  • In this work we investigated the friction and wear characteristics of a magnesium alloy, which has been receiving much attention as a light metal in industrial applications such as automobiles and aerospace. Magnesium is one of the lightest structural material that has high specific strength, lightweight, low density and good formability. However, current issue of using magnesium alloy is that magnesium has weakness against temperature. As the temperature increases, magnesium undergoes poor creep resistance and ease of softening, and therefore, its mechanical strength decreases sharply. To solve this issue, a new type of magnesium alloy that retains high strength at high temperature has been proposed. The tribological behavior of this alloy was investigated using a tribotester with reciprocating motion and heating plate. A stainless steel ball was used as a counter surface. Results showed that extrusion process has similar wear behavior to the commonly used casting process but retains good mechanical strength and durability. The presence of an alloying element enhanced the wear properties especially in high temperature. This study is expected to be utilized as fundamental data for the replacement of high density materials currently used in mechanical industries to a much lighter and durable heat-resistant materials.

  • Boundary lubrication condition arises in most lubricated systems, especially during motion reversals and start up phase of operation. In this work electric contact resistance variations with respect to sliding conditions under lubrication is investigated The motivation was to improve the understanding of the contact condition in the boundary lubrication regime. It is shown that electrical contact resistance is sensitive to sliding speed and surface condition of the specimens. Also, phenomena such as run-in during the initial phase of sliding and lubricant pile up near the sliding pin could be observed. The results of this work will aid in better understanding of the metal to metal contact condition in lubricated systems.

  • In this paper, the frictional behavior according to the contact geometry was investigated using a micro-tribotester built inside a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis for friction was conducted as a method to interpret the contact condition. From the experimental results, it could be concluded that the relative dimensions and distribution of contact asperities on the surface could be predicted by the power spectrum and main frequency in the FFT analysis of the friction signal.

  • Wear map of silver coatings on AISI 52100 has been constructed to delineate the wear transition behavior with the change in operating conditions in various environments. Three main regimes were clearly identified: (i) elastic/plastic deformation of silver coating without failure. (ii) mild wear regime after initial failure of silver coating and (iii) severe wear regime. In the mild wear regime, the contact surfaces were covered with transfer layers of agglomerated wear particles. The transfer layer acted as a protective layer and resulted in low friction even after the initial failure of the coated films, whose characteristics were strongly dependent on both the operating and environmental conditions. Also, the existence of the critical sliding speed, above which no transfer layer was able to form, was discussed in the work.

  • In this work, the friction and wear behavior under' various lubrication regimes were investigated. The objective of this work is to develop an Accelerated Life Test (ALT) method for the durability evaluation of a machine element which is operated under lubrication. Electric contact resistance and frictional forces were measured with respect to a wide range of the loads and speeds under various lubrication regimes using a pin-on-disk type tribotester. From the experimental results, it could be found that an effective and reliable ALT method could be achieved by controlling the lubrication regime through the measurements of friction coefficient and contact resistance with respect to load and sliding speed.

  • Carbon fiber polymeric composites have been widely used in bearing materials under high pressure without oil-lubrication due to their self-lubricating characteristics. However, the severe wear of carbon composite surface occurs due to the generation of wear debris when the pressure applied on the composite surface is higher than the critical value of composite surface. In this work, in order to remove wear debris continuously during sliding operation, composite specimens with many micro-grooves on their sliding surfaces were devised. To investigate the effect of wear debris on the tribological behavior of carbon/epoxy composites, dry sliding tests were performed with respect to applied pressure using the composite specimens with and without micro-grooves. From the measurement of friction coefficients and wear rates, a model for the effect of wear debris on the friction and wear of composites was proposed.

  • The results of the electrical contact conductivity of multi-contact spots accounting the surface roughness and the non-conductive films of different origins such as air, water, cutting oil, and machining oil are presented. The array of metal spheres compressed between two flat plates has been used for simulation of the contact behavior of multiple contact of solids, under normal loading. Measurement of electrical contact resistance has been made using the equipment providing the adequate accuracy in the range of micro Ohms. The data on electrical contact resistance have been compared with theoretical predictions using the multiple contact model of constriction resistance. The effect of single spot number and array on conductivity of contact has been evaluated. The results of the experiments show that the contact resistance are closely related to the number of loading cycles, form of surface roughness, and presence of non-conductive films that reduce the size of the real electrical contact spots.

  • Automotive brake pads with four different sizes of zircon particles (average sizes of 1㎛, 6㎛, 75㎛, and 140㎛, respectively) were investigated to evaluate the size effect of abrasive particles on friction performance. Results showed that the brake pads with the larger size of zircon particles tend to show better frictional stability and low pad wear. However, the rotor surface was severely abraded in the case of using larger zircon particles. On the other hand, the small zircon particles in the pads showed the fast increase of the coefficient of friction with friction force oscillation and the tendency was pronounced at low sliding speeds. The brake pads with small particle sizes also exhibited strong fade phenomena at elevated temperatures.

  • A resin bonded copper-graphite brush was investigated to evaluate the characteristics electrical signal transmission through a sliding contact as a function of the relative amount of graphite and copper in the brush. Particular attention was given to the correlation between electrical signal fluctuation and tribological properties in an electrical sliding contact system. A ring-on-block type tribotester was used for this experiment and the ring was made from pure copper. Results showed that a copper-graphite brush at a particular composition range exhibited the most stable frictional behavior with a minimum voltage drop. The amount of voltage drop at the friction interface was affected by the surface roughness, transfer film formation at the friction interface, and the real area of contact. Microscopic observations and the surface analysis showed a good agreement with the results from this experiment. The results also indicated that the electrical signal flunctuation was directly associated with the oscillation of the coefficient of friction during sliding by nanoscale variation of contacts at the friction interface.

  • There has been a growing concern for the use of mineral oil based lubricants because of the worldwide interest in environmental issues. This has prompted the use of vegetable oils as more environmentally acceptable base fluids. In view of this, four-ball wear test was carried out to investigate the tribological behavior of selected vegetable oils blended with ZDDP, TCP and DBP under high speed and temperate conditions. Of the additive evaluated, the new additive, DBP has provided antiwear performance superior to the two other additives more commonly used. This superior performance by DBP is probably caused by different wear mechanism. This wear mechanism has been evidenced by the surface analysis of worn balls conducted using optical microscope and EDAX.
