  • The purpose of this paper is to clarify the effect of wall proximity on the terminal velocity of single air bubbles in vertical tubes. As an initial step, experiments were conducted to determine the terminal velocity, shape, and path of single air bubbles rising freely in water. The terminal velocity of air bubbles rising through water was measured in cylindrical tubes, rectangular tubes, and parallel plates respectively. The results of effect wall of cylindrical tubes were shown as a dimensionless plot, and may also be used to arrive at a decision regarding the minimum size of tube.

  • In this paper probabilistic fracture mechanics(PFM) approach is employed to evaluate the integrity of CANDU Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubes. Modified failure assessment diagram(Jr-FAD), plastic collapse, and critical crack length(CCL) approach are used for evaluating failure probability of the tubes. Jr-FAD was extended from the Kr-FAD because fracture of pressure tubes occurs in brittle manner due to hydrogen embrittlement of material by deuterium fluence. For developing the probabilistic integrity evaluation module, AECL procedures and fracture toughness parameters of EPRI were used.

  • This paper is to present the results of a comprehensive study on heat transfer in annuli with spirally corrugated inner tubes in the turbulent regime. Tube surface-temperature measurements were used to explain the enhancement phenomena in the annuli with several different corrugated tubes. Nusselt numbers were between 1.1 and 2 times the smooth annulus values. These enhancement values can be used to determine the appropriate range of applicability for spirally corrugated annuli.

  • This study is a seismic analysia of absorber rod in KMRR Reactivity Control Mechanism. The model being studied i8 two coaxial tubes (control absorber rod and flow tube) immersed in the water and partially coupled (overlap) by water Hap. The hydrodynamic mass effects by the water in each surrounding conditions are considered in the model. The natural frequencies, stresses and displacements of the system due to Safe Shutdown Earthquake are computed in the cases of in-phase modes and out-of-phase modes of two coaxial tubes. The results show that maximum stresses are well below the allowable limit and maximum displacements at the ends of both tubes in out-of-phase modes are so huck that the tubes contact each other in the overlap zone.

  • This research was concerned with the enhancement of heat transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different vertical tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes were a bare inner surface, groove inner surface, corrugated inner surface and spring inserted inner surface tubes. The additive concentration was about 0.08 mass%. The heat transfer coefficient was measured as a function of film Reynolds number in the range of 20~200. Experiments were tarried out at higher cooling water temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ to simulate an air cooling condition for several kinds of absorber testing tubes. The experimental results were compared with cases without surfactant. The enhancement of heat transfer by Marangoni convection effect which was generated by addition of the surfactant is observed in each test tube. Especially, it is clarified that the tube with an inserted spring has the highest enhancement effect.

  • A new electron source and an electron collection source were found for the closure of the internal electron circuit inside fluorescent lamp (FL) tubes. The sources are formed in front of the polarized electric-insulator particles on the metal electrodes at both ends of the FL tube. The appearance and disappearance of both sources are controlled by the electric voltages applied to the metal electrodes. The electrons and $Ar^+$ for the sources are generated by the ionization of the Ar atoms, and they return to the Ar atoms at the electron collection source. Thus, the Ar atoms are preserved in the FL tubes, ensuring a long operation life for such tubes.

  • Single phase pressure drops in micro tubes were investigated through an experimental measurement and a numerical simulation. Experimental Po was obtained in circular micro tubes with 87 and $118{\mu}m$ diameter with distilled water. Experiments were carried out in laminar flow region with varying the Re 15-450 for the $87{\mu}m$ diameter tubes and 60-1300 for the $118{\mu}m$ diameter tube. No early transition from laminar to turbulent flow was detected for the experimental range. The computational estimation of pressure drop in the $87{\mu}m$ diameter tube was performed with the aid of CFD software. Boundary conditions from experiments were used for the numerical simulation. The results of experimental and numerical studies showed a good agreement with the conventional macro theory.

  • Compact steam boiler is a useful heat exchanger in a space-intensive system. There are some constraints in terms of sizing and designing the space confined in the system which is usually used in vessels. In this study, design considerations for heavy duty heat exchangers of compact steam boilers are presented and evaluated. Especially, evaporator tubes of marine boiler which are exposed to a high temperature environment are considered. Also, extended surface designs with a high temperature are examined. In order to determine the criteria with considerations of both heat transfer rate and pressure drop in the heat exchanger, they are evaluated with major variables, such as the tube diameter, the number of tubes, and the tube length. Finally, the design parameters are estimated as the bare tubes are installed instead of the finned tubes.

  • An in vitro experiment under laminar non-pulsatile blood flow and an acute canine ex vivo femoral A-V series shunt experiment were undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of saline perfusion through pores of porous tubes to prevent formation of mural thrombus. PS/SBR porous tubes were used for the in vitro experiment. Commercially obtained ePTFE porous tubes were etched by sodium naphthalenide, and the etched tubes were used for the ex vivo experiment. According to the results of the in vitro experiment, mural thrombus on the surface of the porous tribe could be prevented by the saline perfusion. Adhered blood cells decreased semi-logarithmically with increased perfusion rate (up to $0.022\;ml/min-cm^2$) of isotonic saline solution. According to results of the ex vivo experiment, mural thrombus decreased with increased perfusion rate (upto $0.060\;ml/min-cm^2$).

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to estimate the flexural behavior of circular concrete beams confined by carbon sheet tube under the loading and unloading cycles. Six specimens were produced with different layers of carbon sheets and with or without corrugations inside of tubes. The experimental results represented that the load and displacement capacity are increased in the specimens which have increased layers of tube and have installed corrugations inside of tubes. In order to obtain enough capacity, tubes have to keep tubes at proper layers but it can not affect positively more than certain layers to increase the layers of tube. Therefore, appropriate estimation of structural member is needed to obtain enough capacity and displacement by means of proper carbon sheet direction and layers of tube.
