In this study, the geometrical setup of a turbine blade is tracked. A research-scale rotating turbine blade system is setup with a single 3-axes accelerometer mounted on one of the blades. The turbine system is rotated by a controlled motor. The tilt and rolling angles of the rotating blade under operating conditions are determined from the response measurement of the single accelerometer. Data acquisition is achieved using a prototype wireless sensing system. First, the Rodrigues' rotation formula and an optimization algorithm are used to track the blade rolling angle and pitching angles of the turbine blade system. In addition, the blade flapwise natural frequency is identified by removing the rotation-related response induced by gravity and centrifuge force. To verify the result of calculations, a covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification method (SSI-COV) is applied to the vibration measurements of the blades to determine the system natural frequencies. It is thus proven that by using a single sensor and through a series of coordinate transformations and the Rodrigues' rotation formula, the geometrical setup of the blade can be tracked and the blade flapwise vibration frequency can be determined successfully.
This paper deals with an analytical and experimental investigation to predict the axial thrust load that results from turbocharger operating conditions. The Axial forces acting on the turbocharger thrust bearing are caused by the unbalance between turbine wheel gas forces and compressor wheel air forces. It has a great influence on the friction losses, which reduces the efficiency and performance of high-speed turbocharger. This paper presents the calculation procedure for the axial thrust forces under operating conditions in a turbocharger. The first step is to determine the relationship between thrust forces and strains by experimental and numerical methods. The analysis results were verified by measuring the strains on a thrust bearing with the specially designed test device. And then, the operating strains and temperatures were measured to inversely calculate the thrust strains which were compensated the thermal effects. Therefore it's possible to calculate the magnitudes of the thrust forces under operating turbocharger by comparing the regenerated strains with the rig test results. It will possible to optimize the design of a thrust bearing for reducing the mechanical friction losses using the results.
The dynamic performance analyses and tests for a 50kW turbo-generator (KIMM-TG50) were carried out. The operating concept of this machine is that it gets the initial driving force from the built-in motor-generator until it reaches its self-sustaining speed of 40,000 rpm, and then the driving mode is changed to self-operating mode by the combustor installed between the centrifugal compressor and the turbine. Due to winding mistake of motor-generator, the system could go only up to 22000 rpm by the motor so that high pressure air externally fed into the turbine was utilized to get the system to run up to 62,000 rpm thereafter. The vibration data collected during the tests revealed that the first bending critical speed is in near 5,600 rpm as predicted in the design stage of the rotor-bearing system, and that there were no other identifiable critical speeds up until 62,000 rpm due to high damping from the squeeze film damper-bearings supporting the rotor. This paper presented some of the experimental results along with dynamic performance predictions made in the design stage as a part of progress being made.
It is inevitable to evaluate the life of turbine rotor because the operating periods of power plants need to be extended. The magnetic methods utilizing Magnetic Barkhausen noise curve were applied to detect the degradation caused by thermal aging. The Magnetic property of material depends on the domain dynamics and it is affected by the microstructure of material. Therefore the magnetic property is very sensitive to the microstructure change of the material. It is, thus, very useful to detect the state of degradation of varying materials. The test specimen made of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel was used widely for turbine rotor material, and seven kinds of specimens with different degradation levels were prepared by the isothermal heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. With the increase of degradation, BHN was decreased. The result was compared with coercive force and vickers hardness.
A turbo-expander is developed for the regeneration in the expansion process. The turbo-expander operates in the partial admission and supersonic flow, and an axial-type single stage turbine is applied to the turbo-expander. Its outer diameter is 82mm and the operating gas is R134a. A 15kW reciprocating compressor is applied in this experiment and the turbo-expander is installed in the expansion process instead of the commonly using expansion valve. Two supersonic nozzles are applied for the expansion process. The high speed of R 134a after passing the supersonic nozzles gives the impulse force to the turbo-expander and some powers are generated on this process. A generator is installed at the end of the turbo-expander shaft. The generating output power from the turbo-expander is controlled by the power controller. Pressures and temperatures are measured on the lines for the performance investigation. More than 600W/(kg/sec) are generated in this experiment.
The aircraft engine is usually supported by rolling element bearings and has a small damping rate, which is vol y sensitive to external force. The high-performance requirement of the rotors leads to complex assembly designs and are more flexible. Squeeze film dampers (SFDs) are introduced to provide damping while crossing the critical speeds and stability to the rotor s :stem. Hence, the focus of the present investigation is on the decision of an optimal size of the flexible rotor system supported by the squeeze film dampers to minimize the maximum transmitted load and unbalance response over a range operating speeds. The enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA), which was developed by authors, is used in the optimization process. This algorithm is based on the synthesis of a modified genetic algorithm and simplex method. The results show significant benefits in using EGA when compared with nonlinear programming (NLP).
Asynchronous phenomenon occurs on the synchronous generators under power system when a generator's amplitude of electromagnetic force, phase angle, frequency and waveform etc become different from those of other synchronous generators which can follow instantly varying speed of turbine. Because the amplitude of electromagnetic force, phase frequency and waveform differ from those of other generators with which are to be put into parallel operation due to the change of excitation condition for load sharing and the sharing load change, if reactive current in the internal circuit circulates among generators, the efficiency varies and the stator winding of generators are overheated by resistance loss. When calculation method of protection settings and logic for protection of generator asynchronization will be recommended, a distance relay scheme is commonly used for backup protection. This scheme, called a step distance protection, is comprised of 3 steps for graded zones having different operating time. As for the conventional step distance protection scheme, zone 2 can exceed the ordinary coverage excessively in case of a transformer protection relay especially. In this case, there can be overlapped protection area from a backup protection relay and, therefore, malfunctions can occur when any fault occurs in the overlapped protection area. Distance relays and overcurrent relays are used for backup protection generally, and both relays have normally this problem, the maloperation, caused by a fault in the overlapped protection area. Corresponding to an IEEE standard, this problem can be solved with the modification of the operating time. On the other hand, in Korea, zones are modified to cope with this problem in some specific conditions. These two methods may not be obvious to handle this problem correctly because these methods, modifying the common rules, can cause another coordination problem. To overcome asynchronizing protection, this paper describes an improved backup protection coordination scheme using a new logic that will be suggested.

It is inevitable to evaluate the life of turbine rotor because the operating periods of power plants need to be extended. For the test, seven kinds of specimens with different degradation levels were prepared by the isothermal heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. Magnetic methods utilizing Barkhausen noise coercive force($BN_c$) were applied to detect the degradation caused by thermal aging. Magnetic property of material is related with domain dynamics and that is affected by the microstructure of material. Therefore $BN_c$ is very sensitive to the microstructure change of the material. With the increase of degradation, $BN_c$ was decreased and this phenomenon is considered due to precipitations and grain size. The result was compared with Vickers hardness($H_v$) and coercive force($H_c$) to detect the relative variation, and was related with $H_v$ and YS to estimate the change of the mechanical properties with the degradation.
