The paper presents the rotordynamic performance measurements and model predictions of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) air compressor supported on gas foil bearings (GFBs). The rotor has an impeller on one end and a thrust runner on the other end. The front (impeller side) and rear (thrust side) gas foil journal bearings (GFJBs) are located between the impeller and thrust runner to support the radial loads, and a pair of gas foil thrust bearings are located on both sides of the thrust runner to support the axial loads. The test GFJBs have a partial arc shim foil installed between the top foil and bump strip layers to enhance hydrodynamic pressure generation. During the rotordynamic performance tests, two sets of orthogonally installed eddy-current displacement sensors measure the rotor radial motions at the rotor impeller and thrust ends. A series of speed-up and coast-down tests to 100k rpm demonstrates the dominant synchronous (1X) rotor responses to imbalance masses without noticeable subsynchronous motions, which indicates a rotordynamically stable rotor-GFB system. Finite element analysis of the rotor determines the rotor free-free (bending) natural modes and frequencies well beyond the maximum rotating frequency. The predicted damped natural frequencies and damping ratios of the rotor-GFB system reveal rotordynamic stability over the speeds of interest. The imbalance response predictions show that the predicted critical speeds and rotor amplitudes strongly agree with the test measurements, thus validating the developed rotordynamic model.

Fretting wear test in room temperature air was performed to evaluate the wear mechanism of fuel rod using a fretting wear tester, which has been developed for experimental study. The main focus was to compare the wear behaviors of fuel rod against support springs at different contact geometries (i.e. concave and convex) and slip directions (axial and transverse). The wear on the tube was examined by the surface roughness tester, which measures the volume. The result indicated that with change of contact geometry from 5N of normal load to 0.1mm gap, wear volume of tube Increased in the condition of concave spring, but slowly decreased in convex spring. From the results of SEM observation, wear mechanism of each test condition was also depend on the above contact parameters. The wear mechanism of each test condition in room temperature air is discussed.

We have evaluated the performance and some physical properties of 25 automotive engine oils (21 domestic and 5 imported products) which are purchased on the market to verify the API(American Petroleum Institute) or ILSAC(International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee) certification marks attached on the products and to determine the necessity of the quality control of the engine oils on the market. 12 test items are chosen according to API engine oil specification, which are flash point, pour point, cold cranking simulator apparent viscosity, pumping viscosity, gelation index, HTHS(High Temperature High Shear viscosity), foam, high temperature foam, filterability, volatility, high temperature deposit(TEOST), phosphorus content. We have found one product which did not meet the API specification on gelation index, one on HTHS, four on foam, and one on volatility, which implies that the quality control system is in need to check the fidelity of the certification marks attached on the engine oils being marketed. In addition, this works raises the necessity of the upgrade of the present Korean engine oil specification.

The friction and wear characteristics of brake friction materials reinforced with aramid fiber, carbon fiber, glass fiber, and potassium titanate whiskers were investigated using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. In particular, the morphology of rubbing surfaces was carefully investigated to correlate the friction performance and properties of transfer films. The aramid fiber reinforced specimen showed severe oscillation of friction coefficient at low speed and low applied pressure. The carbon fiber reinforced specimen showing better friction stability exhibited uniform and stable transfer film than any other specimens. The glass fiber reinforced specimen showed unstable friction changes at high speed and high-applied pressure and the non-uniform transfer film was observed in both friction material and rotor surface. The potassium titanate whiskers reinforced specimen showed stable coherent transfer film. The wear test exhibited the potassium titanate whiskers reinforced specimen was lowest in wear amount and glass fiber reinforced specimen showed the severe wear.

It is well known that red blood cells (RBCs) are suffered from chronic stresses in systemic circulation. The objective of this study is to clarify the effect of the aging of RBCs on rheological properties and hemolysis. Initially, RBCs age fractionation was performed by using a high-speed centrifugation (15[min] at 1500[G]), then young and aged RBCs were suspended in plasma to adjust the hematocrit level of 40[%]. After this pretreatment, the viscosity was measured by using a capillary type and a cone-plate type viscometers, respectively, and the hemolysis test was carried out by a seesaw type shaker. Results from these experiments showed that the viscosity of the aged RBCs measured by the capillary viscometer was increased by 10[%] as compared with that of the young RBCs. Under the condition of all shear zones, the viscosity of the aged RBCs was increased in case of using the cone-plate type viscometer. And the hemolytic level was increased twice as the aging. The data obtained in this study indicated that the ability of aggregation of RBCs was increased and the deformability of RBCs membrane got lower with the aging. Furthermore, it was exhibited that the fragility of RBCs ’ membrane was increased with the aging.

