The tribological properties of acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) filled with two kinds of carbon black filler were examined. Different types of Semi-Reinforcing Furnace (SRF), and High Abrasion Furnace (HAF) blacks were used as filler material to test the influence of carbon black particle size on the friction and wear of NBR. Results from tribological tests using a ball on disk method showed that the smaller HAF particles were more effective for reducing the wear of NBR during frictional sliding. The hardness, elastic modulus at 100% elongation, and elongation at break were measured to examine the correlation between the effects of carbon black on the mechanical and tribological properties of the NBR specimens. The wear tracks of the NBR specimens were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The wear tracks for NBR with different ratios of SRF and HAF showed clearly different abrasion patterns. Mechanisms for the friction and wear behavior of NBR with different sizes of carbon black filler were proposed using evidence from wear track observation, as well as the mechanical and tribological test results.
This study investigates the effect of the surface microstructure on the tribological characteristics of glass substrates. Chemical etching using hydrofluoric acid and ammonium hydrogen fluoride was employed to create controlled asperity structures on glass surfaces. By varying the etching time from 10 to 50 min, different surface morphologies were obtained and characterized using optical microscopy, surface roughness measurements, and water contact angle analysis. Friction tests were performed using a stainless steel ball as the counter surface to evaluate the tribological behavior of the etched specimens. The results showed that the specimen etched for 20 min exhibited the lowest and most stable friction coefficient, which was attributed to the formation of a uniform and dense asperity structure that effectively reduced the stress concentration and wear at the contact interface. In contrast, specimens etched for shorter (10 min) or longer (30-50 min) durations displayed higher friction coefficients and accelerated wear owing to nonuniform asperity structures that led to local stress concentration. Optical microscopy of the wear tracks further confirmed the superior wear resistance of the 20-minute etched specimen. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing the etching process parameters to achieve the desired surface morphology for enhanced tribological performance, suggesting the potential of chemical etching as a surface modification technique for various materials in tribological applications.

Machines that normally operate under fluid film lubricated condition also experience surface damage. This is largely due to the failure of the lubricant film which leads to boundary lubrication. Thus, it is important to have a good understanding of boundary lubrication behavior. In this paper the major tribological parameters that influence the boundary lubrication properties are evaluated. It is shown that disk roughness, hardness and normal load affect the friction and wear of metals in boundary lubrication. Also, the mechanism of surface damage is attributed to abrasion and wear particle interaction.

Tribological phenomena such as wear or transfer are influenced by various factors and have complicated behavior. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the behavior of the gribological phenomena because of their complexity. But, those tribological phenomena can be considered simply as to transfer micro material particles from the sliding interface. Then, we proposed the numerical simulation method for tribological phenomena such as wear of transfer using stochastic process models. This numerical simulation shows the change of the 3-D surface topography. In this numerical simulation, initial 3-D surface toughness data are generated by the method of non-causal 2-D AR (autoregressive) model. Processes of wear and transfer for some generated initial 3-D surface data are simulated. Simulation results show successfully the change of the 3-D surface topography.
Various carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are added into the epoxy matrix as reinforcements to investigate the effect on the wear behavior. Effects to the tribological properties of different loading concentrations and types of surface modification are investigated by using a linear reciprocal wear tester. As increasing the concentration of CNTs shows the reduction of the wear loss. Moreover, surface modified CNTs give better tribological property than as produced CNTs. It is due that the functional groups on the surface of CNTs increase the interfacial bonding between CNTs and epoxy matrix through chemical bonding. Changes in worn surface morphology are observed by optical microscope and SEM to investigate the wear behavior. CNTs in the epoxy matrix near the surface are exposed and it becomes the lubricating working film on the worn surface. It reduces the friction and results in the lower surface roughness morphology in the epoxy matrix as increasing the contents of the CNTs.

