Accurate turbulence modeling is an essential prerequisite for the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in Wind Engineering. At present the most popular turbulence model for general engineering flow problems is the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model. Models such as this are based on the isotropic eddy viscosity concept and have well documented shortcomings (Murakami et al. 1993) for flows encountered in Wind Engineering. This paper presents an objective assessment of several available alternative models. The CFD results for the flow around a full-scale (6 m) three-dimensional surface mounted cube in an atmospheric boundary layer are compared with recently obtained data. Cube orientations normal and skewed at $45^{\circ}$ to the incident wind have been analysed at Reynolds at Reynolds number of greater than $10^6$. In addition to turbulence modeling other aspects of the CFD procedure are analysed and their effects are discussed.

A CFD analysis has been made for fully developed turbulent flows in a triangular bare rod bundle with pitch to diameter ratio (P/D) of 1.123. The nonlinear turbulence models predicted the turbulencedriven secondary flow in the triangular subchannel. The nonlinear quadratic $\kappa-\omega$ models by Speziale and Myong-Kasagi predicted turbulence structure in the rod bundle fairly well. The nonlinear quadratic and cubic $\kappa-\omega$ models by Shih et al. and Craft et al. showed somewhat weaker anisotropic turbulence. The differential Reynolds stress model appeared to overpredict the turbulence anisotropy in the rod bundle.
In this study, we calculated arc discharges and flow characteristics driven by arcs in a thermal puffer chamber, which is one of most outstanding high-voltage interrupters, for understanding the complex physics and the probability of thermal breakdown. The four main parts of arc model for this virtual-reality are radiation, PTFE ablation, Cu evaporation, and turbulence. Among these important parts the turbulence model can be critical to the reliability of computation results during the whole arcing history because the plasma flow is affected by high heat energy and mass momentum. Two turbulence models, the Prandtl's mixing length model and the standard $k-\varepsilon$ model, are applied for these calculations and are compared with pressure-rise inside chamber and arc voltage between the contacts as well as flow characteristics near current zero.
Flow velocity was measured using a hot wire anemometer. Turbulence intensity was in proportion to mean flow velocity regardless of swirl velocity. And integral length scale has proportional relation with swirl velocity regardless of measurement position. Flame speed calculated by radius of visualized flame was increased and then decreased according to lapse of time from spark. Maximum flame speed was increased according to increase of turbulence intensity. Burning speed and flame transport effect increased with increase of swirl velocity, but ratio of burning speed to flame speed decreased with increased of swirl velocity. Mass fraction burned versus volume fraction burned was increased in proportion to the increase of turbulence intensity, caused by increase of combustion promotion effect according to increase of turbulence intensity and scale.
An analytic approach is attempted to predict the amplification of turbulence in compressible flows experiencing one-dimensional and axisymmetric bulk dilatation. The variations of vortex radius and vorticity are calculated, and then the amplification of turbulence is obtained from them by tracking three representative vortices. For a one-dimensionally compressed flow, the present analysis slightly underestimates the amplification of velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy, relative to that of rapid distortion theory in the solenoidal limit. For an axisymmetrically distorted flow, the amplification of velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy depend not only on the density ratio but also on the ratio of streamwise mean velocities, which represents streamwise vortex contraction/stretching. In all flows considered, the amplification of turbulence is dictated by the mean density ratio. In the axisymmetric flow, streamwise vortex stretching/contraction, however, alters the amplification slightly.
Predictive behaviors by the extended k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are compared. Grid dependency is tested with the H-type grid as well as the O-type grid. Computations have been performed on a circular-to-rectangular transition duct. The Reynolds number is 390,000 based on the bulk velocity at the inlet. The computed axial velocity contours, transverse velocity profiles, static pressure contours, peripheral skin friction coefficient, peripheral wall static pressure distributions and turbulence kinetic energy have been compared with experimental results. The computed results than those obtained with the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Comparing to the computed results obtained with the H-type grid and O-type grid, those with H-type grid seem to agree well with experimental results.
Present paper deals with turbulence-airfoil interaction noise and mainly investigates the effects of airfoil thickness on the broadband noise spectrum. The acoustic power radiation from an airfoil is predicted using high-order time-domain method, which is based on the computational aeroacoustic technique solving the linear Euler equations. The homogeneous and isotropic turbulence is generated by utilizing the synthetic turbulence modeling based on random particle method. The airfoils taken into consideration are a flat-plate and a NACA0012 airfoil aligned with uniform mean flow. The effects of airfoil thickness on the radiated inflow turbulence noise are investigated by comparing acoustic power spectrum predicted for each airfoil. The comparison of acoustic power spectrum reveals that the airfoil thickness significantly contributes the high frequency noise reduction.
This study is aimed to analyze the hydrodynamic characteristics of the cage net in the circulating water channel. It visualized wake flows using a PIV (paricle imaging velocimetry) and analyzed the flow velocity distribution. In addition, the vorticity and turbulence intensity were analyzed from the wake flow distribution and compared changes by flow velocity. Results showed that the average turbulence intensity in the circulating water channel was very stable showing less than 1% in the range between 0.2 and 0.8 m/s. The drag coefficient affecting to the netting was estimated to be 1.35. The flow decreasing rate of the wake in the middle of the netting was 2.1% at the range of 0.2 m/s and it was constant at 6.6-6.9% over the range of 0.4 m/s irrespective of velocity increases. Finally, the change of turbulence intensity by netting and knot mesh could be confirmed. These results can be utilized as a basic information for the future research of flow characteristics by fishing nets and meshes.
In this study, the effects of freestream turbulence intensity on laminar-turbulent transition of separated shear layers in the wake of a circular cylinder are investigated using an immersed boundary method and LES. It is shown that the present numerical results without freestream turbulence for Re=3,900 based on bulk mean velocity and the cylinder diameter are in good agreement with other authors' experimental observations and numerical results, verifying our numerical methodology. Then a 'prescribed power spectrum' method is imposed to generate isotropic turbulence at the inlet of the computational domain at each time step. The principal effects of freestream turbulence intensity on flow statistics are investigated for Re=3,900. Statistical study reveals that the Reynolds stresses in the near-wake region gradually increase, and transition occurs further upstream, as the turbulence intensity increases. On the other hand, the bubble size behind the cylinder decreases as the turbulence intensity increases, which indicates that the freestream turbulence helps mean velocity be quickly recovered.
This article described that a high Reynolds number version of a turbulence model was modified by using drag reduction to analyze the turbulent flows of non-Newtonian fluid with visco-elastic viscosity and it was applied hemodynamics which was representative of visco-elastic fluid. The turbulence characteristics of visco-elastic fluid was expanded viscous sublayer region and buffer layer region by drag reduction phenomenon and also Newtonian turbulence models does not predict because viscosity was related with shear rate of fluid flow. Hence numerical simulation using a modified turbulence model was conducted under the same conditions that were applied to obtain the experiment results and previous turbulence models and then the numerical investigation of turbulent blood flow in the stenosed artery bifurcation under periodic acceleration of the human body.
