  • Number of 1-year-old cone in Pinus koraiensis was influenced by the factors consisting of the tree form. Number of cones increased with increasing DBH, diameter, volume of crown and number of forked stems. However, tree height, crown length, and the ratio of crown diameter to crown length showed no significant relations with number of cones.

  • We analyzed the correlation among fruit bearing branch (FBB) and shoot and fruit characteristics in order to select the length of FBB suitable for producing high-quality fruits of 'Soomee', a peach tree developed in Korea. The length and diameter of FBB were 26.1 cm and 6.1 mm, respectively, shoot and leaf number per FBB were 3.2 and 38.6, respectively. Of these, the coefficient of variation was very high in the shoots and leaf number. The average weight and soluble solid content (SSC) of fruit were 298.6 g and 12.2 Brix, respectively, and coefficient of variation of the fruit weight was 18.0 %, which was higher than that of SSC. As the FBB of 10-20 cm and 20-30 cm length per tree were 27.1 % and 25.4 %, respectively, the sum of short and middle FBB frequency per tree was more than 50 %. Fruits of 250-350 g and 11.0-13.0 Brix per tree were distributed in 68.6 % and 74.0 %, respectively. As a result of correlation analysis, fruit weight and shoot number were affected by the length of FBB. In particular, length of FBB showed the relation of fruit weight with $y=-0.0482x^2+2.4512x+277.36$. As a result, the length of FBB that can maximize fruit weight was analyzed as 25.4 cm. Therefore, in the filed, the suitable FBB for producing 'Soomee' peach is estimated to be about 20-30 cm.

  • For Automatic Meter Reading System, good topology of check machines, concentrators, and repeaters in client field is important. Steiner Minimum Tree is a minimum cost tree connecting all given nodes with introducing Steiner points. In this paper, an efficient mechanism allocating and connecting check machines, concentrators and repeaters which are essential elements in automatic meter reading system is proposed, which conducts repeated applications of building approximate Minimum Steiner Trees. In the mechanism, input nodes and Steiner points might correspond to check machine, concentrators or repeaters and edges might do to the connections between them. Therefore, through suitable conversions and processes of them, an efficient network for automatic meter reading system with both wired and wireless communication techniques could be constructed. In our experiment, for 1000 input nodes and 200 max connections per node, the proposed mechanism shortened the length of produced network by 19.1% comparing with the length of Minimum Spanning Tree built by Prim's algorithm.

  • Seeds of Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge were collected from two plantations and two superior trees in Inner Mongolia: and one plantation and one superior tree in Liaoning, China in late August, 2011. Yellowhorn or goldenhorn is an important tree species, from the aspects of source of edible oil and biodiesel and pioneering capacity of degraded and desert land. Characteristics investigated were seed length, width, and weight: weight and volume of 1,000 seeds: and weight and volume of one-liter seeds. The seeds of Qingsonglingxiang No. 1, growing alone in an open space, showed the highest values in seed length (16.08 mm), width (14.48 mm) and weight (1.40 g), while those of Tree No. 160 in Ar Khorqin Banner were the lowest ones: that is, 11.48mm for length, 11.81 mm for width, and 0.73 g for weight, respectively. Traits of seeds varied quite much between trees and among areas; for example, Tree No. 38 and No. 160 produced quite different seeds in several traits, although they are adjacent to each other in the same farm. Weight of 1,000 seeds varied from 718.0 g to 1,010.1 g and volume from 0.76 L to 1.52 L. Weight of one-liter seeds were 522.3 g to 688.2 g, while the number of seeds were 603 to 935. Seeds which were soaked in the water at $4^{\circ}C$ for 2 days showed the highest germination rate (89%) in a 30-day test, which was about 10% to 40% higher than those of non-treatment and dipping treatment at $36^{\circ}C$ followed by keeping under room temperature for 2 days. 81% of seeds in the wet sand at room temperature germinated, while 23% of seeds deprived of seed coat germinated. It is necessary to understand seed traits to select superior clones or provenances for the increased, unfluctuating production of seed.

  • The rectilinear Steiner tree problem is to find a minimum-length rectilinear interconnection of a set of terminals in the plane. It is well known that the solution to this problem will be the minimal spanning tree (MST) on some set Steiner points. A hybrid evolutionary algorithm is introduced based upon the Prim algorithm. The Prim algorithm for the fitness evaluation requires heavy calculation time. The fitness value of parents is inherited to their child and the fitness value of child is estimated by the inherited structure of tree. We introduce four alternative evolutionary algorithms, Experiment result shows that the calculation time is reduced to 25% without loosing the solution quality by using the fitness estimation.