We have studied on the tribological characteristics of surface modification by Arc Ion Implantation(AIP) coating method. Coating materials were deposited by the Titanium carbide(TiC) and Titanium nitride(TiN). An experimental process was established to determine the tribological characteristics of friction and wear behaviour with the variation of applied load, temperature and the time by the Falex friction and wear test machine. The results, It can be improved that when the surface modification of hard coatings(TiC, TiN) was deposited steel, the tribological characteristics become better. It is argued that improved because of excellence of the anti-wear, the extreme pressure properties and the heat stability.
The tribological properties of ceramics are very important in the application to engineering ceramic parts such as mechanical seal slurry valve disc and so on. In this study the effect of graphite addition on the mechanical and tribological properties of RBSC/graphite composites were investigated. The composites were prepared by adding graphite powder to the mixture of SiC powder metallic siliconcarbon black and alumina. Bending strength water absorption friction coefficient the amount of worn out material at a certain time and maximum surface roughness(Rmax) of the prepared composites were measured and crystalline phases were examined with XRD. The composite containing 5 vol% graphite powder showed improved bending strength due to high green density and decreased friction coefficient and wear resistance. The friction coefficient and the wear resistance of the composite were increased by adding graphite powder up to 10 vol% They decreased however as increasing the amount of graphite powder more that 10vol% There was no linear relationship between the tribological properties and bending strength of the composites.

Although the factors that cause the failure of orthopedic implants were not clearly determined, it was reported that the shapes of wear debris affect the tribological behavior of artificial implant. Many researches were conducted to examine the wear mechanism by debris but the role of debris shape in inflammatory reaction remains unclear. To observe the debris shape by addition of reinforcement, carbon nanotubes ( CNTs ) were added to ultra high molecular weight polyethylene ( UHMWPE ) to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNTs. CNTs which have a diameter of about 10-50 nm, while their length is about 3-5 nm were produced by the catalytic decomposition of the acetylene gas using a tube furnace. Plate on disc type wear test were performed to evaluate the tribological performance of UHMWPE composites reinforced with CNTs in lubricating condition ( bovine serum ). The wear losses of CNT added UHMWPE in bovine serum were significantly reduced. Worn surface and wear debris of UHMWPE with CNTs and without CNTs were compared to investigate the reinforcement effect of CNT on tribological behavior.
This experimental study presents tribological characteristics under boundary lubrication contacts associated with electrorheolocal (ER) fluid. ER fluid is prepared by using phosphorated starch particles and silicone oil. Experimental apparatus of tribological tester is designed and constructed to evaluate tribological characteristics of pin specimens. Wear tests under boundary lubrication of ER fluid are experimentally performed under consideration of several operational factors such as normal load, sliding distance, sliding speed and specimen materials: steel, copper and aluminum. After wear test, microscopic surface changes of the worn pin specimens are analyzed in order to investigate measured wear characteristics by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) as well as surface profilometer. In addition, the chemical wear characteristics are investigated by using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Moreover, friction coefficient measurements under different materials of pin specimens are conducted for the tribological investigations. In order to verify the effect of starch phosphate particles in ER fluid, the wear test results with ER fluid are compared with test results with only silicone oil. The results clearly present that the phosphorated starch based ER fluid shows the stabilized wear as well as friction characteristics after run-in operations, but the wear rate under ER fluid is increased.
Recently, much of the current development in surface modification engineering are focused on multilayered coatings. Multilayered coatings have the potential to improve the tribological properties. Four different multilayered coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel. The prepared samples are designed as $WC-Ti_{0.6}Al_{0.4}N$, $WC-Ti_{0.53}Al_{0.47}N$, $WC-Ti_{0.5}Al_{0.5}N$ and $WC-Ti_{0.43}Al_{0.57}N$. The multilayered coatings were investigated with respect to coating surface and cross-sectional morphology, roughness, adhesion, hardness, porosity and tribological behavior. Especially, wear tests of four multilayered coatings were performed by using a ball-on-disc configuration with a linear sliding speed of 0.017 m/sec, 5.38 N load. The tests were carried out at room temperature in air by employing AISI 52100 steel ball ($H_R=66$) having a diameter of 10 mm. The surface morphology, and topography of the wear scars of samples and balls have been determined by using scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). Results have showed an improved wear resistance of the $WC-Ti_{1-x}Al_xN$ coatings with increasing of Al concentration. $WC-Ti_{0.43}Al_{0.57}N$ coating with the lower surface roughness and porosity with good adhesion enhanced wear resistance.
