  • The heat transfer characteristics of the drag reducing polymer solutions are investigated experimentally in the thermal entrance region of circular tube flows. Fluids used in experiments are the aqueous solutions of high molecular polymer, polyacrylamide Separan AP-273 and the range of polymer concentrations is from 20 to 1000 wppm. Two stainless steel tubes with inside diameter 8.5mm(L/D=712) and 10.3mm(L/D=1160) are used for the heat transfer flow loops. The flow loop is set up to measure friction factors and heat transfer coefficients of test sections in two different modes; the recirculating flow system and once-through flow system. The test tubes are heated directly by electricity to apply the constant heat flux boundary conditions to the wall. Three different types of adaptors are used to observe the effects of the upstream flow conditions of the heat transfer test sections. The viscosity and characteristic relaxation time of the test fluids circulating in the flow system are measured by the capillary tube viscometer and falling ball viscometer at regular time intervals. The installed adaptors exhibit slight effect on the entrance heat transfer of Newtonian fluid. However, no noticeable effects are observed for the entrance heat transfer of the drag reducing fluids. The order of magnitude of the thermal entrance lengths of the drag reducing fluids which follow the minimum friction asymptote is much longer than that of Newtonian fluids in turbulent flows. A new dimensionless parameter, the viscoelastic Graetz number, is defined and all the experimental data are recasted in terms of the viscoelastic Graetz number. The local Nusselt number of the viscoelastic fluids is represented as a function of flow behavior index n and the viscoelastic Graetz number. As degradation continues the viscosity and the characteristic relaxation time of the testing fluids decrease. Weissenberg number defined by the relaxation time and D/V appears to be a proper dimensionless parameter in describing degradation effects on heat transfer of the viscoelastic fluids.

  • The Rondonia Boundary Layer Experiment (RBLE-II) was conceived to collect data the atmospheric boundary layer over two representative surface in the Amazon region of Brazil; tropical forest and a deforested, pasture area. The present study deals with the observations of atmospheric boundary layer growth and decay. Although the atmospheric boundary layer measurements made in RBLE-II were not made simultaneously over the two different surface types, some insights can be gained from analysing and comparing with their structure. The greater depth of the nocturnal boundary layer at the forest site may be due to influence of mechanical turbulence. The pasture site is aerodynamically smoother and so the downward turbulent diffusion will be much pasture than over the forest. The development of the convective boundary layer is stronger over the pasture than over the forest. The influence of the sensible heat flux is important but may be not enough to explain the difference completely. It seems that energy advection may occur from the wet and colder(forest) to the dry and warmer area(pasture), rapidly breaking up the nocturnal inversion. Such advection can explain the abrupt growth of the convective boundary layer at the pasture site during the early morning.

  • Pressure drops were measured for the flow boiling process within horizontal rectangular channels. The gap between the upper and the lower plates of each channel ranges from 0.4 to 2mm while the channel width being fixed to 20mm. Refrigerant 113 was used as the test fluid. The mass flux ranges from 50 to 200kg/㎡s and the channel walls were uniformly heated up to 15kW/㎡. The quality range covers from 0.15 to 0.75. The present experimental conditions coincide with the operating conditions of compact heat exchangers in which the liquid and gas flows are laminar and turbulent. The measured results were well represented by the two-phase frictional multiplier of Lee (2001) which has been developed for air-water two-phase flows within the deviation of $\pm$20%.

  • Buildings in the city acts as a cause of distorted wind direction, wind speed, causing the stagnation of the air flow. In the recent trend of climate change can not but consider the temperature rise of the urbanization. This study was aimed to analyze the thermal comfort of planetary boundary layer in different artificial constructions areas which has a direct impact on urban climate, and estimating the warming phenomena. Envi-met model was used to consider the urban structure associated with urban growth in order to precisely determine the impact of the building on the city weather condition. The analyzed values of thermal comfort index were temperature, wind speed, horizontal and vertical turbulent diffusivity. In particular, analysis of the PPD(Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied) represents the human thermal comfort. In this study, by adjusting the arrangement and proportion of the top floor building in the urban it was found that the inflow of the fresh air and cooling can be derived low PPD. Vertical heat flux amount of the city caused by climate change was a factor to form a high potential temperature in the city and the accumulation of cold air does not appear near the surface. Based on this, to make the city effectively respond to climate change may require a long-term restructuring of urban spatial structure and density management.