  • Size characteristics of three widely used landscape trees were analized to establish a methodology of size prediction as time Passes. Tree height, tree width, stem diameter(breast or surface), canopy length and tree age were measured directly and indirectly(by using photograph), and the data were analized by using regression analysis through PC-SAS. The results are summarized as follows : 1. Zelkova serrata MAKINO showed relatively slow growth rate and the tree form was changed as aged. Size predictions were available by using the regression equations listed below : Surface diameter = 0.8293 x AGE Tree height = 0.4109(0.8293 x AGE) - 0.0039(0.7273 x AGE)$^2$Tree width = 0.3240(0.8293 x AGE) - 0.0024(0.1293 x AGE)$^2$Canopy length = 0.1337(0.8293 x AGE) - 0.0020(0.7293 x AGE)$^2$2. Pinus strobus L. showed relatively fast growth rate and the tree form did not change much as aged. Size predictions were available by using the regression equations listed below. Breast diameter = 0.756 x AGE Tree height = 0.7695(0.756 x AGE) - 0.0164(0.75\ulcorner x AGE)$^2$Tree width = 0.4331(0.756 x AGE) - 0.0079(0.75\ulcorner x AGE)$^2$Canopy length = 0.1365(0.756 x AGE) - 0.0032(0.75f x AGE)$^2$ 3. In case of Magnolia denudata DESROUX, tree form was determined relatively earlier than the other two species. Si2e predictions were available by using the regression equations listed below : Surface diameter = 0.88 x AGE Tree height = 0.5412(0.88 x AGE) - 0.0110(0.88 x AGE)$^2$ Tree width = 0.3752(0.88 x AGE) - 7.0061(0.88 x AGE)$^2$Canopy length = 0.1110(0.88 x AGE) - 0.0022(0.88 x AGE)$^2$ This study aimed to find a way to predict size change of landscaping plants. This methodology will be applied to a wide range of landscape plants to provide practical data to landscape designers.

  • The FP-tree(Frequency Pattern Tree) mining association rules algorithm was proposed to improve mining performance by reducing DB scan overhead dramatically, and it is recognized that the performance of it is better than that of any other algorithms based on different approaches. But the FP-tree algorithm needs a few more memory because it has to store all transactions including frequent itemsets of the DB. This paper implements a FP-tree algorithm on a general purpose UNK system and compares it with the DHP(Direct Hashing and Pruning) algorithm which uses hash tree and direct hash table from the point of memory usage and execution time. The results show surprisingly that the FP-tree algorithm is poor than the DHP algorithm in some cases even if the system memory is sufficient for the FP-tree. The characteristics of the test data are as follows. The site of DB is look, the number of total items is $1K{\sim}7K$, avenrage length of transactions is $5{\sim}10$, avergage size of maximal frequent itemsets is $2{\sim}12$(these are typical attributes of data for large-scale convenience stores).

  • Objective: With the background of aging population in China and advances in clinical medicine, the amount of operations on old patients increases correspondingly, which imposes increasing challenges to critical care medicine and geriatrics. The study was designed to describe information on the length of ICU stay from a single institution experience of old critically ill gastric cancer patients after surgery and the framework of incorporating data-mining techniques into the prediction. Methods: A retrospective design was adopted to collect the consecutive data about patients aged 60 or over with a gastric cancer diagnosis after surgery in an adult intensive care unit in a medical university hospital in Shenyang, China, from January 2010 to March 2011. Characteristics of patients and the length their ICU stay were gathered for analysis by univariate and multivariate Cox regression to examine the relationship with potential candidate factors. A regression tree was constructed to predict the length of ICU stay and explore the important indicators. Results: Multivariate Cox analysis found that shock and nutrition support need were statistically significant risk factors for prolonged length of ICU stay. Altogether, eight variables entered the regression model, including age, APACHE II score, SOFA score, shock, respiratory system dysfunction, circulation system dysfunction, diabetes and nutrition support need. The regression tree indicated comorbidity of two or more kinds of shock as the most important factor for prolonged length of ICU stay in the studied sample. Conclusions: Comorbidity of two or more kinds of shock is the most important factor of length of ICU stay in the studied sample. Since there are differences of ICU patient characteristics between wards and hospitals, consideration of the data-mining technique should be given by the intensivists as a length of ICU stay prediction tool.

  • This paper introduces a new algorithms for reconstructing the suffix tree of character string, when a substring id deleted from the string or a string is inserted into the string as a substring. The algorithem has two main functions, delete-structure and insert-structure. The main objective of this algorithm is to save the time for constructing the suffix tree of an edited string, when the suffix tree of the original string is available. We tested the performance of this algorithm with some DNA sequences. This test shows that delete-reconstructing can save time when the length of the subsequence deleted is less than 30% of the original sequence, and the insert-reconstructing takes less time with regard to the length of inserted sequence.

  • 'Gamhong' apple cultivar which was bred by National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science, has high sugar contents, large types of fruit and mid-season types of cultivar. However, 'Gamhong' apple tree is very sensitive cultivar to bitter pit. Therefore, many farms have not solved the problems on bitter pit to cultivate 'Gamhong' apple tree. This study was carried out to find out the exposed length of rootstocks on the occurrence of bitter pit and fruit quality of 'Gamhong'/M.26 apple tree and seek the ideal cultivation strategy to decrease bitter pit to cultivate it. For this research, ten-years-old 'Gamhong'/M.26 apple trees were used. The difference among the treatments of the exposure of rootstock of RL (5 cm), RM (15 cm) and RH (20 cm) from the soil surface was observed with 4 repetition from 2010 to 2011. Decreased exposure of rootstocks resulted in more vigorous growth, taller height, and greater number of shoots. N and K/Ca of RH was tend to be lower than RM and RL, whereas as the exposure of rootstock decreased, fruit weight and bitter pit increased. Therefore, occurrence of bitter pit in RH was significantly lower than that of RM and RL treatment and fruit weight also decreased. There was no difference on nutrient contents of leaf and the fruit quality by the exposed of rootstock in 'Gamhong' M.26 apple tree. To reduce the occurrence of bitter pit, it may be helpful to keep the optimum exposure of rootstock within 20 cm from the soil surface.
