This paper is results of experimental and nunerical works on the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel. Centrifuge model tests were performed to simulate the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnels having cross sections of national road and subway tunnels. Model experiments were carried out with changing the cut slope and the slope of filling ground surface. Displacements of tunnel lining resulted from artificially accelerated gravitational force up to 40g of covered material used in model tests, were measured during centrifuge model tests. In model tests, Jumunjin Standard Sand with the relative density of 80 % and the zinc plates were used for the covered material and the flexible tunnel lining, respectively. Basic soil property tests were performed to obtain it's the property of Jumumjin Standard Sand. Shear strength parameters of Jumunjin Standard Sand were obtained by performing the triaxial compression tests. Direct shear tests were also carried out to find the mechanical properties of the interface between the lining and the covered material. Numerical analysis with the commercially available program of FLAC were performed to compare with results of centrifuge model experiment In numerical modelling. Mohr-Coulomb elasto-plastic constitutive model was used to simulaye the behavoor of Jumunjin Standard Sand and the interface element between the lining and the covered material was implemented to simulate the interaction between them. Compared results between model tests and numerical estimation with respect to displacement of the lining showed in good agreements.
The ground of Taegu area consists mainly of shales with elastic sedimentary rocks. These shales have a nonhomogeneous and anisotropic characteristics. So their physical and mechanical properties are very different due to the angles($\beta$ value) of bedding planes of sedimentary rock. In this study, the physical and mechanical characteristics of shales in Taegu area are studied by performing all kinds of rock test. According to results of test, apparent specific gravity of shale decreases as the $\beta$ value increases. On the contrary, porosity and absorption increase. Elastic wave velocity shorts the highest value at the $90^{\circ}$. And Young's modulus shows the maximum value at the $30^{\circ}$. The uniaxial strength, triaxial strength, cohesion and angle of friction show the minimum value at the $60^{\circ}$respectively.
A finite element nonlinear stress-deformation model with multi-interface element is applied to the stability analysis of waste landfill slope. Strength parameters of waste and geosynthetic materials are obtained from the triaxial test of waste and the direct shear test of geosynthetics, respectively. The landfill models used for the numerical models are fit to regulations of the Korean waste management law. The results of the strength tests showed linear behavior for the waste and nonlinear behavior for the eosynthectic materials. The stability analysis with multi-interface element for the geosynthetic materials in the liner system showed large shear stress and slippage at the boundary of the foundation and the slope of the waste fill. This analysis verified the necessity of multi-interface analysis for waste landfills with composite liners.
This research, in order to study the effects of initial shear stress of anisotropically consolidated sand that has 0.558% fines, performed several undrained static and dynamic triaxial test. To simulate the real field conditions, loose and dense samples were prepared. Besides, the cyclic shear strength of Nakdong River sand under various combinations of initial static shear stress, stress path, pore water pressure and residual strength relationship was studied. By using Bolton's theory, peak internal friction angle at failure which has considerable effects on the relative density and mean effective stress was determined. In p'- q diagram, the phase transformation line moves closer to the failure line as the specimen's initial anistropical consolidation stress increases. Loose sands were more affected than dense sands. The increase of consolidation stress ratio from 1.4 to 1.8 had an effect on liquefaction resistance strength resulting from the increase of relativity density, and showed similar CSR values in dense specimen condition.
The performance of the improved soil against liquefaction depends upon the chemical density, and it has been decided on the basis of the unconfined compressive strength of the improved soil up to date. On the other hand, several authors have proposed that the stiffness degradation could be treated as the clue for the judgment of the possibility of liquefaction. In this study, therefore, the stiffness degradation of the improved soil was estimated as the resistance against liquefaction by using the strain controlled cyclic triaxial test equipment. Based on the test results, it is concluded that the chemically treated sand can resist against the liquefaction in aspect of the reduction in effective stress and in the stiffness. Furthermore, even in the case of low chemical density, such as 2% in this study, has enough liquefaction resistance when compared with the 5~6% which often used in practical design. Considering this fact, the design of chemical density based on the unconfined strength can lead the overestimation in chemical density, and chemical density can be reduced when considering the stiffness reduction shown in this study.
To evaluate the engineering characteristics of aggregate base materials, cyclic triaxial, CBR and permeability tests were performed for 15 samples. The CBR values of aggregate base materials have wide range from 32 to 110(average 81) and the amount of swelling in submerged conditions has below 0.04mm. The Modulus of aggregate base materials were significantly affected by volumetric stress, linear volumetric model was best for fitting. The modulus of aggregate base materials were determined within range of 100MPa~600MPa, 80~270 and 0.1~0.6 for model coefficient $k_1$ and $k_2$ respectively. The empirical correlation model was suggested that prediction the modulus from the basic properties obtained from particle size distribution test and compaction test. The coefficient of determination of the proposed correlation model was 0.423 for model coefficient $k_1$, 0.920 for model coefficient $k_2$ and 0.872 for modulus with stress level.

