In underground spaces including nuclear waste repository, prediction of air quantity, temperature/humidity and pollutant concentration is utmost important for space construction and management during the normal state as well as for determining the measures in emergency cases such as underground fires. This study aims at developing a model for underground space environment which has capabilities to take into account the effects of autocompression for the natural ventilation head calculation, to find the optimal location and size of fans and regulators, to predict the temperature and humidity by calculating the convective heat transfer coefficient and the sensible and latent heat transfer rates, and to estimate the pollutant levels throughout the network. The temperature/humidity prediction model was applied to a military storage underground space and the relative differences of dry and wet temperatures were 1.5 ~ 2.9% and 0.6 ~ 6.1%, respectively. The convection-based pollutant transport model was applied to two different vehicle tunnels. Coefficients of turbulent diffusion due to the atmospheric turbulence were found to be 9.78 and 17.35$m^2$/s, but measurements of smoke and CO concentrations in a tunnel with high traffic density and under operation of ventilation equipment showed relative differences of 5.88 and 6.62% compared with estimates from the convection-based model. These findings indicate convection is the governing mechanism for pollutant diffusion in most of the tunnel-type spaces.
Ecohydraulics is a newly born discipline in the early 1990s by the interdisciplinary approach combined with aquatic ecology in one discipline and geomorphology, hydrology, and fluid hydrodynamics in another. Major areas of ecohydraulics can be delineated as habitat hydraulics (including environmental flow), vegetation hydraulics, eco-corridor hydraulics, eutrophication hydraulics, and ecological restoration hydraulics. Reviews of relevant international journals and literature reveal that ecohydraulics has remained in the limited areas of fish response, hydraulic modeling, and physical habitat response. It has not reached a truly interdisciplinary stage. Literature reviews in Korea reveal that only 3% of the total number of the papers listed in the Journal of KWRA during the last 24 years is related to ecohydraulics. It is about 20% of the total listed in the Journal of Ecology and Resilient Infrastructure. Most of those related to ecohydraulics in Korea concern vegetation hydraulics, habitat hydraulics, and ecological restoration hydraulics. In contrast, dynamic flow modeling areas, including turbulence, fauna motion simulation, and eutrophication hydraulics, are not found. Areas of further research in ecohydraulics in Korea may be specified as follows: 1) environmental flows adapted to the traits of the rivers in Korea, 2) development of the dynamic floodplain vegetation models (DFVM) to assess the changes from the white river to green river, 3) development of the eutrophication hydraulic model to predict the freshwater algal blooms, and 4) development of the models to evaluate the physical, chemical, and biological impacts of the stream restoration, decommissioning and removal of old weirs or small dams.

The flow in the meandering channel is characterized by the spiral motion of secondary currents that typically cause the erosion along the outer bank. Hydraulic structures, such as spur dike and groyne, are commonly installed on the channel bottom near the outer bank to mitigate the strength of secondary currents. This study is to investigate the effects of submerged vanes installed in a $90^{\circ}$ meandering channel on the development of secondary currents through three-dimensional numerical modeling using the hybrid RANS/LES method for turbulence and the volume of fluid method, based on OpenFOAM open source toolbox, for capturing the free surface at the Froude number of 0.43. We employ the second-order-accurate finite volume methods in the space and time for the numerical modeling and compare numerical results with experimental measurements for evaluating the numerical predictions. Numerical results show that the present simulations well reproduce the experimental measurements, in terms of the time-averaged streamwise velocity and secondary velocity vector fields in the bend with submerged vanes. The computed flow fields reveal that the streamwise velocity near the bed along the outer bank at the end section of bend dramatically decrease by one third of mean velocity after the installation of vanes, which support that submerged vanes mitigate the strength of primary secondary flow and are helpful for the channel stability along the outer bank. The flow between the top of vanes and the free surface accelerates and the maximum velocity of free surface flow near the flow impingement along the outer bank increases about 20% due to the installation of submerged vanes. Numerical solutions show the formations of the horseshoe vortices at the front of vanes and the lee wakes behind the vanes, which are responsible for strong local scour around vanes. Additional study on the shapes and arrangement of vanes is required for mitigate the local scour.

