  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the social costs of inland trucking and maritime transport between Kwangyang Port in Korea and the Great Lakes in US. Also, this study compares these social costs each other, and finds the way how to internalize them for the efficiencies of national logistics policies. This study uses the Contingent Valuation Method to evaluate the social costs for the two transport modes in each country. The final result is that the social cost difference between inland trucking and maritime transport around US Great Lakes area is not so significant that there are not many chances to enhance the maritime transport in the region. However, in case of Korea, there is significant difference in social costs between the two transport modes, so that Korea government may have a lot of chances to improve the seaborne trade by way of various internalization policies.

  • This paper aims to analyse the relative efficiency of logistics facilities and suggest the policy alternatives for exploring and activating them. This study also divides the logistics facilities into airport terminals, logistics complexes, container terminals, and trucking freight terminals. For this purpose, the CCR-DEA as well as the BCC-DEA techniques are employed to show which part explains the primary cause of inefficiencies of each DMU(Decision Making Unit). The empirical results indicate that the efficiency of logistics complex is the lowest of all, while freight trucking terminal has the highest efficiency. This study also reveals that operation inefficiency is greater than scale inefficiency in most of DMUs, showing that much more effort be done for alleviating the cost resulting from irrational management.

  • This study suggests an approach for determining fleet size for container road transportation with dynamic demand in Korea. With the forecasted monthly container transportation data a year, a heuristic algorithm is developed to determine the number of company-owned trucks, mandated trucks, and rented trucks in order to minimize the expected annual operating cost, which is based on the solution technologies used in the aggregate production planning and the pickup-and-delivery problem. Finally the algorithm is tested for the problem how the trucking company determines the fleet size for transporting containers.

  • This paper proposes a self tuning fuzzy inference method by the genetic algorithm in the fuzzy-sliding mode control for a robot. Using this method, the number of inference rules and the shape of membership functions are optimized without an expert in robotics. The fuzzy outputs of the consequent part are updated by the gradient descent method. And, it is guaranteed that the selected solution become the global optimal solution by optimizing the Akaike's information criterion. The trajectory trucking experiment of the polishing robot system shows that the optimal fuzzy inference rules are automatically selected by the genetic algorithm and the proposed fuzzy-sliding model controller provides reliable tracking performance during the polishing process.

  • The Korean Government decided to reduce 30% of carbon emissions as of 2020, tightening regulations to reduce greenhouse gas in the international society. Therefore it will burden Korean logistics industry that overland trucking freight covers 70~80% of all, to lower emissions. As known, rail and coast(feeder) transport systems can be substituted for road transport but there are many problems to solve in Korean multimodal (intermodal) transport system such as time, cost, etc. Because of this, multimodal transport system should be improved systematically. For the reason, it aims to study a conceptual model with Thinking Process of TOC(theory of constraints) and System Dynamics to help improve the existing multimodal transport system for green logistics.

  • The field of vehicle routing is currently growing rapidly because of many actual applications in truckload and less than truckload trucking, courier services, door to door services, and many other problems that generally hinder the optimization of transportation costs in a logistics network. The rapidly increasing number of customers in such a network has caused problems such as difficulty in cost optimization in terms of getting a global optimum solution in an acceptable time. Fast algorithms are needed to find sufficient solutions in a limited time that can be used for real time scheduling. In this paper, the nearest L-method (NLNM) is proposed to obtain a vehicle routing solution. String neighbors of different lengths were chosen, tested and compared. The applied de crossing procedure is meant to solve the routes by NLNM by giving a better solution and shorter computation time than that of NLNM with long string neighbors.

  • Ninety percent of an average Chinese manufacturer's time spent is on logistics. Therefore, logistics presents the greatest challenge for multinational companies conducting businesses in China. Although more than 18,000 registered logistics companies exist in China, 85 percent of their revenues are generated from basic trucking and storage services. These facts indicate that China will need increasing presence of high-quality foreign 3PL providers, who are able to provide sophisticated IT systems, industry/operational expertise, standardized operating processes, and international networks, compared to their Chinese counterparts. However, they are facing complicated array of laws and regulations as well as difficulty of finding qualified people to fulfill these needs. There are a number of foreign 3PL providers engaged in China's logistics sector to reap a huge opportunity. Nevertheless, many 3PL foreign providers are still cautious about making large investments. Thus they arelooking for alliances that can provide complementarities instead. Another salient feature of strategy is to take over the transportation assets and warehousing of major Chinese manufacturers and distributors.

  • The need for effective information systems that can help in efficient transportation management has become essential. This study presents the potential benefits of developing a decision support system used by a trucking company for routing and scheduling. Our study investigates how customer exibility factors affect the utilization of transportation resources and establishes a vehicle scheduling model for better allocation of transportation resources with a time window. The results show vehicle savings from 25% up to 70% per day given different levels of exibility in delivery times. Increased capacity utilization can be achieved by considering only customer exibility in the model. Our study implies that incorporating customer exibility into the information system can help transportation organizations have the capability to gain control over management to cut costs and improve service.
