Large eddy simulation(LES) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the flow field at $Re_{\tau}$=180, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. A dynamic subgrid-scale model for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses was employed to close the governing equations. The mean flow properties, mean velocity profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The Reynolds number effects were observed in the higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor). Furthermore, the budgets of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on the turbulent structures.
The LES-based level-set flamelet model has been applied to analyze the turbulent propane/air premixed bluff-body flame with a highly wrinkled flame fronts. The present study has been motivated to investigate the interaction between the flame front and turbulent eddies. Special emphasis is given to study the effect of G equation filtering treatment on the precise structure of turbulent premixed flames as well as the effect of sub-grid scale (SGS) eddies on the wrinkling of the flame surface. The level-set/flamelet model has been adopted to account for the effect of turbulence-flame interaction as well as to properly capture the flame front. Numerical results indicate that the present LES-based level-set flamelet approach has a capability to realistically simulate the highly non-stationary turbulent premixed flame.
Turbulent mixed convection in heated vertical annulus is investigated using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) technique. The objective of this study is to find out the effect of buoyancy on turbulent mixed convection in heated vertical annulus. Downward and upward flows with bulk Reynolds number 8500, based on hydraulic diameter and mean velocity, have been simulated to investigate turbulent mixed convection by gradually increasing the effect of buoyancy. With increased heat flux, heat transfer coefficient first decreases and then increases in the upward flow due to the effect of buoyancy, but it gradually increases in downward flow. The mean velocity and temperature profiles can not be explained by the wall log laws due to the effect of buoyancy, too. All simulation results are in good quantitative agreement with existing numerical results and in good qualitative agreement with existing experimental results.

Turbulent characteristics of turbulent pulsating flows were studied experimentally in a square duct. Velocity waveforms, velocity profiles, and turbulent intensity of turbulent pulsating flow were investigated by using a hot-wire anemometer with data acquisition and a processing system in a square duct with a ratio of 1 ($40mm{\times}40mm$) to 4,000mm long. Turbulent components were shown to be larger in decelerating than in accelerating regions and also larger for a large phase of velocity and U'rms distribution of turbulent flow. The effect of velocity amplitude ratio does not exist for specified time [${\theta}(z^{\prime})$], amplitude ratio (${\mid}U^{\prime}_{rms.os.1}{\mid}/{\mid}U_{m.os.1}{\mid}$), and phase difference (${\Delta}U^{\prime}_{rms.os.1}-{\Delta}U_{m.os.1}$) in either turbulent oscillating or cross-sectional mean velocity components. The effect of dimensionless angular frequency for specified time [${\theta}(z^{\prime})$] can be disregarded because the dimensionless angular frequency does not affect the specified time. The velocity distributions of turbulent pulsating flows for various time-averaged Reynolds numbers are in approximate agreement with the velocity distributions for equivalent Reynolds numbers and 1/7th power law of steady flow.
Large Eddy Simulation(LES) of turbulent mass transfer in fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to study the effect of Reynolds number on the concentration fields at $Re_{\tau}=180$, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. Dynamic subgrid-scale models for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses and mass fluxes were employed to close the governing equations. Fully developed turbulent pipe flows with constant mass flux imposed at the wall are studied for Sc=0.71. The mean concentration profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The effects of Reynolds number on the turbulent mass transfer are identified in the higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor) and instantaneous concentration fields. The budgets of turbulent mass fluxes and concentration variance were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on turbulent mass transfer. Furthermore, to understand the correlation between near-wall turbulence structure and concentration fluctuation, we present an octant analysis in the vicinity of the pipe wall.
A numerical simulation of velocity and temperature fields and Nusselt number distributions is performed by using the algebraic stress model (ASM) for the velocity profiles and low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model and the algebraic heat flux model(AHFM) for turbulent heat transfer in a $180^{\circ}$ bend with a constant wall heat flux. In the low Reynolds number ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model, turbulent Prandtl number is modified by considering the streamline curvature effect and the non-equilibrium effect between turbulent kinetic energy production and dissipation rate. Every heat flux term presented in the transport equation of turbulent heat flux is reduced to algebraic expressions in a way similar to algebraic stress model. Also. in the wall region, low Reynods number algebraic heat flux model(AHFM) is applied.
A turbulent wake generated by a cylinder in nozzle contraction affects to the jet flow characteristics. In this study, a computational work to investigate the effect of the turbulent wake on two-dimensional subsonic jet was carried out with three different kinds of nozzle. Computations are applied to the two-dimensional unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations. Several kinds of turbulent models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. It was known that the wake flow enhanced the spread of the jet flow, compared with no wake flow condition. It was also found that the jet core is shortened by the wake flow developed from a control cylinder.
0The fields of turbomachinery and electrical generators provide many examples of flow through rotating internal passages. At the practicing Reynolds number, most of the flow motion is three dimensional and highly turbulent. The proper understanding for the characteristics of these turbulent flow is necessary for the design of thermo-fluid machinery of a good efficiency. The flow characteristics in the rotating duct with curvature are very complex in practice due to the curvature and rotational effect of the duct. The understanding of the effect of the curvature on the structure and rotational effect of the duct. The understanding of the effect of the curvature on the structure of turbulence in the curved passage and the characteristics of the flow in a rotating radial straight channel have been well studied separately by many workers. But the combined effects of curvature and rotation on the flow have not been well understood inspite of the importance of the phenomena in the practical design process. In this study, the characteristics of a developing turbulent flow in a square sectioned 90.deg. bend rotating at a constant angular velocity are measured by using hot-wire anemometer to seize the rotational effects on the flow characteristics. As the results of this study, centrifugal forces associated with the curvature of the bend and Coriolis forces and centripetal forces associated with the rotational affect directly both the mean motion and the turbulent fluctuations.
The effects of surface roughness on a spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer (TBL) were investigated by performing direct numerical simulations of TBLs over rough and smooth walls. The Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness was varied in the range $Re_{\theta}=300{\sim}1400$. The roughness elements used were periodically arranged two-dimensional spanwise rods, and the roughness height was $k=1.5{\theta}_{in}$, which corresponds to $k/{\delta}=0.045{\sim}0.125$. To avoid generating a rough wall inflow, which is prohibitively difficult, a step change from smooth to rough was placed $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. The spatially-developing characteristics of the rough-wall TBL were examined. Along the streamwise direction, the friction velocity approached a constant value and a self-preserving form of the turbulent stress was obtained. Introduction of the roughness elements affected the turbulent stress not only in the roughness sublayer but also in the outer layer. Despite the roughness-induced increase of the turbulent stress in the outer layer, the roughness had only a relatively small effect on the anisotropic Reynolds stress tensor in the outer layer. Inspection of the triple products of the velocity fluctuations revealed that introducing the roughness elements onto the smooth wall had a marked effect on vertical turbulent transport across the whole TBL. By contrast, good surface similarity in the outer layer was obtained for the third-order moments of the velocity fluctuations.