  • For a comparative evaluation of three turbulence models in the analyses of thermal discharge behavior into a crossflow, a 2-dimemsional near-field numerical model is developed. The selected models are k-$\varepsilon$ and k-ι turbulence models as a 2-equation turbulence model and a 4-equation turbulence model in which the transport equations for mean of the temperature fluctuation squared and its dissipation rate for the consideration of buoyancy production and turbulent heat flux terms are added to a k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. The developed models are applied to a steady flow in an open channel with simple geometry and the numerical results agree with the existing experimental data. Numerical results of buoyancy induced gravitational lateral spreading by 4-equation turbulence model agree with the experimental data better than those of 2-quation turbulence models. The flow patterns by 4 and 2-equation turbulence models are similar.

  • A record-breaking high surface air temperature of 41.0℃ was observed on 1 August 2018 at Hongcheon, South Korea. In this study, to quantitatively determine the formation mechanism of this extremely high surface air temperature, particularly considering the contributions of the foehn and the foehnlike wind, observational data from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model were utilized. In the backward trajectory analysis, trajectories of 100 air parcels were released from the surface over Hongcheon at 1600 LST on 1 August 2018. Among them, the 47 trajectories (38 trajectories) are tracked back above (below) heights of 1.4 km above mean sea level at 0900 LST 31 July 2018 and are defined as upper (lower) routes. Lagrangian energy budget analysis shows that for the upper routes, adiabatic heating (11.886 × 103 J kg-1) accounts for about 77% of the increase in the thermal energy transfer to the air parcels, while the rest (23%) is diabatic heating (3.650 × 103 J kg-1). On the other hand, for the lower routes, adiabatic heating (6.111 × 103 J kg-1) accounts for about 49% of the increase, the rest (51%) being diabatic heating (6.295 × 103 J kg-1). Even though the contribution of the diabatic heating to the increase in the air temperature rather varies according to the routes, the contribution of the diabatic heating should be considered. The diabatic heating is caused by direct heating associated with surface sensible heat flux and heating associated with the turbulent mixing. This mechanism is the Type 4 foehn described in Takane and Kusaka (2011). It is concluded that Type 4 foehn wind occurs and plays an important role in the extreme event on 1 August 2018.

  • This study examines the role of the relative wind (RW) effect (wind relative to ocean current) in the regional ocean circulation and extratropical storm track in the south Indian Ocean. Comparison of two high-resolution regional coupled model simulations with and without the RW effect reveals that the most conspicuous ocean circulation response is the significant weakening of the overly energetic anticyclonic standing eddy off Port Elizabeth, South Africa, a biased feature ascribed to upstream retroflection of the Agulhas Current (AC). This opens a pathway through which the AC transports the warm and salty water mass from the subtropics, yielding marked increases in sea surface temperature (SST), upward turbulent heat flux (THF), and meridional SST gradient in the Agulhas retroflection region. These thermodynamic and dynamic changes are accompanied by the robust strengthening of the local low-tropospheric baroclinicity and the baroclinic wave activity in the atmosphere. Examination of the composite life cycle of synoptic-scale storms subjected to the high-THF events indicates a robust strengthening of the extratropical storms far downstream. Energetics calculations for the atmosphere suggest that the baroclinic energy conversion from the basic flow is the chief source of increased eddy available potential energy, which is subsequently converted to eddy kinetic energy, providing for the growth of transient baroclinic waves. Overall, the results suggest that the mechanical and thermal air-sea interactions are inherently and inextricably linked together to substantially influence the extratropical storm tracks in the south Indian Ocean.

  • The formation and structure of tidal front in the eastern part of the Yellow Sea were studied based on the oceanographic data compiled during the periods of $1982{\sim}1983$ and $1966{\sim}1970$. Well-defined fronts occurring in the Yellow Sea in summer mark the boundary between the stratified and vertically mixed regimes. The occurrence of vertically mixed regimes may be interpreted in terms of available turbulent kinematic energy of tidal currents. The tidal frontal regions were determined by horizontal gradients of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, and were verified by water colour and transparency. In summer the tidal fronts were found at depths of $15{\sim}25m$ at about 20 miles from the shore. Potential energy of vortical stratification in the tidal frontal region was 10 $Joule/m^3$. The stratification parameter in the frontal region computed from the numerical tidal model was $S_p=1.0.$ Tidal front is formed in regions with $S_p=1-1.5,$ if surface heat flux are constant. Waters in the stratified region have the layer structures of wind-mixed surface layer, thermocline and tidal-mixed bottom layer. In the vertically mixed region, however, sea water is nearly homogeneous. in winter no distinctive tidal front was seen.
