ± 2.18 mL, respectively. The mean laminar flow period and the turbulent area ratio were 116.1 ± 61.5 msec and 0.48 ± 0.32. The correlation between SUVmax and turbulent flow area ratio showed the most positive and statistically significant correlation, with a Pearson's correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.658 and a p-value of 0.014. CONCLUSIONS: The high degree of trans-aortic turbulence measured by BSI was correlated with severe AV inflammation.

For the extensive investigation of local heat/mass transfer on the near-tip surface of turbine blade, experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade. The turbine test section has a single stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has flat tip geometry and the mean tip clearance is about $2.5{\%}$ of the blade chord. Detailed mass transfer coefficient on the blade near-tip surface was obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The inlet flow Reynolds number based on chord length and incoming flow velocity is changed from $1.0{\times}10^{5}\;to\;2.3{\times}10^{5}.$ Extremely complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due, to complicated flow patterns, such as flow acceleration, laminarization, transition, separation bubble and tip leakage flow. Especially, the suction side surface of the blade has higher heat/mass transfer coefficients and more complex distribution than the pressure side surface, which is related to the leakage flow. For all the tested Reynolds numbers, the heat/mass transfer characteristics on the turbine blade are the similar. The overall averaged $Sh_{c}$ values are proportional to $Re_{c}^{0.5}$ on the stagnation region and the laminar flow region such as the pressure side surface. However, since the flow is fully turbulent in the near-tip region, the heat/mass transfer coefficients are proportional to $Re_{c}^{0.8}.$
