  • In this paper, arbitrarily-shaped microstrip patch antenna in multi-layered is analyzed using spatial domain MoM. The triangular patch function is adopted here as the expansion function for planar arbitrarily-shaped microstrip. For example, an edge-fed rectangular patch antenna on a single-layered substrate is analyzed. The results show the agreement between the calculation and measurement.

  • In order to generate meshes automatically for finite element analysis of complex structures such as aircraft, a large number of triangular elements are typically created. However, triangular elements are less accurate than rectangular elements, so it is difficult to obtain a reliable solution. This problem can be improved through the meshfree method using the back cell integration. However, this method also causes some problems such as over-use of the integration points and inefficiency of the integral domain. In order to improve these problems, a method of performing integration by setting the integral area based on a node basis has been proposed, but in the case of incompressible material problems, the numerical accuracy deteriorates due to the vibration phenomenon of the solution. Therefore, in this paper, the modified meshfree method is proposed which sets the integral domain as an element domain instead of the nodal domain, and the proposed method improves the numerical instability caused by the conventional meshfree method without decreasing the accuracy regardles of the shape of integral domain. The effectiveness of the modified meshfree method is verified by using 2-D examples.

  • In this study, a numerical method for a time-domain acoustic wave backscattering analysis is established based on a physical optics and a Fourier transform. The frequency responses of underwater targets are calculated based on physical optics derived from the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral equation by applying Kirchhoff approximation and the time-domain signals are simulated taking inverse fast Fourier transform to the obtained frequency responses. Particularly, the adaptive triangular beam method is introduced to calculate the areas impinged directly by acoustic incident wave and the virtual surface concept is adopted to consider the multiple reflection effect. The numerical analysis result for an acoustic plane wave field incident normally upon a square flat plate is coincident with the result by the analytic time-domain physical optics derived theoretically from a conventional physical optics. The numerical simulation result for a hemi-spherical end-capped cylinder model is compared with the measurement result, so that it is recognized that the presented method is valid when the specular reflection effect is predominant, but, for small targets, gives errors due to higher order scattering components. The numerical analysis of an idealized submarine shows that the established method is effectively applicable to large and complex-shaped underwater targets.

  • Fully and partially grown hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on Cu foil, synthesized by chemical vapor deposition method, was studied using Raman and SEM measurements. Fully and partially grown samples were successfully made from borane-ammonia complex to controlling pressure and growth time. The fully grown h-BN and partially grown h-BN exhibits a ~ 1370 cm-1 B-N vibrational mode (E2g). Especially, well-aligned triangular h-BN monolayer was observed on some domain of Cu foil using SEM measurements.

  • A modified Delaunay triangulation technique is tested for complicated computational domain. While a simple geometry. both in topology and geometry, has been well discretized into triangular elements, a complex geometry having difficulty in triangulation had to be divided into small sub-domains of simpler shape. The present study presents a modified Delaunay triangulation method based on the data structure of geometric modeller. This approach greatly enhances the reliability of triangulation, especially in complicated computational domain. We have shown that efficiency of Delaunay triangulation can be much improved by using both the GUI (Graphic User Interface) and OOP (Object-Oriented Programming).

  • In this paper, the effect of material-temperature dependent on the wave propagation of a cantilever beam composed of functionally graded material (FGM) under the effect of an impact force is investigated. The beam is excited by a transverse triangular force impulse modulated by a harmonic motion. Material properties of the beam are temperature-dependent and change in the thickness direction. The Kelvin-Voigt model for the material of the beam is used. The considered problem is investigated within the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory by using energy based finite element method. The system of equations of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equations. The obtained system of linear differential equations is reduced to a linear algebraic equation system and solved in the time domain and frequency domain by using Newmark average acceleration method. In order to establish the accuracy of the present formulation and results, the comparison study is performed with the published results available in the literature. Good agreement is observed. In the study, the effects of material distributions and temperature rising on the wave propagation of the FGM beam are investigated in detail.

  • We report design and simulation of a two-dimensional (2D) silicon-based nanophotonic crystal as an optical insulator to enhance the light emission efficiency of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The device was designed in a manner that a triangular array silicon photonic crystal light insulator has a square trench in the middle where LED can be placed. By varying the normalized radius in the range of 0.3-0.5 using plane wave expansion method (PWEM), we found that the normalized radius of 0.45 creates a large band gap for transverse electric (TE) polarization. Subsequently a series of light propagation simulation were carried out using 2D and three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD). The designed silicon-based light insulator device shows optical characteristics of a region in which light propagation was forbidden in the horizontal plane for TE light with most of the visible light spectrum in the wavelength range of 450 nm to 600 nm.

  • An efficient tidal model, TIDE which is an iterative type, nonlinear finite element model has developed for the analysis of the tidal movement in the coastal area which is characterized by irregular boundaries and bottom topography. Traditional time domain finite element models have been in difficulties with requirement for high eddy viscosity coefficients and small time steps to insure numerical instability. These problems are overcome by operating in the frequency domain with an elaborate grid system by combining the triangular and quadrilateral shape grids. Furthermore, in order to handle non-linearity which will be more significant in the shallow region, an iterative scheme with least square error minimization algorithm has been implemented in the model. The results of TIDE model are agreed with the analytical solutions in a rectangular channel under the condition of tidal waves entering the channel closed at one end.

  • In this paper, we analyze the transient electromagnetic response from three-dimensional(3-D) dielectric bodies using a time-domain PMCHW(Poggio, Miller, Chang, Harrington, Wu) formulation. The solution method in this paper is based on the Galerkin's method that involves separate spatial and temporal testing procedures. Triangular patch basis functions are used for spatial expansion and testing functions for arbitrarily shaped 3-D dielectric structures. The time-domain unknown coefficients of the equivalent currents are approximated by a set of orthonormal basis functions that are derived from the Laguerre polynomials. These basis functions are also used as the temporal testing. Numerical results involving equivalent currents and far fields computed by the proposed method are presented.