This study is to investigate the industrial boiler which can be significantly affected by the restriction of NOx. Note that the application of SNCR method to industrial boiler is usually blown as not feasible due to the insufficient residence time for proper mixing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the SNCR system application to the industrial boiler, which produces 40 tons of steam per hour using heavy oil. For the industrial boiler with 3-D rectangular coordinate, the general coding are made fur various turbulence modeling such as turbulent flow, turbulent fuel combustion, thermal NO formation and destruction together with the NO reaction with reducing agents. Further, the incorporation of drop trajectory model is successfully made in 3-D rectangular coordinate with Lagrangian frame and the main swirl burner effect on the characteristics of flame is considered. As expected a short flame was created and thereby NOx is removed more efficiently by increasing the proper region of temperature for NO reduction reaction. The validation of program was made successfully by the comparison of experimental data. Based on the reliable calculation results, the SNCR method in a industrial boiler shows the possibility as one of viable NO reduction method by the use of well designed mixing air of reducing agent.

The rapid mixing process has been considered as an important step in water treatment. Since the coagulant dispersion into raw water by rapid mixer can influence on the flocculation and filtration efficiency, many researchers have developed various devices and mixing methodologies. Until now, they focused attention on only coagulant dose, pH. rotating velocity and G value but overlooked the real turbulent flow and mixer geometry in rapid mixer. Therefore this paper questions the significance of turbulent flows in rapid mixer and focuses on the analysis of turbulent fluid in various mixer geometry with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). The results of the jar-tests using various geometries indicate that the turbidity removal rate in a circular jar without baffle is higher than that of a circular with baffle. And the turbidity removal rate in Hudson jar is also founded to be higher than in the circular jar with baffle. The CFD simulation of velocity fields in jar demonstrates that the differences of removal rates among the various geometries are largely due to the formation of the different turbulent fluids fields with different geometries.

sump pump is a system that draws in water that is stored in a dam or reservoir. They are used to pump large amounts of water for cooling systems in large power plants, such as thermal and nuclear plants. However, if the flow and sump pump ratio are small, the flow rate increases around the inlet port. This causes a turbulent vortex or swirl flows. The turbulent flow reduces the performance and can cause failure. Various methods have been devised to solve the problem, but a correct solution has not been found for low water level. The most efficient solution is to install an anti-vortex device (AVD) or increase the length of the sump inlet, which makes the flow uniform. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the flow characteristics in a sump pump for different sump inlet lengths and AVD types. Modeling was performed in three stages based on the pump intake, sump, and pump. For accurate analysis, the grid was made denser in the intake part, and the grid for the sump pump and AVD were also dense. 1.2-1.5 million grid elements were generated using ANSYS ICEM-CFD 14.5 with a mixture of tetra and prism elements. The analysis was done using the SST turbulence model of ANSYS CFX14.5, a commercial CFD program. The conditions were as follows: H.W.L 6.0 m, L.W.L 3.5, Qmax 4.000 kg/s, Qavg 3.500 kg/s Qmin 2.500 kg/s. The results of analysis by the vertex angle and velocity distribution are as follows. A sump pump with an Ext E-type AVD was accepted at a high water level. However, further studies are needed for a low water level using the Ext E-type AVD as a base.
This study aims to investigating the effect of Schmidt number (${\sigma}_c$) on sediment suspension and hydrodynamics calculation. The range of ${\sigma}_c$ is also studied based on the flux Richardson number ($Ri_f$) and gradient Richardson number ($Ri_g$). Numerical experiments are carried out by 1 dimensional vertical model. Both cohesive and non-cohesive sediments are tested under the conditions of pure current and oscillatory flow. The turbulence damping effect due to sediment suspension is examined considering ${\sigma}_c$ as a constant for the damping effect. The results of this study show the consistent effect of ${\sigma}_c$ on sediment suspension regardless of hydrodynamic condition. It is also found that the model overestimates the flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy when the damping effect is not considered. Under the conditions of $Ri_f$ and $Ri_g$ causing density stratification, it is known that the vertical mixing of sediment is reasonably calculated in the range of ${\sigma}_c$ from 0.3 to 0.5.

