  • The monitoring system for link travel speed using taxi probe is one of key sub-systems of ITS. Link travel speed collected by taxi probe has been widely employed for both monitoring the traffic states of urban road network and providing real-time travel time information. When sample size of taxi probe is small and link travel time is longer than a length of time interval to collect travel speed data, and in turn the missing state is inevitable. Under this missing state, link travel speed data is real-timely not collected. This missing state changes from single to multiple time intervals. Existing single interval prediction techniques can not generate multiple future states. For this reason, it is necessary to replace multiple missing states with the estimations generated by multi-interval prediction method. In this study, a multi-interval prediction method to generate the speed estimations of single and multiple future time step is introduced overcoming the shortcomings of short-term techniques. The model is developed based on Non-Parametric Regression (NPR), and outperformed single-interval prediction methods in terms of prediction accuracy in spite of multi-interval prediction scheme.

  • Recently, various public transportation activation policies are being implemented in order to mitigate traffic congestion in metropolitan areas. Especially in the metropolitan area, the bus information system has been introduced to provide information on the current location of the bus and the estimated arrival time. However, it is difficult to predict the travel time due to repetitive traffic congestion in buses passing through complex urban areas due to repetitive traffic congestion and bus bunching. The previous bus travel time study has difficulties in providing information on route travel time of bus users and information on long-term travel time due to short-term travel time prediction based on the data-driven method. In this study, the path based long-term bus travel time prediction methodology is studied. For this purpose, the training data is composed of 2015 bus travel information and the 2016 data are composed of verification data. We analyze bus travel information and factors affecting bus travel time were classified into departure time, day of week, and weather factors. These factors were used into clusters with similar patterns using self organizing map. Based on the derived clusters, the reference table for bus travel time by day and departure time for sunny and rainy days were constructed. The accuracy of bus travel time derived from this study was verified using the verification data. It is expected that the prediction algorithm of this paper could overcome the limitation of the existing intuitive and empirical approach, and it is possible to improve bus user satisfaction and to establish flexible public transportation policy by improving prediction accuracy.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop travel-time estimation model using neural networks and prediction model using neural networks and kalman-filtering technique. The data used in this study are travel speed collected from inductive loop vehicle detection systems(VDS) and travel time collected from the toll collection system (TCS) between Seoul and Osan toll Plaza on the Seoul-Pusan Expressway. Two models, one for travel-time estimation and the other for travel-time Prediction were developed. Application cases of each model were divided into two cases, so-called, a single-region and a multiple-region. because of the different characteristics of travel behavior shown on each region. For the evaluation of the travel time estimation and Prediction models, two Parameters. i.e. mode and mean were compared using five-minute interval data sets. The test results show that mode was superior to mean in representing the relationship between speed and travel time. It is, however shown that mean value gives better results in case of insufficient data. It should be noted that the estimation and the Prediction of travel times based on the VDS data have been improved by using neural networks, because the waiting time at exit toll gates can be included for the estimation of travel time based on the VDS data by considering differences between VDS and TCS travel time Patterns in the models. In conclusion, the results show that the developed models decrease estimation and prediction errors. As a result of comparing the developed model with the existing model using the observed data, the equality coefficients of the developed model was average 88% and the existing model was average 68%. Thus, the developed model was improved minimum 17% and maximum 23% rather then existing model .

  • Travel-time is considered the most typical and preferred traffic information for intelligent transportation systems(ITS). This paper proposes a real-time travel-time prediction method for a national highway. In this paper, the K-nearest neighbor(KNN) method is used for travel time prediction. The KNN method (a nonparametric method) is appropriate for a real-time traffic management system because the method needs no additional assumptions or parameter calibration. The performances of various models are compared based on mean absolute percentage error(MAPE) and coefficient of variation(CV). In real application, the analysis of real traffic data collected from Korean national highways indicates that the proposed model outperforms other prediction models such as the historical average model and the Kalman filter model. It is expected to improve travel-time reliability by flexibly using travel-time from the proposed model with travel-time from the interval detectors.

  • Travel time prediction is an indispensable to many advanced traveler information systems(ATIS) and intelligent transportation systems(ITS). In this paper we propose a method to predict travel time using $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayesian classification method which has exhibited high accuracy and processing speed when applied to classily large amounts of data. Our proposed prediction algorithm is also scalable to road networks with arbitrary travel routes. For a given route, we consider time-varying average segment velocity to perform more accuracy of travel time prediction. We compare the proposed method with the existing prediction algorithms like link-based prediction algorithm [1] and Micro T* algorithm [2]. It is shown from the performance comparison that the proposed predictor can reduce MARE (mean absolute relative error) significantly, compared with the existing predictors.

