We investigated the control of Bemisia tabaci adults in tomato greenhouses using the eggplant as a trap plant with 4 systemic chemicals. The control effect of dinotefuran SG 50% on tobacco whitefly adults was 80% mortality, the highest than that cyantraniliprole, pyridaben and clothianidin, 51.0%, 12.4% and 11.0% respectively when all chemicals with recommended doses were used. Dinotefuran was applied at various doses and was observed to be most effective above 200ppm (88.4%)t. The control effect of dinotefuran lasted for appromimately nine 9 days and the density of tobacco whitefly adults increased there after. In field tests, the densities of tobacco whitefly adults on tomato shoots were highest at points 0, 15 and 20 m from the eggplant traps and lowest at 5 and 10 m. When the density of tobacco whitefly was low and the eggplants with dinotefuran SG 50% were placed in the tomato greenhouse at 10 m intervals, the overall density of tobacco whitefly adults was lower. In addition, densities were higher at the side of the greenhouse than in the interior and further away from the eggplant. When the density of tobacco whitefly was high and the eggplants with dinotefuran were placed at 5 m intervals, the density of tobacco whitefly at each 5 m point decreased. Theses results confirm that the eggplant is an effective trap plant for attracting tobacco whitefly audlts and combined with dinotefuran SG 50% decreases the density of tobacco whitefly in tomato greenhouses.

The striped fruit fly, Bactrocera scutellata, infests pumpkin flowers. Males are attracted to raspberry ketone (RK) and feed the attractant. This study was conducted to determine essential techniques to develop a male annihilation technique (MAT) of this insect pest. Effective attractants were screened in laboratory and field conditions. Both males and females were responsive to methyl eugenol (ME) in laboratory, though no flies were attracted to ME traps in field conditions. In contrast, cuelure (CL), which is a chemical derivative of RK, was effective to attract males of B. scutellata in both laboratory and field conditions. However, RK was equivalent or superior to CL when they were formulated in a form of wax dispenser. A pyrethroid insecticide along with the attractant was effective to attract and kill B. scutellata. Funnel trap was useful for MAT to confirm and count dead flies. These results indicate that MAT against B. scutellata consists of RK and bifenthrin in a wax type formulation, which is installed to a funnel type of trap. These essential factors would be useful to develop MAT applicable to control B. scutellata in fields.
The occurrence of major pest infestation was compared between conventional tea plantation and organic tea plantation at Sulloc tea garden in Dosun-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do from 2002 to 2009. Tetranychus kanzawai was observed a lot in the second year, but it waned from late June. There was not much difference between conventional farming and organic farming in terms of pest density. Empoasca onukii was infested in the second year of organic farming compared with conventional farming, which highlighted the fact that second year of organic farming requires a special care. Scirotothrips dorsalis was highly dense in the second and third year of conventional farming, but its occurrence was lowered when the farming technique was shifted to organic farming. The number of Homona magnanima peaked 4 times each year. In 2008, the first year of organic farming, saw high occurrence of 771.2 per trap per year. In 2009, the second year, the population per trap dropped to 80, showing a great variance depending on year. The occurrence of Caloptilia theivora peaked 5 times annually. In 2008, the first year of organic farming, an average of 2,779 pests per trap was found, and in the following year, 4,143 pests were observed. It showed that density rose in organic growing period.

The effectiveness of plant-based attractants was studied using large traps, which attracted relatively more snails in agricultural water drainage ditches and rice-cultivating environments, although their effectiveness in rice fields and lakes was limited. The rate began to rise after three hours of observation. Watermelon peel exhibited the highest apple snail attraction rate (13.8%), followed by potatoes (10.0%), and apple peel (8.8%). These values significantly differed from the attraction rate attributed to papaya leaves (F=3.84; P=0.0387). After 24 h, watermelon peel and apple peel indicated a higher rate of attraction (23.4% and 21.7%, respectively), which were significantly different compared with those of papaya leaves and potatoes (F=9.94; P=0.00455). Large bait traps outperformed funnel traps in capturing golden apple snails and trapped a significant number of snails measuring over 1 cm in size. Watermelon peel was the most effective attractant for a large bait trap, followed by apple peel, potatoes, and papaya leaves. On average, 110 snails were captured in the lure net. However, potatoes, apple peels, and papaya leaves caught an average of 93, 80, and 79 snails, respectively. Among the attractants, the lure effect of the snails was not significantly different. The efficiency of large bait traps in capturing snails, regardless of the plant attractant employed, followed the order: apple peel > watermelon peel and potatoes > papaya leaves > melon > Korean melon. Watermelon peel is highly recommended for farmer use, as well as apple peel and potatoes. Utilizing these snail attractants may contribute positively to developing a safe and environment-friendly integrated pest management strategy.
BACKGROUND: An intensive farming system may be of the most important source for agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution, which is a major concern for agricultural water management in South Korea. Various management practices have therefore been applied to reduce NPS loads from upland fields. This study presents performances of sediment trap for reducing NPS and soil loss from rainfall runoff in cropland. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 2018 and 2019, three sediment traps (L1.5 m × W1.0 m × D0.5 m = 0.75 ㎥) and their controls were established in the end of sloped (ca. 3%) upland field planted with maize crops. Over the seasons, runoff water was monitored, collected, and analyzed at every runoff. Soils deposited in sediment traps were collected and weighed at the season end. Sediment traps reduced runoff amount (p<0.05) and NPS concentrations, though the decreased NPS concentrations were not always statistically significant. In addition, sediment traps had a significant prevention effect on soil loss from rainfall runoff in a sloped cropland. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the sediment trap could be a powerful and the best management practice to reduce NPS pollution and soil loss in a sloped upland field.

