  • Potential tsunamis which may occur near Ryukyu Islands were simulated. Propagation characteristics of the potential tsunamis over the southwestern sea and the influence of tsunamis on the southwestern coast of Korean Peninsula were analyzed. The shallow water area in the east sea of China and the deep water Okinawa Trough play an important role in wave transformation and propagation of the potential tsunamis. The propagation characteristics of the potential tsunamis generated near Ryukyu Islands can be described as in followings : In the first stage after generation, the tsunamis propagate with high speed both northeastward and southwestward along the Okinawa Trough. As a result the waves are elongated and the tsunami height is significantly reduced. The elongated crest of tsunamis spans the whole distance of the Okinawa Trough and lines up toward the edge of the continental shelf of East China Sea. Then, the tsunamis are propagating towards the southeast coast of China. Thus, the influence of tsunamis on the Korean coasts becomes weak.

  • Planning for the construction of ports and harbors usually takes place without the consideration of tsunamis because of their rare occurrence, approximately once every 100 years. However, recent warnings indicate that massive earthquakes could occur in Japan within the next 30 years. Earthquakes may generate large-scale tsunamis. Therefore, any tsunamis in the vicinity of Japan would also be expected to affect eastern Korea. Therefore, with the looming concerns of tsunamis and earthquakes, immediate attention must be given to the planning of ports and harbors. The warnings deserve an immediate response. The threatened regions cover a very large territory, and the degree of severity of the tsunamis is forecasted to be varied. Therefore, any modeling of the potential scenarios will require a broad array of possibilities. The objective of this paper is to consider the potential damage from tsunamis to ports and moored ships in Japan and Korea. In addition, consideration will be given to how the construction plans of ports and harbors should be changed to cope with the threats from earthquakes and tsunamis.

  • During last decades several devastating tsunamis have been occurred around the Pacific Ocean area. These tsunamis not only killed many human beings but also caused serious property damages. In the southern sea of the Korean Peninsula, many islands are scattered. These islands are very vulnerable to unexpected tsunami attacks. In this study, a numerical model is employed to investigate behaviors of tsunamis around circular islands. Although a few studies have been reported on the run-up heights of tsunami attacking a circular island, the effects of oblique incidence of tsunamis on the run-up heights have not been examined in detail. The run-up heights of obliquely incident tsunamis will be studied.

  • Potential tsunamis generated in Okinawa Trough were simulated for the investigation of the propagation characteristics in the southwestern sea of Korean Peninsula. Shallow waters in the continental shelf of East China Sea and deep waters in Okinawa Trough play an important role in the propagation characteristics of the tsunamis generated in this region. The propagation characteristics can be classified into two phases according to the stage of propagation. In the first phase, the tsunamis propagate both northeast and southwest along the deep water of the trough. In the second phase, the tsunamis enter the continental shelf of the East China Sea at right angles to topographic contour lines. Simulated results show that the tsunamis generated in the Okinawa Trough give a weak influence to the southern and western coasts of Korea due to the special topography of the southwestern sea of Korean Peninsula.

  • To construct the practical forecast and warning system for distant tsunamis suitable for Korea the state-of-art of the forecast and warning systems of United States and Korea is investigated, and the action conducted by Korea for the case of 2011 East Japan Tsunami is also analysed. The tsunami sources and propagation characteristics of distant tsunamis that affect the Korean coastal area are considered along with the capability of earthquake monitering and numerical simulation and the available experts to propose the effective forecast and warning system for distant tsunamis.

  • Prognostic characteristics of hypothetical tsunamis in the East Sea are discussed based on numerical model simulations of linear long wave theory and wave ray for 28 source zones of tsunamigenic earthquake selected by the seismic gap theory. As a result, the propagation patterns of tsunamis due to hypothetical earthquake are presented and analyses also lead to selection of the geographical zones with low risk of tsunamis.

  • Generally, tsunamis are generated by the rapid crustal movements of the ocean floor. Other factors of tsunami generation include landslides on coastal and ocean floor slopes, glacier collapses, and meteorite collisions. In this study, two numerical analyses were conducted to examine the formation, propagation, and deformation properties of landslide tsunamis. First, LS-DYNA was adopted to simulate the formation and propagation processes of tsunamis generated by dropping rigid bodies. The generated tsunamis had smaller wave heights and wider waveforms during their propagation, and their waveforms and flow velocities resembled those of theoretical solitary waves after a certain distance. Second, after the formation of the landslide tsunami, a tsunami based on the solitary wave approximation theory was generated in a numerical wave tank (NWT) with a computational domain that considered the stability/steady phase. The comparison of two numerical analysis results over a certain distance indicated that the waveform and flow velocity were approximately equal, and the maximum wave pressures acting on the upright wall also exhibited similar distributions. Therefore, an effective numerical model such as LS-DYNA was necessary to analyze the formation and initial deformations of the landslide tsunami, while an NWT with the wave generation method based on the solitary wave approximation theory was sufficient above a certain distance.

  • Tsunamis triggered by undersea earthquakes have the characteristic of longer wavelengths and can propagate a very long distance. Although the occurrence frequency of tsunami is low, it can cause casualties and properties. Historically, tsunamis that occurred on the western coast of Japan attacked the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula and damaged the property and the loss of human life in 1983 and 1993. By tsunami in 1983 especially, 2 people were killed, and more than 200 casualties occurred. In addition, it caused 2 million dollars in property damage at Imwon Port. In 2011, The eastern cities of Japan: Iwate, Miyagi, Ibaraki, and Fukushima were damaged by a tsunami that occurred near onshore along the Pacific ocean and caused more than 300 billion dollars in property damage, and 20,000 casualties occurred. Moreover, those provoked nuclear power plant meltdown at Fukushima. In this study, it was carried out a relationship between maximum tsunami heights and fault parameters of earthquake: strike angle, dip angle, and slip angle at Imwon port. Those fault parameters are known that it does not relate to the magnitude of earthquake directly. Virtual tsunamis, which could be triggered by probable undersea earthquakes in the future, were investigated and mutual information based on probability and information theory was introduced to figure out the relationship between maximum tsunami height and fault parameters. Fault parameters were evaluated according to the strong relationship with maximum tsunami heights finally.

  • Catastrophic tsunamis triggered by undersea earthquakes may invade not only neighboring but also distant coastal communities. Many coastal communities and nuclear power plants are located along the Eastern Coast of the Korean Peninsula and they may be very vulnerable to unexpected tsunami attacks. In this companion review, field survey of tsunamis, prevention against tsunamis, furture research topics will be described.