  • The study of Estimation model for the short-term travel time prediction. There is a different solution which has predicted the link travel time to solve this problem. By using this solution, the link travel time is predicted based on link conditions from time to time. The predicated link travel time is used to search the shortest path. Before providing a dynamic shortest path finding, the prediction model should be verified. To verify the prediction model, three models such as Kalman filtering, Stochastic Process, ARIMA. The ARIMA model should adjust optimal parameters according to the traffic conditions. It requires a frequent adjustment process of finding optimal parameters. As a result of these characteristics, It is difficult to use the ARIMA model as a prediction. Kalman Filtering model has a distinguished prediction capability. It is due to the modification of travel time predictive errors in the gaining matrix. As a result of these characteristics, the Kalman Filtering model is likely to have a non-accumulative errors in prediction. Stochastic Process model uses the historical patterns of travel time conditions on links. It if favorably comparable with the other models in the sense of the recurrent travel time condition prediction. As a result, for the travel time estimation, Kalman filtering model is the better estimation model for the short-term estimation, stochastic process is the better for the long-term estimation.

  • This paper develops a travel time prediction algorithm that can be used for real-time application. The algorithm searches for the most similar pattern in historical travel time database as soon as a series of real-time data become available. Artificial neural network approach is then taken to forecast travel time in the near future. To examine the performance of this algorithm, travel time data from Gyungbu Highway were obtained and the algorithm is applied. The evaluation shows that the algorithm could predict travel time within 4% error range if comparable patterns are available in the historical travel time database. This paper documents the detailed algorithm and validation procedure, thereby furnishing a key to generating future travel time information.

  • Traditionally, a dynamic network model is considered as a tool for solving real-time traffic problems. One of useful and practical ways of using such models is to use it to produce and disseminate forecast travel time information so that the travelers can switch their routes from congested to less-congested or uncongested, which can enhance the performance of the network. This approach seems to be promising when the traffic congestion is severe, especially when sudden incidents happen. A consideration that should be given in implementing this method is that travel time information may affect the future traffic condition itself, creating undesirable side effects such as the over-reaction problem. Furthermore incorrect forecast travel time can make the information unreliable. In this paper, a network-wide travel time prediction model under incidents is developed. The model assumes that all drivers have access to detailed traffic information through personalized in-vehicle devices such as car navigation systems. Drivers are assumed to make their own travel choice based on the travel time information provided. A route-based stochastic variational inequality is formulated, which is used as a basic model for the travel time prediction. A diversion function is introduced to account for the motorists' willingness to divert. An inverse function of the diversion curve is derived to develop a variational inequality formulation for the travel time prediction model. Computational results illustrate the characteristics of the proposed model.

  • PURPOSES : The travel times of expressway buses have been estimated using the travel time data between entrance tollgates and exit tollgates, which are produced by the Toll Collections System (TCS). However, the travel time data from TCS has a few critical problems. For example, the travel time data include the travel times of trucks as well as those of buses. Therefore, the travel time estimation of expressway buses using TCS data may be implicitly and explicitly incorrect. The goal of this study is to improve the accuracy of the expressway bus travel time estimation using DSRC-based travel time by identifying the appropriate analysis period of input data. METHODS : All expressway buses are equipped with the Hi-Pass transponders so that the travel times of only expressway buses can be extracted now using DSRC. Thus, this study analyzed the operational characteristics as well as travel time patterns of the expressway buses operating between Seoul and Dajeon. And then, this study determined the most appropriate analysis period of input data for the expressway bus travel time estimation model in order to improve the accuracy of the model. RESULTS : As a result of feasibility analysis according to the analysis period, overall MAPE values were found to be similar. However, the MAPE values of the cases using similar volume patterns outperformed other cases. CONCLUSIONS : The best input period was that of the case which uses the travel time pattern of the days whose total expressway traffic volumes are similar to that of one day before the day during which the travel times of expressway buses must be estimated.

  • Prediction of travel time on road network is one of crucial research issue in dynamic route guidance system. A new approach based on Rule-Based classification is proposed for predicting travel time. This approach departs from many existing prediction models in that it explicitly consider traffic patterns during day time as well as week day. We can predict travel time accurately by considering both traffic condition of time range in a day and traffic patterns of vehicles in a week. We compare the proposed method with the existing prediction models like Link-based, Micro-T* and Switching model. It is also revealed that proposed method can reduce MARE (mean absolute relative error) significantly, compared with the existing predictors.