Experiments both in laboratory and field were performed to compare and analyze the characteristics of alluvial clay. The alluvial clay was sampled in test site in which large-scaled tests for the part of the site are under process to suggest the rational method for alluvial clay and the criterion for ground settlement monitoring system. The followings were observed through the experiments : 1. Natural water content, plastic limit, and liquid limit of alluvial clay composed of highly fine grains were 40~80%, 10~20%, and 30~55%, respectively. The values of these properties were relatively small at the ground surface, while the values showed maximum at G.L.- l0m and gradually decreased below the level. 2. Shear strength of alluvial clay was proportionally increased to the depth. Unconfined and triaxial compressive strengths were 0.2~0.6kgf/$cm^2$ and 0.1~0.3kgf/$cm^2$, respectively. 3. Compression index and secondary compression index showed maximum values at G.L.-l0m and gradually decreased below the level. The value of consolidation coefficient was relatively large at the ground surface, constant with decreasing the depth, and incresed when G.L. was below -20m. 4. Piezocone test appeared that alluvial clay with N value of 2~4 was uniformly distributed with 20~ 30m thickness from the ground surface, sand seam was nonuniformly distributed, and penetration pore pressure was 0.8 ~ 1 times of the hydrostatic pressure. Undrained shear strength and consolidation coefficient were 0.04 ~ 0.76kgf / $cm^2$ and $2.88{\times} 10{^-4}~1.3{\times} 10{^-2} cm^2/s$ respectively.

The shear strength reduction finite element method (SSRFEM) is a powerful tool for slope stability analysis. The factor of safety (FOS) of the slope can be easily calculated only through reducing effective cohesion (c′) and tangent of effective friction angle ($tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$) in equal proportion. However, this method may not be applicable to soil slope under wetting-drying cycles (WDCs), because the influence of WDCs on c′ and $tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$ may be different. To research the method of estimating FOS of soil slopes under WDCs, this paper presents an experimental study firstly to investigate the effects of WDCs on the parameters of shear strength and stiffness. Twelve silty clay samples were subjected to different number of WDCs and then tested with triaxial test equipment. The test results show that WDCs have a degradation effect on shear strength (${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_3)_f$, secant modulus of elasticity ($E_s$) and c′ while little influence on ${\varphi}^{\prime}$. Hence, conventional SSRFEM which reduces c′ and $tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$ in equal proportion cannot be adopted to compute the FOS of slope under conditions of WDCs. The SSRFEM should be modified. In detail, c′ is merely reduced among shear strength parameters, and elasticity modulus is reduced correspondingly. Besides, a new approach based on sudden substantial changes in the displacement of marked nodes is proposed to identify the slope failure in SSRFEM. Finally, the modified SSRFEM is applied to compute the FOS of a slope example.

To improve ride quality and running stability of high speed train(HST), it is important that connection between coaches adopts the articulated bogies by using a gangway ring, unlike the conventional independent bogies assembled with car bodies. Although the gangway ring should be ensured absolute safety against passenger movement between coaches during train operation, there is still a lack of quantitative durability criteria of that. Therefore, in order to improve the passenger safety of HST, it is important to study the test requirements on durability evaluation for the ring. In this study, seven mixed loading cases were derived from the triaxial loading(vertical/lateral/longitudinal) modes. The safety factor of each component is at least 2.4 or more from the results of the finite element analysis. In addition, fatigue safety was evaluated through durability analysis from the viewpoint of strain-life design. Durability tests for the gangway ring carried out a total of 10 million cycles in 4 phases load conditions. After the durability test, the defect of each component was investigated using nondestructive testing techniques.
In this study, the infiltration behavior of slopes composed of mixed soils with clay contents of 0%, 5%, and 10% in weathered Gneiss soil, which is a representative weathered soil in Korea, was investigated, and the stability of unsaturated slopes due to rainfall infiltration was examined. For this, in this study, the soil water characteristic curve was obtained through the water retention test, and the strength constant was obtained through the triaxial compression test. Based on the obtained results, the influence of clay content and antecedent rainfall effect (i.e., initial suction) on the formation of saturated zone (i.e., wetting band) and slope stability due to rainfall infiltration was examined through infiltration and stability analyses. As a result, it was found that the hig her the initial suction, the slower the formation of the saturated zone on the slope. In addition, it was found that as the clay content increases, the shear strength of the ground increases and the resistance to rainfall infiltration increases, and eventually the slope stability is greatly improved.
