The vortex ring state that occurs during the descending flight of a rotorcraft generates a circulating flow like a donut near the rotating surface, and it often causes a rotorcraft fall due to loss of thrust. In this paper, we have physically identified the flow field in the vortex ring state of the quadcopter, one of the types of unmanned aerial vehicles. The descending flight of the quadcopter was simulated in a 1m subsonic wind tunnel of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) and the Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) was used for the flow field measurement. The induced velocity in the hovering state is estimated by using the momentum theory and the test was carried out in the range of descent rate at which the vortex ring condition could be caused. The development and the direction of the vortex ring were confirmed by the measurement of the flow field according to not only the descent rate but also propeller separation distance. In addition, the results of the study show the vortex ring state can be predicted sufficiently by measuring the flow velocity around the quadcopter.

In general, RMR classification system is used for the support design of a tunnel. Face mapping during excavation and RMR-based rock classifications are conducted in order to provide information for complementary changes to preliminary survey plans and for continuous geological estimations in direction of tunnel route. Although they are ever so important, there are not enough time for survey in general and sometimes even face mapping is not available. Linear regression analysis for the estimation of mediating RQD and condition of discontinuities, which require longer time and more detailed observation in RMR, was performed and optimum regression equations are suggest as the result. The geological data collected from tunnels were analyzed in accordance with three rock types as sedimentary rock, phyllite and granite to see geological effects, generally not been considered in previous researches. Parameters for the regression analysis were set another RMR factor.
In recent years, high-strength, light-weight materials have been widely used in the construction of high-rise buildings. Such structures generally have flexible, low-damping characteristics. Consequently, wind-induced oscillation greatly affects the structural safety and the comfort of the building's occupants. In this research, wind tunnel experiments were carried out to study the wind-induced vibration of a building with a tuned liquid column damper (TLCD). Then, a model for predicting the aerodynamic response in the across-wind direction was generated. Finally, a computing procedure was developed for the analytical modeling of the structural oscillation in a building with a TLCD under the wind load. The model agrees substantially with the experimental results. Therefore, it may be used to accurately calculate the structural response. Results from this investigation show that the TLCD is more advantageous for reducing the across-wind vibration than the along-wind oscillation. When the across-wind aerodynamic effects are considered, the TLCD more effectively controls the aerodynamic response. Moreover, it is also more useful in suppressing the acceleration than the displacement in biaxial directions. As s result, TLCDs are effective devices for reducing the wind-induced vibration in buildings. Parametric studies have also been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the TLCD in suppressing the structural oscillation. This study may help engineers to more correctly predict the aerodynamic response of high-rise buildings as well as select the most appropriate TLCDs for reducing the structural vibration under the wind load. It may also improve the understanding of wind-structure interactions and wind resistant designs for high-rise buildings.
Wind measurements were made on the Canton Tower at a height of 461 m above ground during the Typhoon Vincente, the wind-induced accelerations and displacements of the tower were recorded as well. Comparisons of measured wind parameters at upper level of atmospheric boundary layer with those adopted in wind tunnel testing were presented. The measured turbulence intensity can be smaller than the design value, indicating that the wind tunnel testing may underestimate the crosswind structural responses for certain lock-in velocity range of vortex shedding. Analyses of peak factors and power spectral density for acceleration response shows that the crosswind responses are a combination of gust-induced buffeting and vortex-induced vibrations in the certain range of wind directions. The identified modal frequencies and mode shapes from acceleration data are found to be in good agreement with existing experimental results and the prediction from the finite element model. The damping ratios increase with amplitude of vibration or equivalently wind velocity which may be attributed to aerodynamic damping. In addition, the natural frequencies determined from the measured displacement are very close to those determined from the acceleration data for the first two modes. Finally, the relation between displacement responses and wind speed/direction was investigated.

In the present study were examined numerically and experimentally the off-design performance characteristics on an axisymmetric plug nozzle with variable throat area. In this nozzle concept, its throat area can be changed by translating the plug into the axial direction. First, a mixed-expansion plug nozzle, in which two expansion parts are arranged both inside and outside, was designed by means of the method of characteristics. Second, the CFD analysis was verified by the cold-flow wind tunnel test. Third, its performance characteristics were evaluated over a wide range of pressure ratio from half to double throat area through the design point, using the CFD code verified by the wind tunnel tests. It was made clear from the study that not so critical thrust efficiency losses were found and the maximum thrust efficiency loss was at most approximately 5 % under off-design conditions without external flow. This result shows that a plug nozzle can give the altitude compensation even under off-design geometry operations. However, shock waves were observed in the inner expansion part under the doubled throat area operation and thus some thermal problems may be caused on the plug surface. Furthermore, collapse of cell structure on the plug surface was observed with external flow (around Mach number 2.0) as it became lower pressure ratio below the design point and the fact may result in big efficiency loss regardless of geometrical configuration.
As one of the development directions of high-performance ships to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, there is research on high-performance propellers. However, in the case of conventional screw propellers, as they have been studied for a long time, there is a limit to improving efficiency only by depending on the conventional design and analysis methods. In this study, we tried to solve the problems using the Coanda effect by spraying a jet on the surface of the hydrofoil. The Coanda hydrofoil consists of a tunnel and jet slit to make jet flow. The computation was performed for each tunnel and slit position, and the efficiency according to the geometry of the hydrofoil was analyzed. In addition, a study on the 3D geometry change was conducted to analyze the performance according to the span direction spraying range and hydrofoil shape. As the height of the slit and the diameter of the tip were lower, when the slit is located in the center of the hydrofoil, the lift force increased and the drag force decreased. The increase rate of lift-to-drag ratio was different according to the shape of the hydrofoil, and the efficiency of the spraying condition of 0.1S-0.5S, which had the least effect on the vortex at the tip of the blade, was high for all 3D hydrofoils. When the geometry of the slit was optimized, and also the shape and spray range of the hydrofoil in 3D was considered, the efficiency of the jet sprayed hydrofoil was increased.

