  • Intracerebral schwannomas are rare and there have been none reported in Korea. We present the case of a 25-year-old man with newly developed right-side weakness and recent seizure aggravation. His seizures started approximately 9 years prior to admission. At that time, a 1 cm diameter intra-axial enhancing mass at the left precentral gyrus was found on magnetic resonance image (MRI). After 9 years of observation and treatment with antiepileptic medication, an MRI taken due to symptom aggravation revealed peri-tumoral cyst formation with tumor enlargement. The tumor was surgically removed. Subsequently, right-side weakness diminished and there was good seizure control. Pathologic diagnosis was schwannoma. Schwannoma is a very rare tumor and there are no pathognomonic findings on radiologic images; thus, it is challenging to make a correct diagnosis. However, considering the natural course and excellent prognosis after surgical treatment of this kind of intra-axial mass with benign features, early surgery for diagnosis and proper treatment is highly recommended.

  • Warthin's tumor (WT) is second most common neoplasm in the parotid gland and it can be accompanied by inflammation and necrosis. The chest wall inflammation may present a rapid and fatal clinical course and secondary to parotid abscess is extremely rare. An 81-year-old man came to emergency room complained of rapidly enlarged left parotid mass and inflammatory symptoms and signs around the upper lateral neck. We performed incision and drainage with adequate infection control. He was pathologically diagnosed as abscess. We report the unique and instructive clinical case with a literature review.

  • It is very useful benefits to use the megavoltage photon beams in deep site tumor radiotherapy for skin sparing effects. But, In some cases of head and mock tumors, it is often necessary to use spoiler for rapid buildup on skin region. A spoiler with tissue equivalent material to be moved between the patients and the collimator can increase or control the skin dose and buildup region due to position and thickness of the spoiler was measured. Then, the effect of spoiler on skin dose and build up region in protruded tumor of head and neck was evaluated quantitatively. The measurements were abtained with PTW 2334 chamber (Markus type) on a polystylene phantom for 6MV x-ray from an accelerator.

  • The fibrous dysplasia is a progressive and disabling condition that lead to deformity, especially weight bearing bones. The morbidity that is associated with the polyostotic fibrous dysplasia is the recurrent fracture and deformity. Various methods of treatment had been failed to control this problem. We used osteotomy and reconstruction nailing for polyostotic fibrous dysplasia occured in the proximal part of right femur with varus deformity and reconstruction nailing in left femur without osteotomy, and interlocking intramedullary nailing in right tibia to prevent pathologic fracture. These methods brought a good result of bone union and full weight bearing ambulation after 1 year and 6 month follow up. We think these methods are useful methods to control refracture and deformity, so we reported this case with bibliographic reviews.

  • A case-control study of the association of miR-499A>G rs3746444 with risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)was conducted. Patients with HCC and healthy control subjects were recruited for genotyping of miR-499A>G using duplex polymerase-chain-reaction with confronting-two-pair primer(PCR-RFLP) analysis. The MiR-499 GG genotype was associated with a decreased risk of HCC as compared with the miR-499 AA genotype (adjusted OR=0.74, 95%CI=0.24-0.96). Similarly, the GG genotype showed a 0.45-fold decreased HCC risk in a recessive model. The MiR-499 G allele was significantly associated with decreased risk of HCC among patients infected with HBV in a dominant model (OR=0.09, 95%CI= 0.02-0.29). In conclusion, the MiR-499A>G rs3746444 polymorphism is associated with HCC risk in the Chinese population, and may be useful predictive marker for CAD susceptibility.

  • In the clinical application of ultrasonic hyperthermia, selective heating of tumor is essential and thus precise control of ultrasonic intensity in both tumor and normal tissue is needed. In this paper, a hexagonal array transducer for ultrasonic hyperthermia is designed and manufactured of which focal point and focal region can be ocntrolled by the digital phase control circuit proposed by authors. Profiles of the focussed ultrasound beam in water and those of temperature in phantom were determined. The experimental and computed results are in good agreement.

  • The anititumor and immunologic activities of the glycoproteins extracted from sea cucumber (Stichopus japonicus) on mice bearing sarcoma 180 cells were investigated . Maximum tumor suppression (64%) occurred at the dose of 100mg glycoprotein/kg. The highest prolongation ratio was achieved at the level of 100mg/kg an dincreased by 395 more than that of control. Glycoproteins from sea cucumber exhibited direct cytotoxic effect on the tumor cells. Dose dependent increase of leucocyte, peritoneal exudate cell and weights of immunoorgans revealed the improvement of immunity. When the glycoportein-administered group was compared with the control, a significant difference was not noted in the clinico-chemical values such as S-GOT, S-GPT , alkaline phoshatse activity, total protein, cholesterol, triglyceride, urea nitrogen and glucose levels in blood. These results suggests that the antitumor activity of sea cucumber glycoprotein is associated with activation of cells in the immune system.

  • In order to examine the anticarcinogenic effects of garlic juice on the hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis induced by 9, 10-dimethyl-1, 2-benzanthracene (DMBA) totally 135 hamster.0.5% DMBA in mineral oil were painted onto the hamster buccal pouch three times a week on 50th, 70th and 90th day, while normal saline, 1% and 3% garlic juice were forced to oral tube feeding. Tumor cell induction could be seen on 50th experimental day, presumed to early carcinogenic inductive stage. And the tumor cells proliferated rapidly thereafter, so 70th and 90th experimental day were chosen for the comparison of anticarcinogenic effect of garlic juice. The every specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formalin for routine histopathological observation and also fixed in Carnoy's solution for the BrdU immunohistochemital detection of S-stage tumor cell distribution during the carcinogenesis. There showed more or less increased anticarcinogenic effect of garlic juice against DMBA induced hamster buccal pouch carcinoma, increased comparing to the control group showing invasive tumor growth after all histopathologically, BrdU immunoreactivity on normal pouch mucosa epithelium, representing the mitotic status, more decreased in the garlic juice feeding group than the control group. Meanwhile the neoplastic epithelium of all experimental groups showed much increased BrdU immunostaining irregularly.
