The Effect of Eccentricity on Aerated Oil in High-Speed Journal Bearing

  • The influence of aerated oil on a high-speed journal bearing is examined by classical thermohydrodynamic lubrication theory coupled with analytical models for viscosity and density of air-oil mixture in fluid-film bearing. Convection to the walls and mixing with supply oil and re-circulating oil are considered. With changing eccentricity ratio, it is investigated the effects of air bubbles on the performance of a high-speed plain journal bearing. Just at the moderate eccentricity ratios, even if the involved aeration levels are not so severe and the entrained air bubble sizes are not so small, it is found that the bearing load and friction force may be changed so visibly for the high speed bearing operation.

  • PW206C 터보샤프트엔진을 장착한 스마트무인기의 엔진베이 냉각을 목적으로 하는 이젝터를 설계하였다. 이젝터의 기하학적 형상과 유량비의 관계를 근사적 해석식을 사용하여 계산하므로서 이젝터의 형상을 설계하고 성능을 분석하였다. 근사적 해석식의 결과를 검증하기 위해 Fluent 코드를 이용하여 난류 유동해석을 수향하였다. Fluent 코드로 계산한 유량은 근사적 해석식으로 계산한 결과와는 차이를 보였으며, 이것은 이젝터 내부에서 유동의 충분한 혼합이 이루어지지 못하기 때문이다.

  • Transport of a scalar quantity, such as chemical concentration or temperature, is important in many engineering applications and environmental flows. Here we report on results obtained from the large eddy simulations of flow and concentration fields inside the tank performed using a spectral multi-domain technique. The computations were driven by specifying the impeller-induced flow at the blade tip radius (Yoon et al. $^{(1)}$). This study focused on the concentration development at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank operated under turbulent conditions. The main objective of the work presented here is to study the large-scale mixing structure at different molecular diffusivities in a stirred tank by using the large eddy simulation. The time sequence of concentration and flow fields shows the flow dependency of the concentration development. The presence of spatial inhomogenieties is detailed by observing the time variation of local concentration at different positions.

  • An ejector is designed for the purpose of engine bay cooling and exhaust gas cooling. The primary flow of the ejector is the exhaust gas of the turboshaft engine. The mass flow of secondary flow is calculated by using the approximate analytic equation. For the purpose of verification of approximate method, comparison is made with the results of Navier-Stokes turbulent flow solution. According to the results of CFD, the mixing of two flows is incomplete due to the short length of mixing duct.

  • The flowfield of transverse jet in a supersonic air stream subjected to shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions is simulated numerically by Generalized Taylor Galerkin(GTG) finite element methods. Effects of turbulence are taken into account with a two-equation $(k-\varepsilon)$ model with a compressibility correction. Injection pressures and slot widths are varied in the present study. Pressure, separation extents, and penetration heights are compared with experimental data. Favorable comparisons with experimental measurements are demonstrated.

Characteristics of Stability and Intensity of Vertical Transfer in the Western Channel of the Korea Strait

  • Structure of thermocline, characteristics of stability and intensity of vertical transfer have been studied with hourly oceanographic data in each layers on Line 207 from 1968 to 1969. It is found that a typical thermocline is formed at depths of 10 to 50 meters in summer and early autumn and its core is located near depths of 25 meters. The maximum diffusion coefficient of vertical turbulent is found to be 140$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec at the surface layer(i.e., 0-10 meters), while the minimum is 5$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec at depths of 25 meters, consistent with characteristics of stability and structure of thermocline layers. Our computed diffusion coefficient and stability indicate that the mixing hardly takes place below depths of 80 meters during summer and early autumn, but for the rest of the season mixing could move up to the depth of 50 meters. It appears that the Western Channel of the Korea Strait consist of three different water masses during summer and autumn, and for the rest of the season, two kinds are present.

  • Computational study has been performed to observe the flow characteristics of combustion chamber for geometrical modification in municipal solid waste incinerator. A series of geometrical modification has been carried out as an attempt to reduce the size of recirculation zone, to obtain uniform flow field in the secondary combustion chamber and to improve the mixing of combustion gas. Two dimensional non-reacting turbulent flow has been studied as the first step to get such goals and the result of design optimization is presented. In addition, three dimensional non-reacting and reacting flow analyses were performed to verify the validity of two dimensional approach.

  • The present study is aimed to achieve dynamic visualization from the in-house 3-D stereoscopic PIV to represent quantitative flow information such as time-resolved 3-D velocity distribution, vorticity, turbulent intensity or Reynolds stresses and so on. One of the application of the present study is Leading edge extension(LEX) flow appearing on modern delta wing aircraft. The other is mixing flow in stirring tank used in industry field. LEX in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modern air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present method resolves also the complicated flow patterns of two type impellers rotating in stirring vessel. Flow quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing visualization. And it makes the easy understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics of the typical industrial mixers.

  • The relationship between velocity, viscosity, diffusion coefficient, mass transfer coefficient and characteristic length and mass transfer data can be correlated by dimensionless relationship in electrolytic process. The performance of dyestuff removal was decreased as the flow rate of electrolyte was increased. It was due to the effect of retention time decreasing was superior to that of turbulent inlet mixing. Sh/Sc$\^$1/3/ vs Re plot for Al flat electrode did not showed the general tendency of the relationship between Sh/Sc$\^$1/3/ and Re. It can be thought that flow rate was not sufficiently high to increase the effect of mixing.

  • An experimental investigation on the reduction of nitrogen oxide emission from swirling, turbulent diffusion flames was conducted using multi air staged combustor, The combustor utilizes swirler to dampen fuel/air mixing, allowing an extended residence time for fuel pyrolysis and fuel-N conversion chemistry in an locally fuel-rich environment prior to burnout. This process also allow to reduce thermal NOx formation to lessen the temperature of reaction zone. The aerodynamic process therefore emulates the conventional staged combustion process, but without the need for the physically separate fuel-rich and -lean stages. Parametric studies on the ratios of each staged air and droplet size were carried out the feasibility of fuel/air mixing for low NOx combustion with diesel and pyridine mixed diesel fuel oil.