In order to study the open-water test and analysis techniques for pumpjet propulsors in the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), at the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, a set of test equipment was designed and manufactured. The pumpjet propulsor is composed of rotor, stator and duct resulting in the strong interaction between the components. A ring-shaped sensor was developed to measure the thrust and torque for duct and stator. The test equipment including the pumpjet is installed on an existing POW dynamometer in the reverse direction. The results from the reverse POW test setup were validated against those from the conventional POW test setup in the Towing Tank (TT) as well as in the LCT. The pumpjet open-water test was conducted at the Reynolds number of around 1.0×106, at which the obtained experimental data became stable in the Reynolds number effect test. The open-water test for the rotor (rotor-only) was conducted to study whether the duct and stator should be considered as a part of the hull or the propulsor. On the basis of the test results, it was shown that the duct and stator could be included in the propulsor. The total thrust, combined thrust of rotor, duct, and stator was used for the pumpjet open-water test analysis. As the whole pumpjet is defined as a propulsor, it is thought that the self-propulsion test and analysis could be conducted in the same way as that of the conventional propeller.

Due to the complex terrain around high-speed railways, the windbreaks were established along different landforms, resulting in irregular windbreak transition regions between different subgrade infrastructures (flat ground, cutting, embankment, etc). In this paper, the effect of a windbreak transition on the wind flow around railways subjected to crosswinds was studied. Wind tunnel testing was conducted to study the wind speed change around a windbreak transition on flat ground with a uniform wind speed inflow, and the collected data were used to validate a numerical simulation based on a detached eddy simulation method. The validated numerical method was then used to investigate the effect of the windbreak transition from the flat ground to cutting (the "cutting" is a railway subgrade type formed by digging down from the original ground) for three different wind incidence angles of 90°, 75°, and 105°. The deterioration mechanism of the flow fields and the reasons behind the occurrence of the peak wind velocities were explained in detail. The results showed that for the windbreak transition on flat ground, the impact was small. For the transition from the flat ground to the cutting, the influence was relatively large. The significant increase in the wind speeds was due to the right-angle structure of the windbreak transition, which resulted in sudden changes of the wind velocity as well as the direction. In addition, the height mismatch in the transition region worsened the protective effect of a typical windbreak.
The flows around a high speed train are very important because they could affect the aerodynamic characteristics such as drag and acoustic noise. Especially the boundary layer of flows could represent the characteristic of flows around the high speed train. Most previous studies have focused on the boundary layer region along the train length direction for the side of the train and underbody. The measurement and analysis of the boundary layer for the roof side is also very important because it could determine the flow inlet condition for the pantograph. In this study, the roof boundary layer was measured with a 1/20 scaled model of the next generation high speed train, and the results were compared with full-scaled computational fluid dynamics results to confirm their validity. As a result, it was confirmed that the flow inlet condition for the pantograph is about 85% of the train speed. Additionally, the characteristics of the boundary layer, which increases along the train direction, was also analyzed.

The objective of this study is to analyze the heat transfer loss of covering materials in a single-span plastic greenhouse under the steady-state wind environment. To achieve this objective, the following were conducted: (1) design of a small-scaled wind tunnel (SCWT) to analyze heat losses of the greenhouse and its performance; (2) determination of the overall heat transfer coefficient (OHTC) for the covering materials using a small-scaled greenhouse model. The SCWT consists of the blowing, dispersion, steady flow, reduction and testing areas. Each part of the SCWT was customized and designed to maintain air flow at steady state and to minimize the variances in the SCWT test. In this study, the OHTCs of the covering materials were calculated by separating each with the roof, side wall, front and back of the small-scaled greenhouse model. The results of this study show that the OHTC of the roof increases as wind speed increases but the zones in which the increase rate of the OHTC decreased, were distinguished by wind tunnel wing speed of 2 ms-1. For the side wall, the increase rate of the OHTC was particularly higher in the 0-1 ms-1 zone.
