  • Radio and X-ray observations of radio lobes in galaxy clusters indicate large energies stored in the magnetic fields in the radio lobes. These magnetic fields are undoubtedly produced and amplified by the accretion onto the central supermassive black hole. I review recent progress and remaining problems in our understanding of the ways how these magnetic fields can be produced and amplified in the accretion disks and what can be the limiting strength of the magnetic field. The major remaining issue is how ordered magnetic spirals (or jets) can emerge from the turbulent small scale magnetic fields produced by MRI. Another issue is the ratio of the axial to the azimuthal magnetic field in jets.

  • The application of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) in a curvilinear coordinate system to the flow around a square cylinder is presented. In order to obtain sufficient resolution near the side of the cylinder, we use an O-type grid. Even with a curvilinear coordinate system, it is difficult to avoid the numerical oscillation arising in high-Reynolds-number flows past a bluff body, without using an extremely fine grid used. An upwind scheme has the effect of removing the numerical oscillations, but, it is accompanied by numerical dissipation that is a kind of an additional sub-grid scale effect. Firstly, we investigate the effect of numerical dissipation on the computational results in a case where turbulent dissipation is removed in order to clarify the differences between the effect of numerical dissipation. Next, the applicability and the limitations of the present method, which combine the dynamic SGS model with acceptable numerical dissipation, are discussed.

  • Numerical analysis code has been developed for investigating the combustion characteristics in a slab heater of a steel mill company. Unsteady full 3-Dimensional behaviour can be predicted with the code. Premixed flame model is adopted for combustion phenomena. And eddy dissipation model is used for turbulent flow and non gray FVM method for radiation. Slab movement can be fully traced from entrance into heater until it's exit and computation is performed during that period. Code was validated by comparing the calculation results with experimental ones for the bench scale heater.

  • The present work was performed to investigate the thermal and hydraulic characteristics of flow inside the plain and turbulator flat tubes for the automobile application. The pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient at laminar, transition and turbulent regimes were studied experimentally and numerically. The flow transition was confirmed by flow visualization and quantitative data. It is proposed equations for the friction and heat transfer coefficient in the fully developed laminar flow inside rectangular tube as function of aspect ratio.

  • As a basic study of the aero-acoustic noise, Large eddy simulations were carried out for a fixed circular cylinder at Renolds number (Re=$9.0\times10^4$) using commercial CFD code, FLUENT. The subgrid-scale turbulent viscosity was modeled by Smagorinsky-Lilly model adapted to structured meshes. The results of analysis showed that time-averaged value, $\bar{C}_D$ is approximately 1.47 which is considerably adjacent with the experimentally measured value of 1.32 in comparison to the values performed by previous researchers. It is observed that there are the very small acoustic pressure fluctuation with the same frequency of the Karman vortex street.

  • In this paper, Gauss filter function is used to filter the N-S equation and the subgrid-scale Reynold stresses model is introduced to deduce the practical form of LES equation for 2-D case for flow calculation of hydraulic machine. Then the LES equation and its discrete form in computational field are obtained in the body-fitted coordinate system and the numerical calculation program is built. The incompressible turbulent flow in double-flow-conduits-sewage pump impeller is computed by using the abovementioned program, and then the distribution rules of velocity and pressure in flow field are obtained. Based on this, the designs of double-flow-conduits-sewage pump impeller are optimized.

  • A parallelized FEM code based on domain decomposition method has been recently developed for a large scale computational fluid dynamics. A 4-step splitting finite element algorithm is adopted for unsteady computation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, and Smagorinsky LES(Large Eddy Simulation) model is chosen for turbulent flow computation. Both METIS and MPI library are used for domain partitioning and data communication between processors respectively. Tiburon of Hyundai-motor is chosen as the computational model at $Re=7.5{\times}10^{5}$, which is based on the car height. It is confirmed that the drag under road condition is smaller than that of wind tunnel condition.

  • Transport of a scalar quantity, such as chemical concentration or temperature, is important in many engineering applications and environmental flows. Here we report on results obtained from the large eddy simulations of flow and concentration fields inside the tank performed using a spectral multi-domain technique. The computations were driven by specifying the impeller-induced flow at the blade tip radius (Yoon et al. $^{(1)}$). This study focused on the concentration development at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank operated under turbulent conditions. The main objective of the work presented here is to study the large-scale mixing structure at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank by using the large eddy simulation. The time sequence of concentration and flow fields shows the flow dependency of the concentration development. The presence of spatial inhomogenieties is detailed by observing the time variation of local concentration at different positions.

  • The snapshot method is introduced to approximate the coherent structures of planar jet flow. The numerical simulation of instantaneous flow field is analyzed by SIMPLE algorithm. An ensemble of realizations is collected using a sampling condition that corresponds to the passage of a large scale vortex at positions 4 and 6 diameters downstream from the nozzle. With snapshot mothod we could treat the data efficiently and approximate coherent structures inhered in the planar jet flow successfully 94% of total turbulent kinetic energy with 10 terms of Karhunen-Loeve expansions. Finally, In accordance with the recent trend to try to explain and model turbulence phenomena with the existence of coherent structures, in the present study, we express the underlying coherent structures of planar jet flow in the minimum number of modes by calculating Karhunen-Loeve expansions in order to improve to understanding of jet flow and to make the information storage and management in computers easier.

  • The present work investigates the effect on the flow-induced vibrations of the lay-up sequence of composite laminated axisymmetric structures, using an hybrid approach based on a wave finite element and a transfer matrix method. The structural vibrations, under deterministic distributed pressure loads, diffuse acoustic field and turbulent boundary layer excitations, are analysed and compared. A multi-scale approach is used for the dynamic analysis of finite structures, using an elementary periodic subsystem. Different flow regimes and shell curvatures are analysed and the computational efficiency is also discussed.