Diesel engines have many sliding parts with solid body contact. For example, a piston-ring and a cylinder bore, a valve and a valve-seat, a cam and a valve tappet. These parts have a severe wear problem. during engine life times. During these times, the valve tappet has abnormal wear such as scuffing and pitting due to a high hertzian contact stress between the cam and the tappet. Excessive wear problems frequently occur to both the cam and the tappet. To solve these problems, we developed an advanced wear resistant tappet. The developed tappet consisted of a hard-metal wear part and a steel body. To increase a bonding strength, those two parts, were directly bonded to each other. Also to decrease a bonding temperature, we developed the composition of Ni-binder materials in the hard metal. To estimate the wear characteristics of the newly developed tappet, we performed wear tests and engine dynamo tests in order to compare them with a conventional Fe-base tappet. As a result, the newly developed tappet has better wear characteristics than those of the conventional tappet. In addition, we performed a 100,000km field-test, and the newly developed tappet showed much improved wear resistance.

The fractal dimension is the characteristics that can quantitatively define the irregularity in natural. It is useful in describing the morphology or various rubbed surface for hydraulic piston motor instead of the stylus profiling method. But fractal parameters had not constructed on the morphological characteristic or rubbed surface because of the insufficient knowledge about a conception of fractal dimension. In this study, for the purpose or applying fractal I parameters practically, we have suggested way to establish the morphological characteristic of rubbed surface with fractal parameters, and we carried out an experiment on the lubricant friction and wear by using Ball-ON-Disk type tester. Materials were the brass and the bronze which are used to slipper-pad in the hydraulic piston motor. We searched for fractal parameters or surface structure with the digital image processing, Surface fractal dimension can be determined by sum of intensity difference of surface pixel. Using the image processing and fractal parameters for rubbed surface in the friction and wear test, morphology of rubbed sur race can be effectively obtained by fractal dimensions.

Although the factors that cause the failure of orthopedic implants were not clearly determined, it was reported that the shapes of wear debris affect the tribological behavior of artificial implant. Many researches were conducted to examine the wear mechanism by debris but the role of debris shape in inflammatory reaction remains unclear. To observe the debris shape by addition of reinforcement, carbon nanotubes ( CNTs ) were added to ultra high molecular weight polyethylene ( UHMWPE ) to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNTs. CNTs which have a diameter of about 10-50 nm, while their length is about 3-5 nm were produced by the catalytic decomposition of the acetylene gas using a tube furnace. Plate on disc type wear test were performed to evaluate the tribological performance of UHMWPE composites reinforced with CNTs in lubricating condition ( bovine serum ). The wear losses of CNT added UHMWPE in bovine serum were significantly reduced. Worn surface and wear debris of UHMWPE with CNTs and without CNTs were compared to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNT on tribological behavior.
This paper presents the fabrication and performance inspection of a peristaltic micropump by flow simulation. The valve-less micropump using the diffuser/nozzle is consists of base plate, mid plate, top plate and connection tubes fur inlet and outlet. In detail, the base plate is composed of two diffuser nozzles and three chambers, the mid plate consists of a glass diaphragm for the volumetric change of the pumping chamber. The inlet and outlet tubes are connected at the top plate and the actuator fur pressing the diaphragm is located beneath the top plate. The micropump is fabricated on the silicon wafer by DRIE (Deep Reactive ion Etching) process. The pumping performances are tested by the pneumatic test rig and compared with the simulated results fur various dimensions of diffuser nozzles. The pumping characteristics of the micropump by the volumetric change at the pumping chamber is modeled and simulated by the commercial software of FLOW-3D. The simulated results shows that reverse flow is the inherent phenomena in the diffuser nozzle type micropump, but it can be reduced at the dual pumping chamber model.

This paper was studied on the wear-corrosion behavior of ductile cast iron in the acidic environment. In the dry atmosphere and variety of pH solution, wear-corrosion characteristics and friction coefficient of GCD 60 with various sliding speed and distance were investigated. And electrochemical polarization test of GCD 60 was examined in the environment of various pH value. The main results are as following : In the dry atmosphere, boundary friction appears below nearly 5 $kg_{f}$ of contact load, and it is considered that solid friction occurs over nearly 5 $kg_{f}$ of contact load. As pH value becomes low, wear-corrosion loss in the aqueous solution increases. As the corrosion environment is acidified, corrosion potential of GCD 60 becomes noble, polarization resistance becomes low, and corrosion current density increases.