The striped fruit fly, Zeugodacus scutellata (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one of important pests in Cucurbitaceae plants. The cuelure is currently using with various forms for surveillance to the Z. scutellata male as well as Z. cucurbitae, Z. tau, and Bactrocera tryoni, which are categorized as prohibited-quarantine fruit flies in Korea. This study was conducted to verify the attraction effect of applying the cuelure in different forms in field conditions. In this study, we used cuelure by 3 different forms as solid, liquid, and wax to striped fruit flies using the Steiner trap. The trap was placed in two Jeju and one Gyeongbuk regions and the number of attracted flies by each cuelure form is monitored by every 2 weeks during 2021. Attraction effect on Z. scutellata was significant difference by different cuelure forms in two Jeju regions. Liquid and wax forms of cuelure showed high attraction number to the Z. scutellata male compared with solid form when flies were occurred with high population from July to August in Jeju. However, there was no significant difference on attraction effect at low population in Juju and Gyeongbuk by different forms. Based on field assay, liquid and wax form of cuelure are recommended for surveillance against Z. scutellata male. Furthermore, these results also strongly suggest that the attractant, liquid and wax forms of cuelure, could be effective for surveillance to quarantine fruit flies such as Z. cucurbitae, Z. tau, and B. tryoni in Korea.
Striped flea beetle, Phyllotreta striolata (SFB) and turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae ruficornis (TSF) are two economically important sporadic pests in radish fields on Jeju island. The response of adult SFB and TSF to a mixture of aggregation pheromone, (+)-(6R,7S)-himachala-9,11-diene and host plant volatile, allyl isothiocyanate (HAI), as well as to yellow and blue sticky traps was examined in radish fields. Adult SFB was more attracted to the sticky trap with HAI, regardless of the color of the sticky trap; however, adult TSF was more attracted on the yellow sticky trap than blue, and no effect of HAI was observed. The adult SFB and TSF can be effectively monitored using yellow sticky traps placed 10 cm above the plant canopy. SFB and TSF had 3 and 5 peak times in a year, respectively. The first peak occurred in the middle of March for SFB and mid-late of April for TSF. We expect that the results of the present study can facilitate minimizing the damage caused by the two important pests in commercial radish fields.
This study was conducted to predict the hatching time of eggs of Lycorma delicatula, to select an effective environmentally-friendly agriculture material (EFAM) and to evaluate the attraction effect of brown sticky traps for controling of Lycorma delicatula nymph and adults. Eggs hatched 55.9, 26.8, 21.6 days after incubation at 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$ with 14L:10D condition and the hatching rates of egg were 61.9, 57.8, 30.4%, respectively. At high temperature conditions, egg development periods were shorter and the hatching rate was lower. The relationship between temperature and developmental rate was expressed by the linear equation Y=0.0028X-0.0228, $R^2$=0.9561. The low temperature threshold of eggs was $8.14^{\circ}C$ and the thermal constant required to reach larva was 355.4 DD. According to this relationship, the mean estimated hatching date was $22^{nd}$ May. The effective EFAM was natural plant extract, sophora extract, derris extract to nymph and natural plant extract, pyrethrum extract, sophora extract to adult. Among three colors of sticky trap : brown, blue and yellow, the brown sticky trap was the most attractive to nymphs and adults of L. delicatula over a 2 weeks trial period. It suggested that the brown sticky trap could be a very useful and environment-friendly control method for nymphs and adults of L. delicatula.
This experiment was conducted to investigate host preference, occurrence and intraplant distribution of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) and Encarsia formosa (Gahan) in greenhouse. T vaporariorum preferred cucumber over tomamto. 7: vaporariorum adults distributed at upper part of cucumber plant. Nymphs also distributed at upper part in early growing stage of cucumber but became to distribute lower part after 40 days. E. formosa adults were found mainly at mid-upper part of plant but there was no significant difference in statistics all analysis among each parts and also mummy distributed mid-low part. E. formosa were released when five ir: vaporariorum were caught by yellow sticky trap per week in glasshouse. The treatment of one tag (50 mummies) of E. formosa per five plants controlled successfully the 7: vaporariorum population after 40 days.
The relationships between aphids, plants, other organisms and some physical components of the environment are reviewed. Aspects considered include year cycles, polymorphism fecundity, relationship of different groups of aphids with particular groups of plants, honeydew, alarm pheromones, aposematic colouring, camouflage, colour variation within species, morphological variation within species, multivariate analysis and problems of its interpretation, parasitism, stridulating mechanisms, predators, coevolution of plants and aphids, plant galls, trapping aphids and the interpretation of trap catches, an curation of aphid collections. References are given to sources of information about aphids, with special reference to the Korean fauna.
