In this study, amplitudes of turbulence excitation are obtained for selected tubes inside the KSNP SG and their normal work-rates are investigated to estimate the magnitude of fretting-wear. From the results of numerical calculation, row 40&41 tubes show the maximum work-rates. Up to this row number, the work-rates inside the row 41 have much larger values than those of outside tubes. This phenomenon reveals the particular central one which has larger normal work-rate than that of outside zone. It turns out that both of the higher local mode at the U-bend region and the larger value of effective mass in the central region Increase the normal work-rate enormously.
Tubes in heat exchanger of fuel rods in reactor core are supported at intemediate point by support p0lates or springs. Current practice is, in case of heat exchanger, to allow clearance between tube and support plate for design and manufacturing consideration. And in case of fuel rod the clearance in support point can be generated due to the support spring force relaxation. Flow-induced vibration of a tube can cause it to impact or rub against support plate or against adjacent tubes and can result in fretting-wear. The tube-to- support dynamic interaction is used to relate experimental wear data from single-span test rigs to real multi-span heat exchanger configurations. The dynamic interaction cna be measured during experimental wear tests. However, the dynamic interaction is difficult to measure in real heat exchangers and, therefore, analytical techniques are required to estimate this interaction. This paper describels the nonlinear impact model of DAGS(Dynamic Analysis of Gapped Structure) code which simulates the tube response to external sinusodial or step excitation and predicts tube motion and tube-to-support dynamic interaction. Three experimental measurements-two single span rods excited by sinusodial force and a two span rod impacted by a steel ball are compared from the simulation nonlinear model of DAGS code. The simulation results from DAGS code are in good agreement with measurements. Therefore, the developed model of DAGS code is good analytical tool for estimating tube-to-support dynamic interaction in real heat exchangers.
Fluid-elastic instability and turbulence-induced vibration of steam generator U-tubes of a nuclear power plant are studied numerically to investigate the effect of design changes of support structures in the upper region of the tubes. Two steam generator models, Model A and Model B, are considered in this study. The main design features of both models are identical except for the conditions of vertical and horizontal support bars. The location and number of vertical and horizontal support bars at the middle of the U-bend region in Model A differs from that of Model B. The stability ratio and the amplitude of turbulence-induced vibration are calculated by a computer program based on the ASME code. The mode shape with a large modal displacement at the upper region of the U-tube is the key parameter related to the fretting wear between the tube and its support structures, such as vertical, horizontal, and diagonal support bars. Therefore, the location and the number of vertical and horizontal support bars have a great influence on the fretting wear mechanism. The variation in the stability ratios for each vibrational mode is compared with respect to Model A and Model B. Even though both models satisfy the design criteria, Model A shows substantial improvements over Model B, particularly in terms of having greater amplitude margins in the turbulence-excited vibration (especially at the inner region of the tube bundle) and better stability ratios for the fluid-elastic instability.
The wear of steam generator tubes is due to the vibration occurred between tubes and tube supporters. To predict the future wear depth, the wear constants of the impact and the sliding model is used. The wear constants, 3C/2 and K/3H, are found inversely from known wear depth and time. Using these constants, the future wear depths are found from two bodies that deform the elliptical shape. The results are compared with the measured wear depth of steam generator tubes in a nuclear power plant. The results show that the predicted wear depth envelopes the measured wear depth.
Nuclear fuels are always exposed to hot temperature and high speed coolant flow during the reactor operation. Thus the fuel rod accompanies small amplitude vibration due to the turbulent flow. The random vibration causes friction between the fuel rod and the grid structure which provides the lateral supports. The friction is critical to the fuel rod fretting wear, and it degrades fuel performance when a severe wear is developed. LuGre friction model is introduced in the paper, and the performance was evaluated comparing to the classical Coulomb model. It is shown that the developed friction force considering the Coulomb friction is not enough to stop or delay the motion while the stick-slip can be simulated using LuGre friction model. Numerical solutions of the two dimensional spacer grid cell model with the modern friction are also reviewed, and it is discussed that the new friction model simulates well the nonlinear mechanism.
The interaction between wear and corrosion can significantly increase total material losses in water chemistry environment. The corrosive wear tests of a PWR steam generator tube material (Alloy 690) against the anti vibration bar material (409 SS) were performed at room temperature. The tests were performed in alkaline water chemistry conditions. NaOH solution was selected for test condition to investigate the corrosive wear effect of steam generator tube material in alkaline pH condition without other factors. The flow induced vibration can caused tube damage and the corrosion can be occurred by water chemistry. The test results showed that, in the alkaline solution at pH 13.9, the corrosion current density was increased about ten times than that in the distilled water. And wear rate at pH 13.9 was increased about ten times from that at neutral condition. However, the wear rate was decreased with time. The decrease would be attributed to the change in roughness of specimen or sub-layer of the worn surface with time. From microstructure observation, severe abrasive shape and several wear debris were found. From those results, it could infer that the oxide film on Alloy 690 changed to easily breakable one in the alkaline water, and then abrasion with corrosion became the main wear mechanism.
Wear on the tube-to-spring contact is investigated experimentally. The wear is caused by the vibration of the tube while the springs support it. As for the supporting conditions, applied are the contacting normal force (P) of 5 N, just-contact (P = 0 N) and the gap of 0.1 mm. The gap condition is tried far considering the influence of simultaneous impacting and sliding on wear. Results show that the wear volume increases in the order of the gap, the just-contact and the 5 N conditions. This is explained from the contact geometry of the spring, which is convex of smooth contour. The contact shear force is regarded smaller in the case of the gap existence compared with the other conditions. Wear mechanism is considered from SEM observation of the worn surface. The variation of the normal contact traction is analysed using the finite element analysis to estimate the slip displacement range on the contact with consulting the fretting map previously obtained.
The tubes in a heat exchanger, such as a steam generator (SG), are subjected to crossflow, and interaction between tubes and supports can happen, which can cause fretting wear of tubes. Although many experiments and models have been established, some detailed mechanisms are still not sufficiently clear. In this work, more attention is paid to obtain the regulation of impact and sliding in the complex process and many factors, such as excitation forces and clearances. The responses and contact forces were analyzed to obtain clear understanding of the influences of these factors. Room temperature tests in the air were established. The results show that the effect of clearance on the normal work rate is not monotonous and instead has two peaks. The force ratio can influence the normal work rate by changing the distribution of contact angles, which can result in higher sliding in the contact process. Fretting wear tests are conducted, and the wear surfaces are analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). The results of this work can serve as a reference for impactsliding contact analysis between AVBs and tubes in steam generators.
Flow-Induced Vibration of steam generator tubes may result in fretting wear damage at the tube-to-support locations. KSNP(Korean Standard Nuclear Power plant) steam generators experienced fretting wear in the upper part of U-bend above the central cavity region of steam generators. This region has conditions susceptible to the flow-induced vibration, such as high flow velocity, high void fraction, and longer unsupported span. To improve its performance, APR1400 steam generator is designed with additional supports in this region to reduce unsupported span and to reduce peak velocity in the central cavity region. In this paper, we examined its performance improvement using ATHOS code. The thermal-hydraulic condition in the region of secondary side of APR1400 steam generator is obtained using the ATHOS3 code. The effective mass for modal analysis is calculated using the void fraction, enthalpy, and operating pressure information from ATHOS3 code result. With the effective mass distribution along the tube, natural frequency and mode shape is obtained using ANSYS code. Finally, stability ratios and real mean squared displacements for selected tubes of the APR1400 steam generator are computed. From these results, the current design of the APR1400 steam generator are examined.
