  • To assure the structural integrity for the hub and low speed shaft (LSS) of the drive train, it is necessary to obtain the ultimate aerodynamic loads acting on the wind turbine blade. The aim of this study is to predict the time histories of 3 forces and 3 moments at the hub and the LSS based on the design load case of the IEC 61400-1. From the calculated results most of the load components have rotor revolution frequency whereas thrust and torque of the LSS show blade passage frequency. It turns out that the EWM wind condition involves the maximum ultimate loads at both hub and LSS of the horizontal axis wind turbine.

  • The wind generally includes turbulence characteristics in nature. So the yaw errors between wind turbine direction and wind direction occur due to turbulence fluctuation. The yaw errors affect the fatigue load of wind turbine system and power reduction. The components of turbulence intensity are different from those of each site where the wind turbines are installed. We studied that the fatigue load and power efficiency are improved by controlling yaw motions. In this study, we controlled the averaged yaw error time according to site conditions by turbulence intensity.

Noise assessment is one of the major performance evaluations for wind turbine and nowadays, developing and research for measurement and method of the assessment considering environmental pollutants is being important. Object in this study is that figuring out sound power characteristic of the gearbox for wind turbine through measuring sound intensity. In back-to-back test, we can figure out the noise characteristic of the gearbox for wind turbine through comparing and measuring sound pressure level, sound power level in operating at the each load condition respectively.

  • This paper studies the method to predict voltage variation that can be presented in the case of operating a small-sized wind turbine in grid connection to the isolated small-sized power system. In order to do this, it makes up the simplified simulation model of the existing power plant connected to the isolated system, load, transformer, and wind turbine on the basis of PSCAD/EMTDC and compares them with the operating characteristics of the actual established wind turbine. In particular, it suggests a simplified model formed with equivalent impedance of the power system network including the load to analytically predict voltage variation at the connected point. It also confirms that the voltage variation amount calculated by the suggested method accords well with both simulation and actually measured data. The results can be utilized as a tool to ensure security and reliability in the stage of system design and preliminary investigation of a small-sized grid connected wind turbine.

  • This study analyzes the design and part load performance of a power generation system combining a micro gas turbine (MGT) and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). Design performances of cycles adopting several different organic fluids are analyzed and compared with performance of the steam based cycle. All of the organic fluids recover greater MGT exhaust heat than the steam cycle (much lower stack temperature), but their bottoming cycle efficiencies are lower. R123 provides higher combined cycle efficiency than steam does. The efficiencies of the combined cycle with organic fluids are maximized when the turbine exhaust heat of the MGT is fully recovered at the MGT recuperator, whereas the efficiency of the combined cycle with steam shows an almost reverse trend. Since organic fluids have much higher density than steam, they allow more compact systems. The efficiency of the combined cycle, based on a MGT with 30 percent efficiency, can reach almost 40 percent. hlso, the part load operation of the combined system is analyzed. Two representative power control methods are considered and their performances are compared. The variable speed control of the MGT exhibits far better combined cycle part load efficiency than the fuel only control despite slightly lower bottoming cycle performance.

  • In this study, the dynamic modeling of floating offshore wind turbine system is reported and the dynamic behavior of the platform for the offshore wind turbine system is analyzed. The modeling of the wind load for a floating offshore wind turbine tower is based on the vertical profile of wind speed. The relative Morison equation is employed to obtain the wave load. ADAMS is used to carry out the dynamic analysis of the floating system that should withstand waves and the wind load. Computer simulations for four types of tension leg platforms are performed, and the simulation results for the platforms are compared with each other.

  • In case of the limitation of Deep RIE fabrication far Micro Gas Turbine, bearing aspect ratio is limited in very small value. The characteristics such as pressure distribution, load capacity and non-linearity of a short bearing of L/D=0.083 and a conventional bearing of L/D=1.0 with coupled boundary effects are investigated for Micro Gas Turbine bearings. The coupled effect was analyzed by mass conservation at coupled end area. The results, increasing load capacity and non-linearity due to the coupled effect of thrust and journal bearing, are obtained and the selection of journal bearing type is discussed.

  • Recently the diameter of the 5MW wind turbine reaches 126m, and the tower height is nearly the same with the wind turbine diameter. The blade will experience periodic inflow oscillation due to blade rotation inside the ground shear flow region, that is, the inflow velocity is maximum at uppermost position and minimum at lowermost position. In this study we compare the aerodynamic data between two inflow conditions, i.e, uniform flow and normal wind profile. From the computed results all of the relative errors for oscillating amplitudes increased due to the ground shear flow effect. Especially My at hub and $F_x$, $M_y$, $M_z$ at LSS increased enormously. It turns out that the aerodynamic analysis including the ground shear flow effect must be considered for fatigue load analysis.

  • Wind turbine blades are adjusted in real-time according to the wind conditions and blade deformations to improve power generation efficiency. It is necessary to predict and reduce the aeroelastic deformations of wind turbine blades. In this paper, the equivalent model of the blade is established by the finite element method (FEM), and the aerodynamic load of the blade is evaluated based on the blade element momentum (BEM) theory. The aeroelastic coupling model is established, in which the bending-torsion coupling effect of the blade is taken into account. The steady and dynamic aeroelastic deformations are calculated. The influences of the blade section's shear centre position and the blade's sweepback design on the deformations are analyzed. The novel approaches of reducing the twist angle of the blade by changing the shear centre position and sweepback of the blade are presented and proven to be feasible.

  • Francis turbines are often operated over a wide load range due to high flexibility in electricity demand and penetration of other renewable energies. This has raised significant concerns about the existing designing criteria. Hydraulic turbines are not designed to withstand large dynamic pressure loadings on the stationary and rotating parts during such conditions. Previous investigations on transient operating conditions of turbine were mainly focused on the pressure fluctuations due to the rotor-stator interaction. This study characterizes the synchronous and asynchronous pressure and velocity fluctuations due to rotor-stator interaction and rotating vortex rope during load variation, i.e. best efficiency point to part load and vice versa. The measurements were performed on the Francis-99 test case. The repeatability of the measurements was estimated by providing similar movement to guide vanes twenty times for both load rejection and load acceptance operations. Synchronized two dimensional particle image velocimetry and pressure measurements were performed to investigate the dominant frequencies of fluctuations, vortex rope formation, and modes (rotating and plunging) of the rotating vortex rope. The time of appearance and disappearance of rotating and plunging modes of vortex rope was investigated simultaneously in the pressure and velocity data. The asynchronous mode was observed to dominate over the synchronous mode in both velocity and pressure measurements.