Three-dimensional structures of large ocean rings in the Gulf Stream region are investigated using the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). Numerically simulated flow structures around four selected cyclonic and anticyclonic rings are compared with two different horizontal resolutions: $1/12^{\circ}$ and $1/48^{\circ}$. The vertical distributions of Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs) are analyzed using Finite Size Lyapunov Exponent (FSLE) and Okubo-Weiss parameters (OW). Curtain-shaped FSLE ridges are found in all four rings with extensions of surface ridges throughout the water columns, indicating that horizontal stirring is dominant over vertical motions. Near the high-resolution rings, many small-scale flow structures with size O(1~10) km are observed while these features are rarely found near the low-resolution rings. These small-scale structures affect the flow pattern around the rings as flow particles move more randomly in the high-resolution models. The dispersion rates are also affected by these small-scale structures as the relative horizontal dispersion coefficients are larger for the high-resolution models. The absolute vertical dispersion rates are, however, lower for the high-resolution models, because the particles tend to move along inclined eddy orbits when the resolution is low and this increases the magnitude of absolute vertical dispersion. Since relative vertical dispersion can reduce this effect from the orbital trajectories of particles, it gives a more reasonable magnitude range than absolute dispersion, and so is recommended in estimating vertical dispersion rates.
Numerical simulations of free surface flow over a broad-crested rectangular weir are conducted by using the volume of fraction (VOF) method and three different turbulence models, the k-${\varepsilon}$, RNG k-${\omega}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST models. The governing equations are solved by a second-order accurate finite volume method and the grid sensitivity study of solutions is carried out. The numerical results are evaluated by comparing the solutions with experimental and numerical results of Kirkgoz et al. (2008) and some non-dimensionalized experimental results obtained by Moss (1972) and Zachoval et al. (2012). The results show that the present numerical model can reasonably reproduce the experimental results, while three turbulent models yield different numerical predictions of two distinct zones of flow separation, the first zone is in front of the upstream edge of the weir and the second is created immediately behind the upstream edge of the weir where the flow is separated to form the separation bubble. The standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model appears to significantly underestimate the size of both separation zones and the k-${\omega}$ SST model slightly over-estimates the first separation zone in front of the weir. The RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ model predicts both separation zones in overall good agreement with the experimental measurement, while the k-${\omega}$ SST model yields the best numerical prediction of separation bubble at the upstream edge of the weir.
The strong turbulence characteristic of typhoon not only will significantly change flow field characteristics surrounding the large-scale wind turbine and aerodynamic force distribution on surface, but also may cause morphological evolution of coast dune and thereby form sand storms. A 5MW horizontal-axis wind turbine in a wind power plant of southeastern coastal areas in China was chosen to investigate the distribution law of additional loads caused by wind-sand coupling movement of coast dune at landing of strong typhoons. Firstly, a mesoscale Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) mode was introduced in for high spatial resolution simulation of typhoon "Megi". Wind speed profile on the boundary layer of typhoon was gained through fitting based on nonlinear least squares and then it was integrated into the user-defined function (UDF) as an entry condition of small-scaled CFD numerical simulation. On this basis, a synchronous iterative modeling of wind field and sand particle combination was carried out by using a continuous phase and discrete phase. Influencing laws of typhoon and normal wind on moving characteristics of sand particles, equivalent pressure distribution mode of structural surface and characteristics of lift resistance coefficient were compared. Results demonstrated that: Compared with normal wind, mesoscale typhoon intensifies the 3D aerodynamic distribution mode on structural surface of wind turbine significantly. Different from wind loads, sand loads mainly impact on 30° ranges at two sides of the lower windward region on the tower. The ratio between sand loads and wind load reaches 3.937% and the maximum sand pressure coefficient is 0.09. The coupling impact effect of strong typhoon and large sand particles is more significant, in which the resistance coefficient of tower is increased by 9.80% to the maximum extent. The maximum resistance coefficient in typhoon field is 13.79% higher than that in the normal wind field.
