Two-stage turbocharging is an important way to raise engine power density, to realize energy saving and emission reducing. At present, turbine matching of two-stage turbocharger is based on MAP of turbine. The matching method does not take the effect of turbines' interaction into consideration, assuming that flow at high pressure turbine outlet and low pressure turbine inlet is uniform. Actually, there is swirl flow at outlet of high pressure turbine, and the swirl flow will influence performance of low pressure turbine which influencing performance of engine further. Three-dimension models of turbines with two-stage turbocharger were built in this paper. Based on the turbine models, mechanism of swirl flow at high pressure turbine outlet influencing low pressure turbine performance was studied and a two-stage radial counter-rotation turbine system was raised. Mechanisms of the influence of counter-rotation turbine system acting on low-pressure turbine were studied using simulation method. The research result proved that in condition of small turbine flow rate corresponding to engine low-speed working condition, counter-rotation turbine system can effectively decrease the influence of swirl flow at high pressure turbine outlet imposing on low pressure turbine and increases efficiency of the low-pressure turbine, furthermore increases the low-speed performance of the engine.
This study investigates the response characteristics of a four-cylinder four-stroke turbocharged diesel engine by using computer simulation and experiments when a rapid acceleration is applied to the fuelpump rack. In the theoretical analysis, linearization method is used to avoid the difficulty on the complex nonlinear functions. Comppressor exit pressure, pressure and temperature of turbine inlet, and turbocharger speed are chosen as the independent variables of transfer functions which represent the dynamic characteristics of the turbocharger system, and expressed as the functions with respect to the time. Experiments on the same eigine system are also carried out to prove the validity of theoretical study. Further, this study carried an experiment for improving transient response performance by injecting air into the inlet manifold under the rapid accelerating conditions. The effects of air injection on the response performances are also represented at varying conditions such as injection pressure, injection period, accelerating rate, accelerating time, engine speed and load.
This study was experimentally analyzed to improve the performance and to reduce exhaust emissions in a turbochaged D.I. diesel engine of the displacement 9.4L. In generally, the system of intake port, fuel injection and turbocharger are very important factors which have influence on the engine performance and exhaust emission because the properties in the injected fuel depend on the combustion characteristics. The optimum results which is tested as available factors fur better performance and emission are as follows; the swirl ratio is 2.43, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is $5^{\circ}$ re-entrant type, nozzle hole diameter is ${\phi}0.28*6$, injection timing is BTDC $13^{\circ}CA$ and turbocharger is GT40 model which are selected compressor A/R 0.58 and turbine A/R 1.19.
In this study linear and nonlinear dynamic stability characteristics of a medium-size high-speed turbocharger, whose rotor is supported by two 3-lobe journal bearings, are analyzed to evaluate and identify the effects of its bearing design variables. The rotor has the rated speed of 40,500 rpm and maximum continuous speed of 45,000 rpm. At first, utilizing the linear stability analysis method, bearing designs of yielding stable or unstable LogDecs as small as possible are searched by manipulating with machined bearing clearances and preloads. As next, utilizing the nonlinear analysis method, limit cycles of the rotor responses at the rated and maximum continuous speeds are simulated to check their acceptances. Results have shown that for the turbocharger rotor-bearing system considered, the 3-lobe journal bearing design with a smaller machined clearance and a larger preload are preferred for the stable rotor responses. More importantly, since there exists a good correlation between the linear and nonlinear stability analysis results, it is concluded that firstly the linear stability analysis method may be applied to screen quickly the ranges of bearing designs for stable or least unstable solutions and then, lastly the nonlinear stability analysis method may be deployed to check an absolute motion stability in terms of the limit cycle.
Sensorless electric superchargers have recently been actively developed to provide a large amount of oxygen to engines in order assist the combustion process for miniaturizing the engines and improving fuel efficiency. The model-based sensorless method for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors has a disadvantage in that the system may become unstable due to parameter variations in low-speed operation and the rapid-acceleration section. An electric supercharger requires fast response to improve the engine response delay, such as the turbocharger turbo-rack. Therefore, the responsiveness must be improved to use the model-based sensorless system. The position compensation algorithm designed in this study is controlled by converting the position error into the beta, which is the angle formed by the d-axis and the stator current during sudden speed change. In this study, we improved the response of the model-based sensorless system through the algorithm and verified the algorithm validity by applying the algorithm to an actual dual-motor supercharger.
According to the regulation on the environment and fuel efficiency is becoming strict, many experiments are conducted to improve efficiency and emission in internal combustion engines. LTC (Low temperature combustion) technology is a promised solution for low emissions but there are a few barriers for the commercial engine. This paper includes optimization that applies LTC method to heavy duty diesel engine. Adequate LTC was applied to low and middle load as adaptability in heavy duty diesel engine, and optimization focused on reduction of fuel consumption was proceeded at high load. Through this research, strategy for practical use of LTC was selected, and fuel consumption has improved on the condition that satisfies the emission regulation at systematic viewpoint.
FCEV uses electric energy generated from fuel cell stack, thus all consisting parts must be re-designed to be suitable for electricity based system. Cathode air blower which supplies compressed air into fuel cell stack has similar shape of turbocharger, but a radial turbine of traditional turbocharger is removed and high speed BLDC motor is installed . Generally, maximum 10% of electric power of fuel cell stack is consumed in air blower, therefore an effective design of air blower can improve the performance of FCEV directly. This study will present an aerodynamic design process of an air blower and compare computational results with experimental data.

This paper describes briefly the simulation program for predicting the performance of a high speed turbocharged four cycle diesel engine. The wave phenomena in the intake and exhaust systems are calculated by the characteristic method. The combustion process in the power cycle is represented by the heat release pattern which is given by the Wiebe's function or the pattern based on measured values. Turbocharger matching for the engine is described by utilizing the characteristic maps of both the compressor and turbine, which are obtained from quasi-steady states. A comparison of experimental and calculated results shows a good agreement. Then the influences of the intake system, the period of valve overlap and the characteristics of the turbine are numerically investigated by the simulation.

The performance improvement and emission reduction in a turbocharged D.I. diesel engine was studied experimentally in this paper. The system of intake port, fuel injection and turbochager are very important factors which have influence on the engine performance and exhaust emission because the properties in the injected fuel depend on the combustion characteristics. Through these experiments it can be expected to meet performance and emission by optimizing the main parameters; the swirl ratio of intake port, fuel injection system and turbocharger. The swirl ratio of intake port was modified by hand-working and measured by impulse swirl meter. Through this steady flow test, we knew that the increase of swirl ratio is decreasing the mean flow coefficient, whereas the gulf factor is increasing. And the optimum results of engine performance and emission are as follows; the swirl ratio is 2.43, injection timing is BTDC 13。 CA, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is re-entrant 5$^{\circ}$, nozzle hole diameter is $\Phi$0.28*6, turbocharger is GT40 model which are compressor A/R 0.58 AND turbine A/R 1.19.
