The Effect Analysis on the Container Terminal Productivity according to Combination of YT Pooling and Dispatching Rules (이송장비 풀링(Pooling)과 우선순위 규칙(Dispatching rule) 조합에 따른 컨테이너 터미널 생산성 효과분석)

  • Today, container terminals are fiercely competing to attract an increasing number of containers. As a way to improve terminal productivity, this study proposes two dispatching rules for yard truck allocation priorities. First, Multi-Attribute Dispatching Rule(MADR) is an allocation method to calculate the weighted sum of multiple factors affecting container terminal productivity and priority them. Especially, the workload of the quay crane was considered one of the factors to reduce the residence time of the ship. Second, Cycling Dispatching Rule(CDR) is the effective way to increase the number of double cycles that directly affect terminal productivity. To identify the effects of combinations of pooling and dispatching, a comparative experiments was performed on 8 scenarios that combined them. A simulation environment has been developed for experiments and the results have demonstrated that the combination of terminal level pooling and Multi-attribute Dispatching could be an excellent combination in KPIs consisting of GCR and delayed departure of ships, etc.

  • A cross docking operation involves multiple inbound trucks that deliver items from suppliers to a distribution center and multiple outbound trucks that ship items from the distribution center to customers. Based on customer demands, an inbound truck may have its items transferred to multiple outbound trucks. Similarly, an outbound truck can receive its consignments from multiple inbound trucks. The objective of this study is to find the best truck spotting sequence for both inbound and outbound trucks in order to minimize total operation time of the cross docking system under the condition that multiple visits to the dock by a truck to unload or load its consignments is allowed. The allocations of the items from inbound trucks to outbound trucks are determined simultaneously with the spotting sequences of both the inbound and outbound trucks.

  • Delay time of receiving and delivery is one of important factors that should be considered in the evaluation of the customer service level of a container terminal. In this study, dispatching rules are tested with the objective of minimizing the service delay time for arriving outside trucks. A dynamic programming model is suggested for a static dispatching problem in which all the truck arrivals are known in advance. In order to overcome the excessive computational time of the dynamic programming technique, several heuristic rules are suggested that can be applied in practices. A simulation study is carried out to test the performances of the heuristic rules.
